The Long Peace was a calm period of almost 200 years between battles in Beleriand. After an initial defeat during the Siege of Angband, Morgoth's forces went quiet and no longer struck out at the guarded passes in the mountain range of Thangorodrim.
During this period, the Elves of Beleriand prospered, and the Men of Middle-earth formed friendships with them.
The Long Peace ended suddenly with the Battle of Sudden Flame, which broke the Siege of Angband and scattered the Noldor forces arrayed against Morgoth.
