Bestowal Dialogue

"The view from Weathertop is wide, and many have climbed that great hill to see all that could be seen. You have been brought hither to learn of the subtle influences connecting runes with nature, for words and speech-craft hold much sway over many powers in Middle-earth."

Background

You have come with Techeryn to Weathertop, where a tremendous storm swirls around the summit, to unravel some of the mystery surrounding runes and their connexion to the natural world.

Objective 1

Techeryn is standing on the path that winds up to the summit of Weathertop.

Techeryn is waiting to speak with you.

Techeryn: 'I have given you three stones, <name>, upon which I have inscribed a rune. I want you to climb to the summit of the hill and place them on three flat stones at the very top. You must then wait, Rune-keeper, for lightning to strike each of the rune-stones.
'Why the dismayed expression, <name>? You doubt this will happen? I am confident that it will.
'Be wary, for I have seen evidence of Orcs prowling in these parts of late.'
Techeryn says, "Look for suitable stones on the summit, but beware of prowling Orcs!"

Objective 2

  • Place rune-stones on flat stones upon Weathertop's summit (0/3)

Three flat stones can be found on the summit of Weathertop.

Techeryn has asked you to place three rune-stones on flat stones on the summit of Weathertop, and to wait for each of them to be struck by lightning.

Techeryn: 'Place the three rune-stones I have given you upon the flat stones on the summit of Weathertop. Once you have placed all three, you must wait for them each to be struck by lightning.
'Why do you doubt that this is possible, <name>? Do you deny that runes have some connecxion with the natural world?'
Placed rune-stones on flat stones upon Weathertop's summit (1/3)
Placed rune-stones on flat stones upon Weathertop's summit (2/3)
Placed rune-stones on flat stones upon Weathertop's summit (3/3)

Objective 3

  • Wait for lightning to strike all three of the rune-stones

Techeryn has assured you that lightning will strike all three of the rune-stones you have placed on the summit of Weathertop, and you are not to return to her until it does.

You hear harsh voices above the storm:
Orcs have come to the summit!
Lightning strikes the south-west rune-stone!
Lightning strikes the north-east rune-stone!
Lightning strikes the south-east rune-stone!
You should collect the rune-stones now that they have all been struck with lightning

Objective 4

Lightning has struck each of the three rune-stones you placed on the summit, and you should now collect them all again.

The stone still smokes from the impact of the lightning, but the rune remains the only marking

Objective 5

  • Bring rune-stones to Techeryn

Techeryn has come to the summit of Weathertop, and is waiting to speak with you.

Techeryn says, "<name>, over here!"
Techeryn: 'You have done well, <name>: not only to fulfill my instructions, but also in dispatching the Orcs!
'Look at this! Though each of these runes was struck directly by a bolt of lightning from the heavens, the only marking upon the stones remains the rune I carved on each of them before giving them to you: the rune for "thunder-bolt."
'Can you need any further proof than this that there is a power in the way we describe the natural world? Let us return to the Inn, <name>, and we can further discuss what this means as we descend.'
Techeryn: 'Are you ready to go, <name>? Let us remove ourselves from the storm.'
