Follow up on Tooltip Item improvement

Now when Template:Item Tooltip adds items with factional requirements to "Category:X Items" where X is the name of the reputation page this will be a follow up question, not really a suggestion.

Each faction has a few items that yield better reputation, these are either crafted, obtained from quests, or looted. The number is usually very small compared to what each faction usually barters or sells to members of different standings. A common denominator seems to be 3 but there are differences.

Are we interested in differentiating the reputation-yielding items from bartered/sold items? If so we could make this template add items to "Category:X Rep Items" and that category is a sub under "Category:X Items" as these items are a specialization of items that relate to the faction.

If not interested, just drop this notice and carry on with your third breakfast. Personally I think we can live without these small categories since the items are already mentioned at each faction/reputation page anyway, usually under the "Gaining Reputation" section; hence I am quite uninterested. Different parameter to modify default description?

In barter tables, I've started to use {{Item:Mark|mode=imlink_plain|arg=35 Marks}}, but for reputation items, it doesn't work (item name is displayed instead), I guess it's because there is no "arg" parameter, and I couldn't figure how to make it work, but I've found that I can instead use "rename" parameter (ex.: {{Item:Dourhand Crest|mode=imlink_plain|rename=35 Dourhand Crests}}), is there a way to use the same parameter in both cases?

Maybe introduce the use of a parameter "plural" that would be in the "Item" or "Reputation Item" page, and use a parameter "qty" with mode imlink_plain? Ex.: {{Item:Mark|mode=imlink_plain|qty=35}} Goingbald (talk) 10:59, 7 January 2012

The arg parameter has been deprecated a long time ago. Please use the "rename" parameter instead.
There have been plans of introducing a plural parameter, but this would be introduced in the item page and automatically used :)
EDIT: I just saw that the rename parameter is not yet in use by most of the item pages. You can introduce that parameter if really needed on pages by changing the item page from
<onlyinclude>{{Reputation Item
| mode         = {{{mode|}}}
| rename       = {{{rename|}}}
...
to
<onlyinclude>{{Reputation Item
| mode         = {{{mode|}}}
| rename       = {{{rename|{{{arg|}}}}}}
...
But please try to add this only on pages which really need that feature. EoD (talk) ‎02:41, 9 January 2012

Barter-able Reputation Items

Barrow-treasures serve as barter items, as well as reputation increases. The text reads 'Use this item to immediately gain reputation in this faction or turned in for items.'

It could use another parameter, though I'm not sure what the best name would be. Elinnea (talk) 16:58, 19 December 2011

Crafted Guild items

The description following the points granted differs with guild items:

  • large items have same description
  • medium items --> "Use this item to immediately gain reputation in this faction or turn in a stack for a 7-day reputation item."
  • small items --> "Use this item to immediately gain reputation in this faction or turn in a stack for a 3-day reputation item."

How to handle? --Goingbald (talk) 02:40, 15 December 2011 (EST)

I hate turbine for doing that ;). I can add a "rep-stack" parameter, where you can enter the number of days. Or I can enter a "guild-size" parameter where you can enter "medium, large, small". Apart from that, I have no ideas. Any suggestions? EoD (talk) 20:42, 16 December 2011
From a user standpoint, I would find a "guild-size" type of parameter the most intuitive to use. The way I imagine it: If it's blank or Large, the default text is shown. If the parameter says Medium or Small, the relevant text overrides. Elinnea (talk) 20:56, 16 December 2011
Item:Medium Westfold Symbol - I guess that's how it should look like? EoD (talk) 10:42, 17 December 2011
If guild rep items are the only rep items that actually bind on acquire, I could use the "guild-size" parameter to trigger a "BoA". So we get rid of one parameter. Any ideas/objections? EoD (talk) 10:54, 17 December 2011
Unfortunately, Gift Mathoms also bind on acquire, so the parameter can't be removed entirely. There may be others as well. Elinnea (talk) 11:46, 17 December 2011

Faction link

Having the link to the faction in the tooltip is nice, but it does change the colour where it should be green along with the rest of the line. Is there a way to override that colour change? Elinnea (talk) ‎11:41, 15 December 2011

I would try something like Faction: Men of Bree
{{Color|LimeGreen|Faction: [[Men of Bree|{{Color|LimeGreen|Men of Bree}}]]}}
RingTailCat (talk) ‎11:47, 15 December 2011
No, please don't do that. If you want a properly coloured link, just tell me. You should enter only the name of the faction, no link, no colours, etc.
EDIT: Goingbald already added a properly coloured faction link :) EoD (talk) 20:40, 16 December 2011
Goingbald already added it to the template, so there's no need to type anything other than the faction name. Elinnea (talk) 20:48, 16 December 2011

Questions about Template: Reputation Item

(Moved from User talk:Lotroadmin - 2 July 2014)

In trying to "bend" Template: Reputation Item for use with Dol Amroth (U 14) I am finding some stuff that doesn't make any sense to me. It is going to require folks with a longer history at the Wiki than me to answer. Goingbald????

  1. It appears that the template was written specifically for Mines of Moria.
    GB: The template is meant for all reputation items
  2. The parameter "guild size" makes no sense
    GB: This parameter is meant only for crafting guilds' items, where the small & medium items have an additional text telling that it can bartered for the bigger item (7 small >> 1 medium or 5 medium >> 1 large)
    Is it possible for a bot to examine any Reputation Item usages and find out if it is used anywhere?
    GB: The "What links here" link in tools on the side can tell, they are all using it as far as I know
  3. "guild size" creates a comment in Flavor: "You must be in the {{{faction}}} to use this item."
    GB: This parameter is meant only for crafting guilds' items, so that's another text part that goes with these
    AND: if small: or turn in a stack for a 3-day reputation item
    OR: if medium: or turn in a stack for a 7-day reputation item
    Personally, I can't say I ever encountered a "3-day" or "7-day" reputation item.
  4. Finally there are the added lines indicating they can be swapped for other rep items (but only for Iron Garrison) -- are the REALLY the only items where that comes up on the in-game tool-tip?
    GB: Moria reputation items are the only ones so far that can all be swapped between factions ('Iron Garrison Guards' << >> 'Iron Garrison Miners'), so that's another special case with an additional text added
  5. For Dol Amroth tokens the tag line becomes "or turn in for items."

Anybody have any answers? - Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 23:09, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

I've inserted comments prefixed GB in previous points, what would be the new requirement? With which item? -- Goingbald (talk) 01:39, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
Thank you very much! -- I've modified the Template: Reputation Item/doc file to reflect your comments. Hopefully clearing/explaining some of the ambiguity I encountered.
I got involved in this creating the new Dol Amroth Reputation items, and have looked at the Items I have in the vaults of various toons.
The outlier appears to be the Dourhand Crest item -- other Thorin's Hall rep items do not appear to have the additional text.
At this time, I don't know what other old items may have similar issues. As best I can tell, with the exception of the Dourhand item, the earlier areas all use in-game gold to trade for items gated behind Faction reputation. In particular, I haven't looked at Stangard or Limlight Gorge -- but I don't recall them having "rep items" as such.

Update 28.3: New quest requirement

With the changes to some (all?) reputation items in Update 28.3, these items now have a quest requirement.

For example, Lossoth_Spear-head now displays (in red if you haven't done the quest or white if you have done the quest): You must have completed quest 'Staying Agile'.

I tried adding this text to the flavor parameter but it wants to put a beginning double quote before it so doesn't exactly work. Looks like we need a new parameter unless there is some other way to get this quest requirement added. Sagarmatha (talk) 04:44, 28 January 2021 (UTC)

Mathoms

Since the Yondershire, Mathoms have an additional last "flavor" line called: This item may be exchanged for Copper Bounder's Coins by visiting a Yonder-watch Quartermaster. It only applies to Mathoms, and not to the other 2 reputation items from The Mathom Society. If that was the case I could expand the parameter like it was done for the Iron Garrison Guards/Miners... how can we update this template so it adds this (and maybe future) additions? - Tiberivs (talk) 17:20, 5 September 2023 (UTC)
