Generic skirmish creature names

Hey there. I see you've been making some big changes to generic skirmish mob pages, combining separate mob pages into one with an overview. I see why that makes sense, although it does go against the usual creature page naming guidelines. If there's consensus about this, Help:Creatures should be updated with the naming of generic skirmish creature mobs. :) --Ravanel (talk) 20:00, 22 August 2018 (UTC)

The use of Interior

New topic. Some of the other locations need to have some adjustments. The wiki mostly uses Interior for friendly locations. For dungeons and interiors with mobs it uses Category:Public Dungeons or Category:Quest Instances. This is not described very well in the Boilerplate:Areas but there are more details in the pages Template:Infobox Interiors and Interiors. I noticed a couple locations that are miss-categorized e.g. Lair of the Gloom-lord. Keep up the great work. Matthew.zellmer (talk) 19:22, 17 September 2018 (UTC)

I thought of asking an admin but this is very simple, mindless job that I can do while I'm doing other stuff. There's no hurry to do the change so we'll get there sooner or later.

Change to creature boilerplate for recording deeds

Dark Images

Hi. I don't know whether it is your gamma setting, or that you take the pictures with your phone of your screen with the brightness turned down, while in a dark room, or some other factor, but the images you take are so dark people cannot see any detail. For example, the Dire-goat image Dire-horn when seen in the creature page is just a shadow. the same applies to you NPC and location images. While this may be what Mordor is like, could you consider ways to capture or create lighter images? I find waiting till daylight helps, and if you have the tools, lighten the image a little prior to upload. Also, when taking NPC images you may be getting too close, which makes it seem like you are looking down on the target, and the head becomes big and distorted, just take a step back and it is better proportioned. See the differences from your earlier version to mine in the wastes image for Peregrin Took? A few seconds extra just the check quality will make all the difference for images. Notes on your editing

Feedback on your editing:

For NPCs

  • In general, you write too much. You DO NOT need to record everything about everything, do not link every possible linkable word.
  • Do not overwrite the intros. Instead of saying “xxx was at the battle of abc in the middle of a mud pile fighting 15 orcs, a troll and a flock of seagulls” say “is encountered at the battle of xxx”. Why? 1. Spoilers. Let the players find stuff, and experience the quests, instead of having it all in a page. For NPCs players look for hints about where to find them the quests. 2. Wall of text – at the rate you are going Gimli will need 15 pages. 3. Too hard to check accuracy. 4. Future proof, less work for future volunteers to maintain. 5. you write too much.
  • You do not need a new paragraph every time the NPCs moves a few metres. You only need to say something the first time encountered, or the first time in that area under a section heading.
  • As an example for what to write for NPC, see Covadil. This provides a hint as to why they are there. That is all you need to write. Subsequent movements and encounters are handled by the quest material.
  • Do not repeat quest material in the NPC pages. See before and after my edit for Fairdal. However interesting, all the stuff taking up the whole page is repeated material already in the quest, and made a very daunting page.
  • Do not include a link to the quest when the NPC is merely landscape for that quest. Record NPC as being there in the location pages.
  • As a basic rule, only create a next section for a new area if there is a quest. Exception “may be” some key people mentioned in the books, if a reference is relevant.

Images

  • At Ondoher's Folly, you have stuffed up what were good images. The header image (Ondoher's Folly-1.jpg) was a perfectly good bright image of what the place looks like when players first see it. You not only replaced this with a different header image, you then moved it to the gallery and uploaded as a new version one of your black tile images. The whole page now is visually terrible, with all your black and red images that are virtually identical. As with text, you do not have to record everything.
  • Hyacinth covered the remainder of the image issues. Fix the Folly and put back the original header image.
  • Do not get carried away stubbing every image. Sometimes you need to be there. For example your have stubbled and reclassified Shorgrim images. They are the best possible images give things like chasms and ledges in the way, and he is not an NPC.

Quests

  • After an NPC says something, and the quest moves to the next objective, they will often have a blue icon and provide a hint of the next step that repeats some of the previous material. This is intended for those people who cannot complete the quest in one go and need a reminder. Do not include this repeat material in the quest as it disrupts the flow of the quest text. This was covered in the boilerplate. As before, you do not have to capture everything.
  • Do not link every linkable word. Do not say “there is a [ [ Signature ] ] [ [ Mob ] ]”, as everyone by now knows what signature is, and if not they will find it via the adjacent mob link. Just say “there is a signature [ [ mob ] ].
  • You do not have to link every mob if they are not specifically included. The quest might say “kill orcs” or “find rabbits”. You do not have to create some kind of disambiguation page, with a list of every possible orc or rabbit that satisfies the ques, and link there from inside the quest. Just leave it un-wikied. Use the walkthrough to indicate what and where – but do not over-write.

Over-writing

  • Did I mention, that you are doing too much? The wiki is not an encyclopedia, nor a novel. It is a set of reference materials by players for players.
  • Consider the users, who want to play, and use the wiki to find key information. They mostly do not want to read a book, in-spite of what you think. They do not want extensive spoilers.

Please go back and review your older material in light of these guidelines. It is your problem, you fix it.

Fixed Images

Ok here's my feedback for you - your images after lightening them up are too grainy and still not very good quality. Maybe too much on the brightness/contrast, or perhaps you just do not have a computer that can take good screenshots. Try retaking them when the sun is out - at zenith is best - and then slightly tweak it as too much produces what you are showing us. Either that or hang up the screenshot hat and find another project that better suits your computer's capabilities. Rogue (talk) 13:58, 5 October 2018 (UTC)

In answer to my talk page - Testing in game settings sounds like a great place to start - I realize that there are some cases where it's always dark and in those cases do the best you can and let me know in discord when you have a test image of what you can get out of messing with those settings and a program like Gimp and we'll see if it's acceptable to use and if it works. Otherwise ya, I'd say leave those types of situations for screenshots to other editors.
