Wiki host

  • There are a list of things to consider.
  • $wgArticlePath should not be /index.php/$1 -- Wikipedia uses /wiki/$1 and DDOwiki uses /page/$1. In my honest opinion, anything would be better than "index.php".
There's nothing wrong with the default setting that wikipedia uses, and if we changed it would break existing links from all the various fansites that linked here. --Lotroadmin (talk) 05:23, 24 July 2016 (UTC)
  • Extension:Purge is nice to make it much easier for people to clear the cache of a page without having to manually append ?action=purge or &action=purge to the URL for a page.

Can someone explain how this works? (Or is it really not yet implemented.) The MediaWiki page implies that there should be a new Tab at the top of the page called "Purge" on every page.

If you click the down arrow between the search box and the "watchlist" star, there's an option that says "Purge". Not sure if that was there before or not. -- Gestrid (talk) 17:33, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

  • Extension:ImageMap allows clickable image maps. This is a nice way to have a map of an area with the ability to click on various points of interest and it take you to the page for that poi.

As I read the MediaWiki page, this extension is automatically included with MediaWiki version 1.21 and above -- we are now running 1.23 -- or is that upgrade what = done.:)

  • Extension:InputBox works great for adding a specific search box to a page or having the ability to create a new page with a preload and set of specific parameters.

This extension would allow (the source above to render styled as css for one [once the pre is removed] and for two) the gadgets listed above to make it so that https://lotro-wiki.com/index.php/MediaWiki:Common.css#3._Special_pages would take you to section three on the page.   • Extension:Gadgets is a great extension to allow me to move all of the Category:Gadgets I copied over from DDOwiki that I made or modified from Wikipedia into the MediaWiki: namespace and make them easily available for everyone.

  • Extension:Widgets allows administrators (I recommend against a separate "Widget Editor" group and just add the right to admin) to make gadgets to allow walk-through and tutorial videos from YouTube or Twitter feeds or other widgets like the one for https://discord.me/lotro-wiki available for people to see.

  • Niether am I, which is why only by default only a special trusted group (widget_editors) is permitted. Personally, I'm of the mindset that's not good enough and only administrators should be trusted with such a thing (which is why the special group was deprecated in favor of it being admin only on DDOwiki with the most recent core update).   • I'd still like to see it installed, but I do agree that only a certain set of trusted users should be able to edit things in the Widget: namespace. I'd suggest the threshold be administrators but I would be okay if it was directors and we could all make edit requests on talk pages for it or whatever. Embedded YouTube walk-through videos and official Twitter feeds (Template:OnTwitter or Template:OnTwitter for examples) are very nice to have.   • Another thing I just noticed... Special:ListGroupRights shows (all) as not having (edit) but they have (createtalk), (createpage), (writeapi), (editmyoptions), (editmyprivateinfo), (editmyusercss), (editmyuserjs), and (editmywatchlist) of which none of those will work without an account or (edit).   • This makes it really hard for people who don't want to or are afraid to edit to make edit requests on talk pages. I think that should probably be a discussion for a different page to get more community feedback though. I'll propose that anons should be able to edit/create talk pages only perhaps. Anonymous editing is really a very bad idea. It leads to flamewars and worse. If people are afraid or don't want to create an account, then they have other problems. The WIKI is not a Chat room. We eliminted that functionality several years ago because, like the IRC they were never used, except by 2 or 3 people.
One cannot use Discord without registering. I see no reason why the WIKI should be any less restrictive.

  • Moot point, but the wiki should be less restrictive in this because it is intended to by a community built source of information and not just a social/chat site. Technically, anons are registered by their IP addresses, the only real purpose to creating an account is to publicly hide your IP. DDOwiki allows IP/anon editing - there is a VAST amount more spam from registered accounts than non. http://ddowiki.com/page/Special:Log/block for example shows that the vast majority of spam accounts are registered. The blocks on IP addresses by me are all IPs that were creating new accounts as fast as I was blocking the old ones. Technical 13 ( t | e | c | [ h] ) 18:35, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

  • Another question: If Lotroadmin was to implement these things (including changing index.php), would there be any downtime while everything was being done? If so, how much (rough estimate)? One reason I'm asking is, because this is likely the number one wiki about LotRO, we can't just go offline (or put up some maintenance page or something) without warning. Hey, as long as we're importing extensions, a couple useful ones (if they're compatible) could be User link and Ping. Ping comes out as "@USERNAME:" and notifies the user in the parameter that they've been mentioned, both by email (if set up) and by the Notifications feature on Wikipedia. User link does the same thing, but it comes out as "USERNAME". I'm not sure if the current implementation of [[User:USERNAME]] does this already on this site. (Come to think of it, Wikipedia's version of [[User:USERNAME]] also notifies the user.) -- Gestrid (previously Super3588) (talk) 06:19, 24 July 2016 (UTC)

Social Media links on this wiki...

I've probably made it clear what social media platforms i find worthless, but with Technical 13 push with social media, which do you feel actually makes sense to support here? I can understand the video related ones, but Facebook and twitter just doesn't appear to me or anyone that i've talked to at several age levels. Of course most of those are not gamers, and as I've avoided the perceived fads, what does make sense? YouTube, Vimeo, Twitch, Discord I see attractive, but IRC, Twitter and Facebook i don't.. (of course IRC isn't considered social media, but it's really the grandad of all this..) Keep in mind they all are supported, even Facebook has been removed from the heavy hammer spam filter, but what really needed. I don't like a lot of "stuff" because we can do it, we've always been on the lean side for customization, and I'm still unsure of what additional benifit these templates actually do provide. --Lotroadmin (talk) 04:39, 27 July 2016 (UTC)

I actually started a discussion at Talk:Main Page regarding linking to LotRO's social media from the main page. When the discussion turned to including the Twitch streamers as well, I suggested we just make a page with all the links on them and created a page in my userspace that can be moved to mainspace when ready. A CategoryTree bug?

This particular "quirk" appears to be an "interaction bug."
I encountered a problem with the Badgers page while attempting to indent the CategoryTree using colons.
When using ":" or "::" to indent the line: <categorytree depth="1" hideprefix="always" showcount="on">Badgers</categorytree> - that CategoryTree line is indented as expected,
however, the Category line at the bottom of the page displays at the left margin, instead of within the bordered area.
This "left justification" tends to overlap the left margin index of the page display.
Workaround: Using Blockquote achieves the desired indent, and leaves the "Category:" line within the display area where it belongs.
"CategoryTree" is an extenstion to the basic MediaWiki - apparently now indtegrated into the base release. See the special page: Special:version, and follow the link to the CategoryTree documentation; the explanation at the top of the page.
Our Version page shows a 2-year gap between the version of Media Wiki and of Category tree. However, on the MediaWiki documentation page, I don't find a version number. It appears to be listed as "Rwlease Status: Stable" and "Latest Version" as "continuious updates" -- which to me implies that it is part of the base relase now.
  • So one question becomes -- do we have an old version installed that is replacing the now released version?
  • Assuming our version is current, the second question then becomes, can you submit a bug report on this behavior.

Music samples

I'd like to add short 30-second audio samples of the various housing music listed on Ambient Music. However, the wiki does not currently allow uploading of .ogg or .mp3 files. Would it be possible to allow these file types and also would this be permitted under our "fan license" from Turbine? --Gaerlin (talk) 15:58, 6 November 2016 (UTC)

I've enabled the ability to upload several audio formats, but it's been hit and miss on browser support. Please do avoid any license file formats like mp3 (even though i guess it's okay to decode, but not encode). Lets consider this a test on 1) browser compatibility, 2) server load and 3) we still need to "tune" stuff. I want to lock down the file format to just one really, one that will support the most browsers and least server BW and load. I would like to also have a way to limit the song length, but unsure how best to do that. I'm not finding a good option so far. Tried .ogg/.oga/.opus (which are all the same format), which will play inline on Chrome and Firefox but not on Safari or IE/Edge (you just get a prompt to download the file so you have to use an external player). Also tried .wav but the files are too big. Also .flac are not reliably supported even on Chrome. Might we consider using .mp3 which is probably the most compatible? According to mp3licensing.com there's no royalties required for use of mp3 as long as you're an "entity with associated gross annual revenue less than $100,000". For what i can gather mp3 is still out as a file format sadlly, but i need to doublecheck the server libraries as i think there is a missing dependency as webm should be enabled and should work everywhere but iOS. After discussion on the Discord server, User:Amphoras suggested I make a bot account so that I can use the autosave feature of AWB instead of having to manually review 100+ edits. Someone should probably update Lotro-Wiki.com:General disclaimer with the appropriate copyright disclaimers for Standing Stone Games. Database Error

  • It's that specific edit that's got the issue. You'd have to look in the DB itself to see what the edit is and why it would be causing an issue. MediaWiki upgrade

With some luck we will be current with the MW releases again real soon, but first, I want to do some housecleaning on the extensions:

  • With the new upgrade the following extensions will be removed:
Cite
mostly is integrated with MediaWiki now and since it's unused, we probably don't need the additional hooks.
ImageMap
unused, but i think the map tooltip covers this better anyways.
  • Extensions that I am considering for removal - so editors, please speak up
Gadgets
value seems low (again), also screws up charset. (in other words, gadgets need to be disabled for every user by default for this to stick around)
Variable
only used once, but seems to have some value..
Loops
doesn't appear to be used, but seems to have some value...
CreateArticle
high value... We will need to find a replacement as the stability of the extension has been downgraded a few times, but I don't plan on removing it just yet since it's helpful on creating new pages.

For those in the know, I've removed traces of the old phpbb and the test wiki, and there will be no hope in reviving those features.

More spam

Changes to sidebar

Did you intentionally change the contents of the sidebar?
I losst contact with the server briefly somewhere before 8pm EDT, and a bit later, when I went to create a new Item, I realized that the tools in the sidebar had chaged.

Did we ever arrive at a solution to this problem? I.e. has anybody figured out a way to break these tables up but still have some kind of consolidated look at them?

Herb-master (Host of the West) Barter List is the latest to run afowl of the 500 item limit.

I suspect that as I get around to doing more of the barter lists from U20, that I will trigger others.

The only option I've found is related to the expensive parser functions like #ifexist but i'm not seeing that used in the templates. I modified the particular table (Herb-master (Host of the West) Barter List) which previously used multiple calls to the Reward template, to simply display the name of the item, instead of the pretty picture and super imposed count. If you look at the first table and compare it to the second, you will see what I changed to force the count down.
The particularly annoying part of the error, is that once the max count is hit, it stops expanding the remainder of whatever else is on that page - not just the following tables.

There is an #ifexist used in {{Icon}}, so any template that displays the item icon will could towards the limit. It could be avoided by directly linking to the icon image, but then any changes would have to be done manually everywhere. Amphoras (talkTalk to me!) 17:53, 9 April 2017 (UTC)

User promoted to admin

Hey, Lotroadmin. Just letting you know that I've promoted User:Steppenwolf to administrator. They seem to have the wiki's best interests at heart, and, since one of their main interests seems to be updating item pictures (as well as item pages), this will allow them to go ahead and delete the outdated pictures, as they have requested several times beforehand using the Delete Page template. They've already made use of the delete button a few times. While I haven't been very active in LOTRO or on the wiki in recent months (Life is busy.), I have checked mostly kept up with my watchlist notification emails and have noticed them several times through that. — Gestrid (talk) 01:49, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

Bad ads

There are again one or more ads which are causing problems.
I'm not getting the frezze issue with Safari, but at least the Arby ad does cause the page to reload.

These ads are becoming more and more annoying. They severely impact the ability to edit pages as they keep changing page focus to display the ad.
I.e. scrolling the page up or down from where you are working -- which normally does NOT incldue the ad.
You cannot stop them despite the fact that they display "||" and X-off boxes.
They also prevent my iMac from Sleeping! My iMac SHOULD go into sleep mode if 15 minutes of inactivity -- but because of these scripted adds, which never shut down, the "auto-sleep" function never activates, and I am forced to manually sleep the machine.

I also know how to block the vandals, change the visibility of revisions, blocks, logs, etc. I will ensure I will be very active to prevent the return of spambots or something of that, and I will protect the page which needs protection for excessive vandalism or edit warring. I will do my work with responsibility, and I won't fail to you.

New Table Class

I'd like to add a new class for tables that's based on altRowsMed, but adds style="padding-right:20px;". This would be useful for tables of items where the table width should be dynamic (to best accommodate different monitor resolutions/aspect ratios), but we want to keep good readability by adding padding to the right of each cell. OK I figured out how to add the class (edited Common.css). However, it doesn't seem to be working right. I created a new class called "altRowsPad" and copied the styles from altRowsMed to it, then added td { padding-right: 20px; }. The padding is working correctly, but the alternating background colors on rows are not (see User:Gaerlin/Sandbox/NewVerified for an example). I tried both "tr.odd" and "tr.nth-of-type(odd)" syntax but neither worked. Any ideas? --Gaerlin (talk) 13:34, 31 July 2017 (UTC)

Item Tooltip

Someone should change maxlevel line in the item tooltip, to output Maximum Level, not Maximum Target Level and also to place it above Minimum Level, the way it is in the game...

Not to sure what it is about the new top/bottom ads today on the wiki but they are wrecking havoc with the memory leak in Microsoft Edge Content Process. This process holds all recent content and since each advertisement is upwards of 50mb, each page refresh drives up the total memory stored in the process. After 5 minutes of surfing the wiki, my process is upto 1.2GB stored, 6 minutes 1,. Can you switch the ads being used on the wiki? Matthew.zellmer (talk) 15:04, 14 September 2017 (UTC)

I am experiencing something similar on Google Chrome. While browsing lotro-wiki in Chrome, periodically my entire machine will just freeze up for 5-10 seconds about once every few minutes. I notice when this occurs that the refresh icon is spinning on my browser windows that have lotro-wiki open. I think most likely it is refreshing the ads on the pages, but this wreaks havoc with my browser and indeed my whole machine. This problem started a couple of weeks ago. Also confirmed this issue in Crome and in Firefox as well. Firefox I do see the icons spinning in all open brower tabs. And each process keeps getting bigger I have 5 tabs, the oldest tab has over 530mb and growing, (5 min old), next tab 405mb (3 mins old). Spam filter shenanigans

Hiya. Has there been an update to the spam filter? It seems unusually aggressive, preventing me from posting on User talk:Tharondir because of the occurrence of certain words (that I can't type here because then I can't submit) earlier on his talk page. I just did a test post and i assume you deleted the filtered word? If not can you post here it in a clever (cle___ver) way or even pig latin might work.

I didn't want to remove random words from other people's messages on someone else's talk page, so they're still there. I'm also not sure if it would be optimal to do so, since they're common words and it feels kinda weird to censor your language in that way? If you try to post something on Tharondir's talk page, you'll see what I mean. Anyway, the very bad words are p__hone and g__m_ail (gasp). I know it sucks, but both of those words were used in the last huge spam attack where they added hundreds of pages in a matter of a few minutes across multiple IP address and accounts. Wiki Tooltip on an external website

Hello,

I’ve been trying to display LotRO-wiki Tooltips on my kinship website. As I was told in the Toltip script discussion, the feature was disabled some years ago. Is that true? Maybe something can be done? --ENDrain (talk) 17:43, 14 November 2017 (UTC)

I don't believe i have any blocks to prevent the tooltips from the server side. It's possible that someone hardcoded a URL in the user javascript space so the might need to be reviewed. Is There Anybody There?

I'm trying to get lotro-wiki based tooltips working on my guild's forum. As I learned, external tooltip feature is currently disabled at line 191 (commenting it makes tooltip loading proceed, even caching seems to work). Although, the tooltips themselves won't load due to Access-Control-Allow-Origin header not set. Can anyone from lotro-wiki team help me with bringing external tooltips live?

1- Display a tooltip on LOTRO-wiki based on information from an external website?
2- Display a LOTRO-Wiki tooltip on some external web site?
As I recall, this ability was specifically disabled many years ago for a variety of reasons.

Sadly, there does not appear to be anyone around who has worked with the original Java code. (and I'm a retired COBOL programmer) :(
First off -- what is the content of line 191 you refer to? What editor are you using to give you that line number?
However, my initial question still holds -- which are you trying to do #1 or #2?
The ability described in #1 is what I was referring to as being not allowed, in my poorly worded answer. . . "not allowed" does not mean prohibited -- but rather - no code supports that function.
With my limited knowledge of JavaScript, I don't see any obvious block.
#2 works fine as far as I know. (I can't test it currently since I don't have a working web server.)
If it doesn't work, it is more likely a problem with the external website allowing such references - especially if you are using some hosting site.


How are you attempting to reference the tooltip? {{:Item: Universal Solvent|mode=imlink_plain}} obviously, will only work locally on lotro-wiki.com
Are you getting the ereror messag defined as "EXTERNAL_LOADING" or is it simply not working?

Well, where to start...
What I'm trying is #2, to display a LOTRO-Wiki tooltip on an external website. To do that, I hook Lord_of_the_tooltips.js to my site and wrap an item name in <a href=> which links to the item's page on this Wiki. It does the job, the script runs and attempts to load a tooltip - it goes as far as showing a pop-up with upper-left corner of this Wiki visible in it. The last message I'm getting in browser console is this:

Which corresponds with line 185, function itfb_request(). (I'm using Google Chrome Developer Tools and Notepad++ for editors, they show identical line numeration.) It appears that this is where the code finishes it's execution in the case of a tooltip request from external (as opposed to internal - from this Wiki) source. I'm not a JavaScript or even HTML developer either, so from that point I did a lot of wild-guessing, blind-coding and googling and here is what I learned.
This code was never supposed to work. The basic idea is that this script attempts to load a piece of one page into another, but it's not that simple when the pages are located on different domains - belong to different Origins. In our case, https://lotro-wiki.com is one origin, and http://my.guilds.forum is another. I can load a page of your wiki in an <&iframe> on my site - which the script successfully does, but I cannot load a specific <&div> from that page which contains the tooltip itself in an <&iframe>.
One solution is to simply set the aforementioned header, but from what I read it's a bad solution securitywise. I'm not sure why, nor do I know how to do it anyway. I'm not even sure what an HTTP Header is.
Another solution would be to create a client-server interface between LOTRO-Wiki as the Tooltip server and possible Tooltip clients. You see, I can't just load a specific part of a webpage from a different origin, but I can recieve it as a JavaScript "message". In short, in addition to this client-side script we will need another, server-side script hosted esclusively on this site. I think I have a rough idea of how this should look, although I never had to write client-server interfaces before.
There're other possibilities, like loading a whole page in a <&div> and then parsing it down to the tooltip part (<&iframe> is a window-in-window, and <&div> is just an object, so I can do such things to it); or like calculating the offset of the tooltp in a page and scrolling an <&iframe> so that only the tooltip is visible... But I believe that these, and even client-server solutions, are shit-code.
I don't believe that this is how tooltips work on WoW sites. (BTW, there's no JavaScript code at the links you've posted, only instructions on formatting within that Wiki.) The thing is, Blizzard supports an open database of everything in their game, like Turbine used to do. I believe, from some WoW-tootip code I've seen and general programming experience, that this is how WoW tooltips are handled. The JS scripts on these sites are just extracting data from Blizzard DB and forwarding it to the front-end.


All that if I'm understanding technology behind it all correct, that is. I'm no professional. The bottom line is, in case I'm right, it's down either to me to write some shit-code to load ready tooltips from your pages to external ones, or for us all together to migrate to an actual database (which is a very cool and perspective solution).
By "migrating to a database" I understand writing software that would parse Item, NPC, Map and so forth pages of this wiki, extract relevant information from them and arrange it in an SQL query to be inserted into the database; and then writing JavaScript that would query the DB for a specific entry, recieve the data and arrange it in a template as we know them today, in order to show this template as a static tooltip on an item page or as a pop-up.

Keep in mind that cross-site scripts are generally fraud upon these days and with the SSL trend, it might not correctly work. The extension requires a newer version of the mediawiki software, so someday when i upgrade the MW version, i will look into upgrading your account. You would need to log into both accounts and send an email before i would merge them, but i don't know when i will be able to upgrade the MW, so there's no rush. If someone wants to merge user accounts, they need to log into both accounts and send a private messages via email this user on my talk page. Extensions - Purge replaced, Loops about to be removed

The purge and loops extensions haven't been actively maintained and won't be around after the next MW upgrade (soon i promise). Purge has been replaced with a gadget, there's only one page that seems to use the loops extension and we can revert that edit or create a template to build a deep case statement for finite sized loop. Legendary Content

I'm back! Anyway, I've been able to confirm with my own two eyes that some of the quests (at least some in the Dwarf intro) that have been removed from the Live servers are now available on the Legendary Servers. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we actually have any of those quests listed on the site (ex. Quest:Goblin Prowlers). Also, I was thinking we could update {{Obsolete}} to be able to notify users that the quest is only available on the Legendary Servers, but I'm not proficient enough in wiki template coding to add a parameter to it (ex. |legendary= so it will display something like "However, this [page type] is available on the Legendary Servers" below the "Due to ongoing changes..." bit. — Gestrid (talk) 00:35, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

I'd searched the wrong quest name. It's Quest:Intro: Goblin Prowlers. For some reason, I can see that the page was deleted and I see a link to view/ restore the page via Special:Undelete. But, when I click on the link, it states that "There is no edit history for this page," so I can't restore the page. Could the edit history have somehow been lost in the database after being deleted four years ago? This seems to be the same for Quest:Cave-dwelling Menace, Quest:Hill-dwelling Menace, and Quest:Frostmantle. Was able to figure out what happened to the deleted pages thanks to Rogue4ever on the Discord server. I didn't know there was a time limit to how long deleted content is kept. Anyway, I'm going to try restoring the pages from an Archive.org copies of them. This is a quick and easy fix, and avoids needing to go through and re-work every template to include a new parameter.
