Cirion

Cirion was the 12th Ruling Steward of Gondor, reigning in Third Age 2489 - 2567.

His reign was heavily marked by the Easterling Wars, where the chariot-riding Balchoth clan raided Gondorian settlements and wiped out the remaining population of Calenardhon.

Despairing, Cirion asked Eorl the Young and his Éothéod for help. Eorl rode south with 7000 mounted warriors and wiped the Balchoth from Calenardhon.

For this act, Cirion granted Calenardhon to Eorl to rule, giving rise to the nation of Rohan.

The pact between Eorl and Cirion would be remembered, and their bond of friendship later inspired the Rohirrim again to ride to the aid of Gondor in the War of the Ring.
