Saber-tooth Cat
Saber-tooth cats are carnivores found in many of the mountainous or snowbound lands of Middle-earth. Their most obvious features are the fang-like teeth projecting below their jaws, and they come in many colours and patterns. They are not actually cats, being a related family. However in common usage some cats such as leopards and lions are considered to be saber-tooth cats.
Saber-tooth cats are very aggressive. They are often pets to ancient bipeds such as giants and snow-beasts, and they do not seem to be aligned with the rising evil unless they are allied to something that is. For example, many Easterlings have trained the local saber-tooth cats of Rhûn into Battle-cats used in war. Battle-cats whose masters were slain in the War of the Ring are sometimes left behind in the Westlands where they become feral and dangerous predators introduced to a foreign environment.
Background
Saber-tooth cats are an actual prehistoric species. They do not appear in the work of J.R.R. Tolkien but were added to The Lord of the Rings Online to give a fantasy flavor to the local wildlife.
