The Dreaming Dwarf
"I say again: show yourself to us, villain! Only cowards hide behind such a veil of deception!"

Background

A strange sorcery envelops the forgotten chamber deep below Gundabad. What secrets lie within?

Objective 1

  • Talk to Durin in the forgotten chamber

Durin stands in the forgotten chamber deep beneath Gundabad, boiling with rage.

Durin: 'Something is not right, <name>. Some servant of Mótsog the Traitor may lie in wait, seeking to harm us.
'Remain on your guard.'

Objective 2

  • Remain on your guard

Durin has asked you to remain alert for any sign of danger.

Durin says, "The statue of the Traitor is so life-like. Is this a tomb?"
Durin says, "I can almost hear him."
Durin says, "But how can I know the sound of the Traitor's words?"
Durin says, "The bearer of that voice died long ago!"
Durin says, "And yet I am put in mind of the Anvil of Winterstith, and of a voice that spoke through the ice."
Durin says, "It spoke of dwarves long-dead, and of great deeds."
Durin says, "It was the voice of a dwarf, not a dragon."
Durin says, "It was the voice of a friend, courteous but stern."
Mótsog says, "It was I who spoke to you, Durin my friend."
Durin says, "Fell sorcery!"
Durin says, "Explain yourself, villain!"
Mótsog says, "Sorcery, aye, but not of the sort you fear."
Mótsog says, "This is the work of the First Crafter."
Durin says, "Lies!"
Mótsog says, "I would not speak falsely to you, Durin, my friend."
Durin says, "And yet you bear the visage of Mótsog the Traitor!"
Durin says, "How do you know my name?"
Mótsog says, "I know you for my friend Durin, for I have seen you in all your guises during my long sleep."
Mótsog says, "Your outward form does not hide you from the sight of my dream."
Durin says, "You say you know me."
Durin says, "So too do I know you: Mótsog the Traitor, leader of the Greymauls, father of treachery."
Durin says, "Why should I trust your words?"
Mótsog says, "I have seen much you have forgotten."
Mótsog says, "I will show these sights to you, that you may remember them."
Durin says, "What do you think, <name>?"

Objective 3

The dwarf claiming to be Mótsog says he can show Durin what he has forgotten.

Mótsog: 'You are a friend of Durin? Then you too will see what I have to show him.'

Objective 4

  • Witness the visions granted by the stranger

The dwarf claiming to be Mótsog has promised to show Durin forgotten sights.

See, then, what you have forgotten
Durin says, "How can this be?"
Durin says, "That is... Durin the Sixth! We have to help him!"
Mótsog says, "There is no help we can provide, my friend."
Mótsog says, "This was to be your end."
Durin says, "Every dwarf knows the tale. But this vision is so lifelike..."

Objective 5

  • Talk to Mótsog

It cannot be denied that Mótsog possesses a curious power. How can he reveal these visions to you?

Mótsog: 'They called it Durin's Bane, but I knew it by another name, in another age. Long before the creature came to hide in this forgotten cavern I knew it as Askâdurs, and the memory of its scorching passage through my city in the heights is cruel.
'But that was long ago.'

Objective 6

  • Witness the visions granted by Mótsog

Mótsog has promised to show Durin forgotten sights.

Durin says, "Durin the Fifth, slayer of the dragon Thorog!"
Mótsog says, "So you were, and yet..."
Mótsog says, "...the dragon was also your end."
Durin says, "Does it always end thus?"

Objective 7

  • Talk to Mótsog

It cannot be denied that Mótsog possesses a curious power. How can he reveal these visions to you?

Mótsog: 'Aye. That is the fate of Durin in every age in which he appears.'
Mótsog's expression is devoid of emotion and impossible to read.
'I have seen them all.'

Objective 8

  • Witness the visions granted by Mótsog

Mótsog has promised to show Durin forgotten sights.

Durin says, "Durin the Fourth came to the aid of the Last Alliance, in distant Mordor."
Durin says, "How is it you beheld this?"
Mótsog says, "The First Crafter gave to me the dreaming sight."
Mótsog says, "I have seen all your victories and all your defeats."

Objective 9

  • Talk to Mótsog

It cannot be denied that Mótsog possesses a curious power. How can he reveal these visions to you?

Mótsog: 'It has been both curse and blessing to see these trials, for it was the will of the First Crafter that I should be unable to look away.
'I have seen moments of triumph, but so too have I seen defeats that would scar the iron heart of any dwarf, marking him forever with its imprint.'

Objective 10

  • Witness the visions granted by Mótsog

Mótsog has promised to show Durin forgotten sights.

Durin says, "When Sauron waged his war upon Eregion, Durin the Third fought well and bravely!"
Durin says, "Did he not?"
Mótsog says, Many were the glorious deeds you accomplished in that war, my friend."
Mótsog says, "But this was the last: retreating into Khazad-dûm, and sealing the doors."
Durin III says, "Is it done?"
Warrior of Khazad-dûm says, "Aye, my king. The outer door is sealed."
Durin says, "But the dwarves survived. The king did what needed to be done."

Objective 11

  • Talk to Mótsog

It cannot be denied that Mótsog possesses a curious power. How can he reveal these visions to you?

Mótsog: 'It has always been difficult for me to see these trials, unable to intervene.
'It is no reward, friend of Durin, to remain helpless in this. But is could not be otherwise. The dreaming sight cares not.'

Objective 12

  • Witness the visions granted by Mótsog

Mótsog has promised to show Durin forgotten sights.

Durin says, "Durin the Second ruled in Gundabad."
Durin says, "Would that I could have seen it at its height!"
Mótsog says, "But you did, my friend."
Mótsog says, "Can you not see yourself behind the guise of each ruler I have shown to you?"
Mótsog says, "Here it was that you offered Gundabad to the Zhélruka."
Durin says, "Stop! Stop these visions!"
Durin says, "Put an end to this nonsense!"
