Description

Amandil (Quenya for Aman-friend) was a lord in Númenor. Like his forebears, he belonged to the Faithful, the Númenóreans who continued to honor the Valar in defiance of the King's Men. After the Downfall of Númenor, his son Elendil would found the Númenórean Realms in Exile.

In his youth, Amandil was a close friend of Ar-Pharazôn, who later kept him on his royal council despite Amandil's reputation as an Elf-friend. Amandil won early renown as a skilled and daring sea-captain and was widely respected for the ancient nobility of his house.

Everything changed after Ar-Pharazôn captured Sauron and brought him to Númenor, for the supposed prisoner soon gained control over the King. As Sauron's influence grew, all of the King's counselors except Amandil fell into flattery and allegiance, and the King was persuaded to begin the worship of Melkor. Amandil was dismissed from the council and withdrew, secretly gathering the Faithful.

When Amandil discovered that the King intended to wage war upon Aman, he was struck with dread. He summoned Elendil and disclosed his plan to sail west in search of aid from Manwë. Working in secret to avoid bringing ruin upon his house, he instructed Elendil to ready ships in the haven of Rómenna for the moment of escape. Upon leaving, Amandil feigned an eastward voyage before turning west into forbidden waters. Accompanied by three trusted servants, he departed. Neither he nor his companions were ever heard from again.
