Thrór lived first in the Grey Mountains, at Thikil-gundu of the dwarf-realm of Grárik. The Longbeards were driven from the Steel Keep by 2589 T.A., when Vethúg Wintermind slew Thrór's father, Dáin I, and younger brother, Frór. Thrór returned to Erebor and reestablished the Kingdom Under the Mountain while his other brother, Grór, settled in the Iron Hills. Erebor was prosperous for years, and Thrór kept friendship with Carc, one of the great ravens of the north. This peace lasted until Smaug the Golden descended on the mountain in 2770 T.A. and drove Thrór and his people from their halls.

Following Smaug's assault on the Lonely Mountain, Thrór led the remnants of his people west (those who were not slain or fled to the Iron Hills). They settled for a time at Zudrugund, on the fringes of Dunland, and remained there for many years. Thrór in time grew restless, passing rule and the heirlooms remaining to him to Thráin, among them the dwarf-ring Handórm. He went with Nár, his old friend and esquire, to the East-gate of Moria. Thrór entered alone, and there was killed by Azog, the Orc chieftain. His head and body were thrown out to where Nár waited, his head carved with Azog's name. When Thráin at last heard of this, he called the seven dwarf-clans together into the Haban'akkâ, the Reckoning-host, and began the Sixth War of Dwarves and Orcs.
