Eryn Galen (The Greenwood, or Greenwood the Great), was the first name for Mirkwood. It was here that Thranduil's father King Oropher founded the Woodland Realm.
Eryn Galen slowly became known as Mirkwood over several centuries due to the spreading shadow from Dol Guldur.
When that darkness was later conquered, the Elves renamed the forest again, this time to Eryn Lasgalen - Greenleaf Forest, or Wood of the Greenleaves.
