Sindar
Sindar (meaning "Grey People", singular Sinda, although the later term was not generally used by Tolkien) were Elves of Telerin descent. They are also known as the Grey Elves.
Unlike the High Elves, the Grey Elves stayed in Middle-earth and did not journey to Valinor, and have never seen its sacred Light. Círdan the Ship-wright, though he has sent many of his kin to Valinor, has never been there himself, and is thus counted among the Grey Elves.
In the First Age, most Grey Elves lived in Beleriand, in realms such as Gondolin, Nargothrond, Doriath or Ossiriand.
When Beleriand sank beneath the sea, many Grey Elves perished, but those who survived settled in places like Lindon, Imladris and Lórien.
In the Third Age, the Grey Elves are considered among the most noble of elves, only outshone by the few remaining High Elves like Galadriel. In Middle-Earth, the Grey Elves are of the ruling caste, leading the Silvan Elves of Lothlórien and Mirkwood.
Celeborn and his daugther Celebrían are counted among the Grey Elves, and the line of Kings of the Woodland Realm too, as Oropher, father of Thranduil and grandfather of Legolas, was born in Beleriand and lived in Doriath.
The Kings of Lórien, Amdír and his son Amroth, were also Grey Elves, but this bloodline died out when Amroth died childless.
