Crebain

Crebain (singular craban) are pestering, black-feathered birds native to the lands between the Misty Mountains and the dark eaves of Fangorn. Crow-like in shape but notably larger and more intelligent, they are infamous not for their strength, but for their vigilance. A lone craban circling overhead is often enough to betray travelers below, its sharp eyes and piercing cries carrying warnings far and fast.
Though craban are natural creatures, they are frequently found acting in the service of darker powers. Flocks have been observed moving with uncanny purpose, darkening the sky as they patrol roads, passes, and wild borders. Whether through training, corruption, or simple instinct, they serve as watchers and messengers, alerting hostile forces to movement on the ground. Those who wish to remain unseen must either take great care to hide or silence these birds swiftly, lest their presence be revealed.
Craban are most commonly encountered in the high passes and foothills surrounding the Misty Mountains, as well as the forested lands nearby. While physically fragile, they are dangerous in a subtler way, for few creatures in Middle-earth are as effective at spreading alarm. In darker tales and campfire humor alike, it is said that enough fallen crebain can be made into a serviceable pie, though most agree the risk of discovery far outweighs the reward.
