News link

The "News" link on the main page goes to a page with the most recent news article being from March 2008. Maybe we should just can this and point that link to the news forum on the lotro forums? --Gaerlin 02:56, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Just created the new patch page: Patch Notes - Vol III Book 2, maybe good idea to update this in news-section. --Tiberivs 08:54, 9 September 2010 (EDT)

Added official patch-notes, for next upcoming patch: Patch Notes - Vol III Book 2 Patch 1 --Tiberivs 04:32, 2 November 2010 (EDT)

Skirmishes

Do you think skirmishes merit a separate box on the main page? This system seems to be quite broad (encounters, soldiers, rewards, deeds, etc. etc.) and have quite a profound influence on the game. If not a separate box, where should we put this in? Orions 12:22, 27 November 2009 (UTC)

With Instance Join now (Skirmishes + Classic instances) this should very well now be a separate box on the main page. --Marble 01:05, 10 November 2010 (EST)
I second that. Skirms are turning out to be a pretty major part of leveling once you hit 30+ Saromil (talk) 23:41, 12 August 2012 (EDT)
While everything cannot have its own box on the main page I cannot say whether skirmishes would have or would not have one. Either way, we can always discuss and adjust boxes, their content, and what is emphasized and what not. That would be a new topic at this page though. If not for anything else than: "re-designed front pages indicate activity and attract more interest than static pages" ;)
However, I still feel as a beginner with Lotro and cannot really say how to juggle the many aspects of the game over each other. How to prioritise them, in other words; everything is of course very important for the individual and his two friends, but perhaps not in the bigger picture. I have understood, though, that skirmishes are big for many: levelling, marks-hoarding, etc.

The Summer Festival Returns

Starting 29th June and ending 26th July, the Summer Festival returns to Middle-earth!

There's a lot going on this Summer Festival. All your usual favourites are back, including the Taste of Hobbiton at The Hill and Keg Racing by Frerin's Court. The Ale Association and Inn League are both back looking to recruit new members.

You can find the Summer Festival celebrations taking place in the following areas of Middle-earth;

Duillond – Ered Luin
The Party Tree – Shire
The Festival Grounds – Bree-land
Thorin's Hall Bar - Thorin's Hall

Have fun!

Suggestions/Feedback

Would like to suggest that the Projects link under "Contributor's Corner" point to Projects instead of to the category page. Thanks! Sethladan 18:54, 5 October 2010 (EDT)

Someone with permission to edit the main page needs to fix the Quests link. It currently points to http://www.lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Quests when it should (maybe) point to http://www.lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Category:Quests, and as such generates an error page when you attempt to traverse the link if you are not logged in with an account on the Wiki (N.B.: It's been like that for months). If you ARE logged in, it goes to another page that isn't the Category:Quests page. Don't understand the strange behaviour. TIA! Eldurgae 20101207 16:02 (PST).

Hi Eld - thanks for catching this! I fiddled with Quests a little bit and it should display correctly now for nonregistered users as well. It's a quick fix that warrants some further investigation, but at least the page actually works, heh. I also think Quests is the best target for this link since it's designed (I think?) to be kind of a launching off point for all information related to quests. Categories are probably best kept out of sight and used for organizational purposes. P.S. Welcome aboard! :) Sethladan 00:03, 8 December 2010 (EST)

why are the servers down

today the server has been down for almost 4 hours it was working earlier this morning now the main page on the website or the game wont work it says cannot connect to the data center why are they down and when will it be back up? just wondering if you know about it please post something on here thanks. And i am only a player not a creator. Jan. 30,2011 Sunday

Seems like everything Turbine-related is down; you can check out their Face_book (http://www.face_book.com/LOTRO) or Twitter (http://twitter.com/LOTRO) for updates. They're having a problem with their datacenter - it could be related to all the bad weather we've had in the Northeast US recently. As of an hour ago they were still working on the issue - hope this helps and that you're able to get on and playing again soon! Sethladan 17:53, 30 January 2011 (EST)
P.S. LOTRO-Wiki s not affiliated with Turbine; we're all just fans and players like you. :)

Updates

  • I created a page for the new update notes: Patch Notes - Update 3 Lost Legends of Eriador. It'd be great if someone could link them. The front page is admin-locked though.
  • There's no event on now. The Anniversary event shouldn't be linked from current events. :) --Torang 14:28, 23 May 2011 (EDT)

Sorry, I did not make myself clear. Its not a 'skin', its as template:round corners|simple template you put in front of the padding style that takes advantage off CSS3. CSS3 Update

The main page has received a significant cosmetic upgrade thanks to the work of SChalice. After several months of the proposed revision being available for comment at Main Page/Main Page CSS3 Example, there seemed to be no opposition to the renovation, so I have gone ahead and ported the changes over. Please feel free to post here if you encounter any quirks with colors, corners, or other display oddities. Be sure to include your browser and version so we can correct the issue as soon as possible. Thanks again to SChalice for the styling and to everyone who provided feedback and support. Enjoy the new look! Sethladan 14:45, 20 July 2012 (EDT)

Links

I believe we should change the link to raids to go to the raids page instead of the raids category. It also has a list in the end, so its more informative. There might be other similar ones, so I guess its worth giving a look. --Gwenwyfar (talk) 11:34, 14 September 2012 (EDT)

A) In this case, definitely -- the Category page frequently contains information which points to multiple pages and is transcluded into them -- however, that is clearly not the case here.
B) All that said, Why on earth are "Raids" listed under "Instances?" NOBODY looks for information about "Instances" -- it is an "insider" term, which wile technically correct, is not used by those who play the game. Many "Instances" are in fact parts of quests -- especially "session plays"
I had to read the page multiple times and still could not find it, had to resort to "find in page." Or put another way... it doesn't scan. To me it would make much more sense to have Raids listed under "Combat."
C) And naturally, this kind of "topic" -- brings up the fact that INSTANCES badly needs to be re-written since the advent of the "Instance Finder." (You will note that the page doesn't even mention the existence of the Instance Finder.) Conceptually, the whole thing has changed. The definition of a "World Instance" is probably now applicable to ALL instances. (I don't "hardly never" use them as I don't Raid as a matter of course, so I can't really offer suggestions here.) And the World Instance page needs to define the abbreviation "QP." I know it links to the page, but like the column "Abbr." the page needs to identify what is meant by them. Something like "Abbr. is the term frequently used in LFF or OOC chat to refer to this location." And while I'm at it, the layout of everything centered makes this page incredibly hard to read -- they eye can simply not scan the page without jerking all over the place.
Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC (talk)
B: For me it makes sense.
The main page adjusted for the custom layout is here, the main page as it is doesn't fit the custom layout at all :P (Unless you mean something else)
Another link which should either be removed or have the page created is "Policies". We don't really have a page for wiki policies, anyone who clicks that link is just gonna waste his time as it is now.
Gwenwyfar (talk) 12:48, 14 September 2012 (EDT)
About the idea of linking Raids to the Raids page instead of the category: I think that's a good idea, since the page would be much more informative, and it looks to be reasonably up to date, as far as I can tell.
Getting rid of the Polices link: I agree with that too. How embarrassing, to have an empty stub linked from the main index page. I'd like to go ahead and change those two things, unless somebody disagrees.
As for whether Raids should be under Instances or Combat, I think it makes sense the way it is. There are some people (mostly from other MMOs I think, or maybe I'm just being prejudiced) who use the term "raid" to mean any kind of instanced content. But I know plenty of folks who use the term Instance, especially since we had the Instance Finder added. It would also make a lot of sense to have Raids under Combat, but then really the other items under Instances should go with it, and there's not room for that. The two sections "Gameplay" and "Middle-earth" are closely linked anyhow, but I see the latter as being more about the world, in which case the instances and raids, which usually have to be discovered in the world before you can enter them, fit in well. -- Elinnea (talk) 20:28, 24 September 2012 (EDT)
I've changed the raid link and removed the policies link. But another thing I've noticed is the item indexes link: I think it would be better to leave it as its page name (master item index), which sounds much more descriptive of what is in it.

Why is Special Events hidden way down in the rightmost column?

Yes, why is Special Events hidden way down in the rightmost column?
Personally I would have expected them to be in the News box, still to the right but topmost. Is it "just because"? Or is there a reason? -- Zimoon (talk) 13:27, 24 September 2012 (EDT)

Good question. I'm unaware of any specific reason, but it could easily be swapped with the "official site/forums" links, which aren't quite news-related. Sethladan 19:45, 24 September 2012 (EDT)
I'm in favor of moving it up to News & Updates. Other than the Patch notes, the festivals and special events are the only thing we change regularly on the main page, so it's almost the news-iest thing on there. -- Elinnea (talk) 20:08, 24 September 2012 (EDT)

Anniversary Celebration 2013

It is Anniversary Celebration 2013 now, or well the real event have not begin yet but the old event stuff is available now. Mybe that should be put into Special Events?

--Cheatcat (talk) 03:55, 18 April 2013 (EDT)

  1. The current Anniversary Celebration is scheduled to last until 30 April... and may have been extended by one or two days because of the maintenance.... the Calendar has not been updated.
  2. The actual Anniversary of the launch is 24 April (2007)... some announcement is scheduled for that day.
  3. There is also a new "Hobbit Present" apparently scheduled to start with Update 11.

Center image

Somewhat random question here...thoughts to changing the center image of Gollum on the main page File:Gollum.jpg to File:Ring2.png instead? --Savi (talk) 20:40, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

2D vs 3D image. For some reason, I thought we discussed this before, when the last revision to the main page was done, User:Gwenwyfar/Sandbox -- but I don't see that discussion around -- probably just looking in the wrong place since Setledan deleted the actual "test page" a while back.
Personally, the ring image is probably "more hip" (cool, groovie, with it or whatever todays' term happens to be) for the generation brought up on Jackson's movies.
  • However, I suspect that the main issue will be one of Copyright. Especially, since from what I can tell, the Artist, Todd587 (http://todd587.deviantart.com/) is a commercial artist. We would need to get permission to use it. Make certain to check with LotroAdmin to see if there is an issue with copyright vs the Wiki Copyright "stuff." I thought there was a separate graphics copyright message, but I can't find it.
Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 08:01, 25 February 2014 (UTC)
Certainly not a copyright expert myself...but how would using it on the front page be any different than having it saved on the site as it is already (legality wise)? --Savi (talk) 21:05, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
There is a separate statement for content that belongs to Turbine (per their request) which includes copyrighted works like screenshots, but nothing for other folk's work. The image probably should be deleted if we don't have permission, and re-uploaded when we do. Keep in mind that some copyrights, might not allow us to modify the image as uploaded. If someone has a deviantart account, you might just ask for permission.
Another option is to hold a contest for the center image, something we did for the logo a while back.
--Lotroadmin (talk) 22:14, 26 February 2014 (UTC)

Another somewhat related question...I've been running through the unused file list to try and clear out some things that are just taking up space for no reason, and came across a few of the images from the main page, but that do not appear to be used themselves...File:Mainpage-icons.png and File:News and Updates-icon.png for example. Are these backups? If so should we make a link to them somewhere? I started a discussion about the first image I came across at File talk:News and Updates-icon.png, but as it never showed up in the recent discussions tab I figured it was wiser to ask it here.--Savi (talk) 14:40, 27 February 2014 (UTC)

I believe all of the front page images are composites. I haven't looked, but would guess that they are/were built and are either directly in the css or part of a different image. The entire Front-page was completely re-done by User:Gwenwyfar or User:SChalice (I believe). The "old" Work-page and its talk page have been deleted, so I don't know if there is a way to find out for certain short of bringing it back. ( Main Page/Main_Page_CSS3_Example

Ok, found it: File:Mainpage-icons.png -- See: User_talk:Lotroadmin/Archive2#Icons
Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 17:05, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
The Mainpage-icons.png is a 'sprite' which is a trick to speed up page load times by minimizing file accesses on the webhost. Since the main page is the most viewed page, i've created the sprite and also optimized the key images to minimize the size. Sadly this trick makes it appear difficult to update the icons for the main page. MediaWiki has discussed enabling sprites in the past, but I haven't heard anything for a few years now. --Lotroadmin (talk) 19:12, 28 February 2014 (UTC)

Monster Play Section: Freep Subsection Addition

Hey all! I was wondering if it would be possible to have a few subsections added uner the freep section so we can update their part in the Moors. It looks so weird that it's blank, and I know that Tharondir did some updates on their armor, but we don't have a tab for it on the main page!? I was hoping for a consumablessection, armor section, weapons section, and maybe up at top, a lingo section? New players typically don't know the lingo, so, considering we cater to the uninformed, I think we should include that!

Goblinazz (talk) 15:50, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

I think adding two subjections would suffice for now. My suggestion:
Creeps
ClassesRaces
Warband Maneuvers
Freeps
ArmourQuests
--Tharondir (talk) 10:14, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
Added! I always thought "Freeps" looked a little lonely there, myself, but I don't PvMP, so I never knew what to put there. Feel free to comment further if you'd like more stuff there. Sethladan 17:50, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! Once more content for freepside gets updated I'll try to bundle the information in freep articles that could be added here. I think we could have at least one more subsection, but I'm not sure what it could be yet. --Tharondir (talk) 17:57, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

A More Exciting Theme? (At least for home page)

Ok, Im a bit of a artistic person, and looking at other game wikis (media wikis), they mostly have better game images, epic wallpapers for the backgrounds (I know there are some animation-rendered wallpapers of lotro, not sure if they are copyrighted*) etc which could spice up this unofficial wiki. I am also thinking of those kind-of annoying gradients on the front panels. I could hand out some ideas, and even help a bit but I have limited time (As I guess is a problem for everyone).

Is it possible to just add a simple background? It might clash with a few things tho)

(*Such as http://p1.pichost.me/i/6/1289706.jpg, http://p1.pichost.me/i/6/1290321.jpg I have seen some more epic ones but cant find them. [Also minus the logo]) ⇒ Authades ⇔ Talk ⇐ 03:11, 25 July 2014 (UTC)

You're definitely not the first one to suggest "jazzing up" the front page a little bit, heh. We had a nice "spruce-up" about two years ago (compare this revision and the revision after that), and I know Gwen spent a lot of time coming up with a custom skin - see if you can find her CSS file and try that out.
Speaking for myself, I'm not too much a fan of flashy backgrounds and images (which is why I'm not an artistic person - good thing there are graphic designers like you around!), but there's no reason we can't make some small changes and see what people think. While I don't think that a background image like those you suggested would really fit with the low-key style of the site, I'm curious at what other suggestions you might have (and maybe other people will disagree with me about the image). For example, what's annoying about the gradient? How would you recommend changing those? Feel free to make up a sample page so we can "see it on film," as it were, and compare. Sethladan 12:45, 26 July 2014 (UTC)

Well I think the main difference is that some (not all) wikis, have, in general, textures, and ui frames etc from the actual game (Either that or similar style.)
I'm not saying we should copy these but an example is this wiki: (http://wildstar.gamepedia.com/Wildstar_Wiki) (I know, it is made by curse, but still is a good idea).
They have simple scrolling background with icons for each class, which we could easily do.
Also check out these: (http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Minecraft_Wiki) (http://scrolls.gamepedia.com/Scrolls_Wiki)
Scrolls, has a simple low-profile texture as a background.
(Also, I could redo the logo for someone to plonk in the code. Would featuring the lotro logo in the wiki logo trigger copyright issues? If so, I could just add some of the text effects, and font used in the game.)

⇒ Authades ⇔ Talk ⇐ 23:12, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

Another Idea: We could use these on the race pages etc:
http://www.lotro.com/sites/default/files/characters//elf.png
http://www.lotro.com/sites/default/files/characters//dwarf.png
http://www.lotro.com/sites/default/files/characters//hobbit.png
http://www.lotro.com/sites/default/files/characters//man.png
(Is there a test main page I can try whacking some stuff on?)

⇒ Authades ⇔ Talk ⇐ 23:31, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

We already do have images on the race and class pages, but there's no reason they can't be updated for a more refreshing look. As far as testing, I don't know of any demo pages for the Main Page, but you could create a subpage of your user page for a sandbox and copy over the code to play around with.
Regarding the logo, there was a logo contest years ago (maybe 2007-8 or so? before my time) with several designs created by members of the editing community and voted upon. Although I know even major corporations change their logo and branding over time, I like keeping that part of our history. Sethladan 16:20, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
I know the Wiki is a registered Fansite with Turbine -- but I don't know exactly what that means. I do not know if we can simply use graphics from Turbine's web site, or only in-game screenshots. I know we can use the content from the "Skinning Pack" posted over on LotroInterface.com, but that is primarily for modifying the in-game UI look.
The problem with the "look" of the wiki is one of age. Personally, I like the clean lines an uncluttered look of the Wiki. I really am offended by the "busyness" of most of the other sites I see. In general I don't find them attractive, just "hip" and, especially those (like lotro.com) which are dark backgrounds very hard to read. But as I say, it's an "age thing." I've been around since the beginning of the Web when you basically had 8 colors to work with!
Following on with Seth's "history." Most of the structure of the Wiki was defined back in 2007, by the group of folks who created it. Aside from LOTROadmin, and Rav, I don't see any of them around any more, and those two are not involved in the day to day work on the Wiki. Also, as many of the founders were Europeans, they had a tradition of using IRC, and so there was a fairly active chat for the Wiki... which has not bee used at all for the past year, except for one brief discussion. I got LOTROadmin to install a Mumble server to see if folks would rather use voice chat -- but I think I'm the only one who has ever logged in to it. I don't know if it is just the fact that the participation in the Wiki has dropped off dramatically in the past year or the fact that the newest editors simply do not have any sense of community -- like the F2P folks in the game.
So, all I can say is -- copy the front page to a page under your ID, and you can copy in the CSS to your private css directory, and go from there.
If you are using the default skin Vector, User:Authades/vector.css is your private CSS page. (Skin is set in preferences). What I do not know is what order that css page is applied in -- if it will completely override the default css -- MediaWiki:Common.css. --- at least that was the page name... I just noticed that sone recent update to the MediaWiki engine has a new entry on the Appearance tab, which has a different name.... or maybe it applies across all skins now. I don't know.
Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 23:42, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
I agree with Magill here, I like the "clean" look of the Wiki, especially the white background. Other wikis have colorful backgrounds, popups, etc., and other bright and colorful distractions. And that's what they are, just distractions. At least for me, it's hard to focus on one thing (ie. the article I'm trying to find/edit) when there are so many different things popping out, all trying to make you look there. I like how everything here is neat and crisp, and especially the background is white, so it's east to read the text. That said, I'm not opposed to have the main page spruced up a bit, as long as it isn't any really flashy. Balorgor (talk) 00:41, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
Ok, I get your point, with theme and all, and the backgrounds. They will probably have to stay at this stage. I do think we need things a bit more obvious, and a bit less technical on the main page, and be consistent in the colours we chose. I have started playing around with some stuff on my page, and just making things a bit more simplistic but still classy like you want. ⇒ Authades ⇔ Talk ⇐ 10:18, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
