Background

The promise of adventure and a penchant for wandering has brought you to Mossward, a small settlement on the border of Swanfleet and Old Cardolan. What now awaits you?

Objective 1

Move forward by pressing W, and right-click on Bevan to talk to him

The guard at the gate of Mossward greets you with a friendly smile, beckoning for you to approach.

Bevan says,"Welcome to Mossward, traveller."
Bevan: 'I can see from the road dust on your clothes that you have travelled a great distance to be here, and so long as you cause no trouble for my folk, you are welcome to stay. It takes a hardy sort to make a living here on the edge of the wild, and the folk of Mossward will gladly put you to work, if you're willin'.
'I think you'll find the people here to be friendly and welcoming, if you treat them kindly.'
Bevan says,"I see Geralt is out and about. Why not introduce yourself to him?"

Objective 2

  • Talk to Geralt by the fountain in the town square

Bevan at the gate recommended that you introduce yourself to Geralt, one of the residents of Mossward.

Move forward by pressing W, turn to the left and right with A and D, and move backward by pressing S.

Geralt: 'I hope you don't mind me staring! We don't see many adventurers in these parts. The nearest we usually get is that Meneldir. Says he's a Ranger, but it seems to me that's just an excuse for having dirt on his clothes and disappearing into the wild at all hours...
'But anyway, Mossward is a quiet village. Always has been! Cause no trouble and you can stay as you like. But first things first: you should pay a visit to our blacksmith, Skardí Bendblade. He'll clean and fix up your gear for you. His shop is just up those steps. Look for the sign with the anvil on it.

Objective 3

  • Enter the Mossward blacksmith shop to the south-east of the fountain.

Enter the Blacksmith Shop by right-clicking on the door to open it, and then press W to walk inside.

Skardi Bendblade is inside the Mossward blacksmith shop to the south-east of the fountain.

Objective 4

  • Talk to Skardi Bendblade inside the Mossward blacksmith shop

Skardí Bendblade is very interested to see an adventurer like you in the peaceful village of Mossward.

Skardi Bendblade says,"Oh, who's this?"
Skardi Bendblade says,"We don't see many adventurers in Mossward."
Skardi Bendblade says,"I suppose Meneldir counts."
Meneldir says,"I am no adventurer, Skardi."
Skardi Bendblade says,"Well, what are you, then?"
Meneldir says,"I was a Ranger. It is quite different."
Skardi Bendblade: 'You're an adventurer, I can tell! What brings you to Mossward?'
Before you can answer, the dwarf goes right on talking.
'This is a quiet village, and the folk here like it that way. I assume Bevan warned you not to disturb the peace? Of course he did. He says that to me near every fortnight, as if I might summon a troop of rowdy dwarves from my homeland at any moment! Bwahahaha! If only I could! 'What did you say your name was?'
Skardi Bendblade says,"Bah!"
Skardi Bendblade says,"You won't find a better smithy for miles around, friend."
Skardi Bendblade says,"Put your gear on the counter, and I'll fix it up for you."

Objective 5

Holding down the right mouse button allows you to spin your camera and keep people of interest in view.

Objective 6

  • Set your gear down on the counter

Skardí Bendblade has asked you to set your gear down on the counter, and he will fix it up for free... this time.

Right-click on the sparkling location to set your gear down on the counter.

Skardí Bendblade says,"Very good. Won't cost you anything, friend. Not this time, anyway. Here you go. Its important to have a fine weapon."

Objective 7

  • Wait for Skardí Bendblade to repair your equipment and set it on the counter.

Wait for Skardi Bendblade to set your equipment on the counter, and then take it.

Objective 8

  • Take your gear from the counter and talk to Skardí Bendblade

Skardí Bendblade has repaired your gear and invited you to pick it up from the counter. He eagerly waits for your feedback on the work he has done.

Right-click on the sparkling satchel to open it and see its contents. Right-clicking on items inside a satchel will pick them up and put them into your inventory. You can press 'I' to see the contents of your Inventory

Skardi Bendblade: 'Just carrying around a bunch of equipment won't help you much in battle, as I'm sure you know. You want to be sure to equip your weapons before you get into a fight!'

Objective 9

  • Equip your weapons and talk to Meneldir inside the blacksmith shop

The man standing inside the Mossward blacksmith shop, Meneldir, has called you to speak to him.

When you acquire new weapons and armour, you can press 'I' to see them in your Inventory. From there, you can equip them by right-clicking their icons, or by dragging them onto your Character Panel, which you can access by pressing 'C'

'The man leaning against the wall of the shop calls for your attention.
Meneldir: 'My friend Skardí speaks the truth: you do not want to stride into battle without your weapons equipped, for they will do you little good at the bottom of your bags. He is right on this point, as well: Mossward is a quiet village, and few adventurers come this way, let alone one who carries (herself/himself) as you do. What road has brought you to Mossward on the border of Swanfleet, my friend?'

Hobbit version

'You share some of the features of the folk who live in the Stoor-vales, nearby, but I deem you come not from their villages.'

You consider what should be said of your past to this curious stranger.

Beorning version

'Would you speak of a childhood spent learning the ways of your ancestor Beorn, from whom you and your siblings inherited the skin-chaning ability with which you become ferocious bears in a time of need? Or would you speak of the dangers that even now encroach upon the Vales of Anduin, threatening your family and those folk who live nearby?'

Dwarf version

'Would you speak of your desire to leave the mountains of your own people in search of distant wonders and unfound treasure, or of the dangers that even now encroach upon the lands of all free folk, compelling you to fight on behalf of those who cannot?'

Elf version

'Would you speak of your desire to see as much of the beauty of distant lands and wonders as you can, or of the dangers that even now encroach upon the lands of all free folk, compelling you to fight on behalf of those who cannot?'

High-elf version

'Would you speak of the light of Valinor, long-remembered and much-missed, or of the friends you lost in the Battle of Dagorlad, before the gates of Mordor in the Second Age? Should you speak of the injury you sustained in that battle, and of your long period of recovery in the house of Elrond?'

Hobbit version

'Would you speak of your most un-hobbitlike desire to see distant lands and wonders beyond the borders of the shire, or of the dangers that even now encroach upon the lands of all free folk, compelling you to fight on behalf of those who cannot?'

Man version

'Would you speak of an upbringing that gave you a desire to see distant wonders, or of the dangers that even now encroach upon the lands of all free folk, compelling you to fight on behalf of those who cannot?'

Stout-axe version

'Would you speak of your long captivity in the land of Mordor, where your folk the Stout-axes toiled beneath the watchful eye of Sauron and his cruel servants? Should you speak of your escape from the Black Land and your desperate journey to lands free of Sauron's evil?'
Before you can choose the right words, Meneldir raises his palm.

Objective 10

  • Listen to what Meneldir has to say.

Listen to Meneldir and Skardí discuss events

Meneldir says,"I do not mean to pry. Your past is your own."
Meneldir says,"My chieftain Strider always said-"
Meneldir says,"What is that?"
Skardi Bendblade says,"The town bells! Something is amiss outside!"
Meneldir says,"Follow me! Hurry!"

Objective 11

  • Follow Meneldir outside to learn what trouble has come to Mossward.

The ringing of the town bells signals that danger has come to Mossward!

Meneldir has hurried outside the Blacksmith shop, and you should follow him.

Mossward Resident says,"The town is afire! We are under attack!"

Objective 12

  • Talk to Meneldir in the Mossward town square.
Meneldir: 'Under attack? By whom?
'This smells like Orcs to me, <name>, but I cannot understand it. Orcs have not troubled these lands for many years!
'Come with me, and stay close. We will get to the bottom of this, and save the town if we must!'

Objective 13

  • Follow Meneldir.
Meneldir says,"Follow me."
Meneldir says,"Look there! We've found the villain!"

Objective 14

  • Defeat the Goblin Raider

You have found one of the villains responsible for attacking the town of Mossward. What has brought goblins like this one to Swanfleet?

Meneldir says,"Show him no mercy, <name>."
Meneldir says,"That's the way!"
Meneldir says,"Well done, my friend."
Meneldir says,"This goblin could not have set so many fires alone."

Objective 15

  • Stand alongside Meneldir and remain alert.

You have defeated the goblin, but he could not have set all these fires by himself. He surely has allies nearby.

Eleri says,"There is trouble to the east, Meneldir. I need fighters!"
Meneldir says,"My new friend here is capable, and will provide the help you need."
Eleri says,"But what will you do, Meneldir?"

Objective 16

Eleri has called for everyone in Mossward to help protect the town from the ravages of the goblin raiding party.

Eleri: I'm glad for any help you can give me. Stay close!'

Objective 17

  • Follow Eleri and help her protect the town
Meneldir says, "Farewell, for now!"
Eleri says, "Rangers."
Eleri says, "Follow me, my new friend. There will be fighting!"
Mossward Resident says, "The bells have stopped. Are we safe?"
Eleri says, "I would not count on it."
Eleri says, "What did I tell you?"
Skardí Bendblade says, "Eleri! I see you met our new visitor!"
Skardí Bendblade says, "I like this one much more than these others!"
Eleri says, "Me too, Skardí. Come with us!"

Objective 18

  • Prepare yourself to defend the villagers from Madthrug, leader of the raiding party

You have found the apparent leader of the raiding party, and he is no goblin... he is one of the fighting Uruk-hai! Madthrug leads the raiding party against Mossward, threatening the peaceful townspeople.

Eleri says, "Look ahead! Those are not goblins!"
Eleri says, "Uruks!"
Wenna says, "Tegwyn!"
Tegwyn says, "I'm not afraid, Mother!"
Madthrug says, "Not afraid?"
Madthrug says, "This rat hasn't heard of the fighting Uruk-hai, boys!"

Objective 19

You must defeat Madthrug to ensure the safety of Mossward!

Madthrug says, "The machinery of war has been set in motion"
Madthrug says, "The time of the Orc is at hand!"
Eleri says, "Mossward! Attack!"
Madthrug says, "Kill them all!"

Objective 20

Tegyn's mother Wenna is grateful for your help saving her son from the Uruks.

'Geralt says, "Are you all right, son?"
'Tegwyn says, "If I had a better sword I could have slain him myself!"
'Tegwyn says, "I wasn't afraid!"
'Wenna says, "Oh, Tegwyn."
Wenna: Thank you so much for saving our son from those horrible creatures! What were they? Some breed of Orc? Why would they come to Mossward?
'We are most fortunate you were here, stranger!'

Objective 21

Meneldir stands by the gate of Mossward, considering the events of the last few minutes.

'Meneldir says, "What do you make of this, <name>?"
Meneldir:These Uruks have decorated their equipment with a sigil I have not seen before: the mark of a white hand. It may be the symbol of this raiding party, but for all the hurt this band has inflicted upon Mossward, they were still few in number and disorganized. What need have they for such a sigil? None now, thanks to our efforts, but still I wonder. I will think on it,<name>

Objective 22

Meledir has a request for you.
