Hendrevail (plural of Hendroval) are large, keen-eyed hawks scattered across Middle-earth, often seen soaring high above forests, plains, and mountains. Their Sindarin name, meaning "Winged Eye," reflects the remarkable vision and awareness these birds possess, allowing them to survey wide areas from the sky with astonishing clarity.

Hendrevail are natural predators, hunting small mammals, birds, and carrion with precision and efficiency. While most are ordinary animals defending their territory or seeking food, some have been observed acting with unusual intelligence, suggesting a subtle understanding of their surroundings. During the War of the Ring, rumors circulated that the Dark Lord Sauron employed certain hendrovail as scouts and messengers, their flights silently relaying information to those who serve shadowed purposes. Travelers in these regions must remain vigilant, for a seemingly ordinary hawk overhead may not be entirely neutral.

Hendrevail are generally solitary hunters, though pairs or small family groups are sometimes encountered near rich feeding grounds. Their speed, sharp talons, and keen eyesight make them highly effective both in hunting and in detecting intruders. While mostly natural creatures, their presence in zones of conflict has lent them a reputation for vigilance, cunning, and an almost uncanny awareness of events below.
