we don't have a convenient link for Combat general concepts. One of the reasons I added the information on Combat Timers to the main page is that there did not seem to be a logical place for information on this topic elsewhere. do we have another area anywhere on general combat that we can link from? Or do we need a Combat page link on the main page?--Nemmerle 06:06, 6 April 2007 (PDT)

Depending on what exactly you have in mind we could add Combat section to Gameplay or its a case of Game Mechanics (like the stuff you posted) and then its probably better located under Game Guides with formulas that are going to be added as they are discovered... --Xander 10:52, 6 April 2007 (PDT)
I'm thinking we need a link under Gameplay as you suggest, where we can link the page I did on combat timers, style combinations, etc. Maybe sensible to link the info on Conjunctions there as well. That way we can create some guidance for people new to MMORPGs like aggro management, how to cooperate in combat, crowd control, etc.--Nemmerle 21:15, 7 April 2007 (PDT)

OK, I think I will create a Combat page and link it here, rather than the main page. That way we can see if it fits on the Main Page and which category to drop it under. This will allow me to develop some of the content while we still think about how to include it.--Nemmerle 06:20, 9 April 2007 (PDT)

unless anyone objects, I'll take the new Combat page live by linking it to the Main page today.--Nemmerle 06:04, 11 April 2007 (PDT)

Howdy folks, just joined the site and have a suggestion or two. I was thinking it might be easier to group Traits, Skills and other similar abilities into one long page instead of giving them their own separate tiny pages. For example: Head-butt, along with the other Dwarven Racial Traits could all be merged at the bottom of the Dwarf Traits page. This would minimise links for people, and for pages with a lot of Traits, or whatever, anchor links would let people jump down to the desired entry.

What do people think about this? Sound like a good idea? Cybogoblin 11:39, 11 April 2007 (PDT)

I dont understand the suggestion - it seems like the Skills page is already pretty long and the Traits page is huge. For my own part, I'd rather have shorter pages and more links. this keeps the visual display from getting too cluttered. Why do you prefer longer pages and fewer links? Is there a reload time problem from the server?--Nemmerle 12:24, 11 April 2007 (PDT)

Euro vs US differences

Another thought - should we have a link to (and indeed the page) a page covering the major differences between Euro & US servers at any one time? I guess this partly depends on just how far apart they are likely to be. From what I've just been reading in the Euro beta forums, they'd like to keep us together but it may be a case of "don't hold your breath". DancesInTrees 11:55, 23 March 2007 (PDT)

I would definately document any major differences and include a template that we can track these differences with. i.e {{Euro Version}}

Euro Version

as one example of how to solve this. --Hinney 12:48, 23 March 2007 (PDT)

My guess is that the differences between the Euro and NA versions are temporary, only until release. By then, the descriptions, stats, and other stuff will be stabilized. It is only because the game is still in active development that things are appearing different at the moment. I would say hold off on trying to "track differences" simply because it would be a waste of your time if things settle down in a month. For euros trying to rely on the data right now, I guess it's a bummer but it just seems like far more effort than it's worth to me. --Hellis 16:55, 23 March 2007 (PDT)
A couple of quotes from Satine (our Community Liaison Manager) might be useful ~
"Localizing a game with this amount of content, and to a high level of quality has been a challenge we feel we successfully pulled off. However, this has combined with patching challenges, stress test data, hardware installations and some EU-specific blocking bugs to leave us further out synch with the US than we would have liked. That said, we have resolutions to all key issues in place or about to be rolled out, and we’re confident the Beta’s been an excellent vehicle to ensure a solid launch."
So we should be the same at launch?
And as regards the future ~
"With regards to patching in the future, as we've always said, we intend to keep the cross-Atlantic patch "lag" down to a minimum. There may be times when it's in our best interests to hold back on them for example if there's a nasty bug however, wherever possible, we will bring them to you as soon as we can."
Hopefully not too different then.
As for "euros trying to rely on the data right now" - we'll be entering our data, you'll be entering yours - I thought a brief overview of current differences would mean we don't go changing each others unnecessarily. eg my notes on how many virtues can be equipped, or whether essence of athelas et al can be bought from mpcs. DancesInTrees 01:28, 24 March 2007 (PDT)

I agree that such a page is a good idea - populating it may be a challenge for a while, given that there are not going to be that many European Players in April. Just yesterday we were discussing the cost of a Horse, and the question of whether the discrepancy was the difference between the European current build and the NA current build was raised.--Nemmerle 06:20, 28 March 2007 (PDT)

Style Comments

Any chance the site CSS can be updated to make links in this template more easy to read? They currently show as dark blue on black.

Maybe something like:

.skill-infobox a:link { color:inherit; text-decoration:underline; }
.skill-infobox a:visited { color:lightgrey; }

Word on the street is that it's done. --Hinney 16:02, 23 March 2007 (PDT)

The Monster Play background is rather loud, compared to the subtler blue of the rest - any chance of toning it down a bit? DancesInTrees 01:28, 24 March 2007 (PDT)

It is rather loud, but monsters are loud right? heh.. I will see if i can make it match the blue a tad more. --Hinney 14:37, 24 March 2007 (PDT)

Give me some examples on images for this page and i will see if i can work some gimp tickery into it.--Hinney 09:55, 23 March 2007 (PDT)

How to add new pages?

I've included the Landmark coordinates for the "There and back again" posts on the beta forums but I have NO idea how to create new pages in the wiki. Alternatively, as somebody pointed out, putting these coordinates into the regions section makes it look messy - if somebody knew how to do this and wanted to move them, that would be great.--Jnmontario 07:27, 25 March 2007 (PDT)

-nevermind - I looked it up.  :)--Jnmontario 07:31, 25 March 2007 (PDT)

I actually added the COMPLETE There-and-Back-Again thread in the Locations area, posted under the page Septascarabe's really REALLY long list of Locations --Nemmerle 06:22, 28 March 2007 (PDT)

The login screen calls the realms/shards as worlds..

I moved the "List of Realms" to the "List of Worlds" after noticing the login screen listed them as "worlds". Now i noticed this is a bit confusing with the World section.. Do i revert my edits, rename World, or just leave them how the are now? --Hinney 23:47, 27 March 2007 (PDT)

Offical Lotro websites and forums

We should add the NA and Euro lotro websites here along with the official forums. If anyone knows the Euro ones please add them. --Hinney 02:39, 28 March 2007 (PDT)

- and I think its a good idea :) --Tjikke 06:45, 28 March 2007 (PDT)

Thanks for the list.. The websites don't seem to be that official.. lol... How realistic will it be for the folks in the EU to use that? I don't even see support for other languages.. (i.e. the website is as arrogant as i aka, self-centered american) On another note, I hope the slightly modified layout is ok.. --Hinney 00:28, 29 March 2007 (PDT)
The link to the forums isn't correct, is it just only for EU? --Hinney 11:34, 2 April 2007 (PDT)
The forums are correct - but they may be blocking outside the EU?
And the other is indeed the main Euro (Flash-over-heavy) site - there are flags hidden in teh corner for language changes. DancesInTrees 07:06, 4 April 2007 (PDT)

new page for contributors?

hi, i think we could use a page where we could look first after login for some updates or changes that concern some sections... just a central place where one could hint at something or suggest something and all could discuss it... what do you think?

I'll give an example: "Names" - we should imho have one way of naming pages... I mean for example the regions... if a region has an elven name, do we name page by this name? or do we use translation that is also used from time to time in game and in books?
  • one example for it would be Ered Luin and Blue Mountains... but its not so easy since game itself isn't consequent and uses not Hithaeglir but Misty Mountains for another region... what do we do about it?
  • 'til now i just added a redirect for another name, since someone could look for it by this name, and in that case would be redirected to the other page...

That is just one of the examples... where should one go for questions like that? do we just use "talk" pages, which are often overlooked by other contributors?
--Xander 03:29, 1 April 2007 (PDT)

Xander, we have a page called "How to Contribute" that should serve this purpose. It's under other topics - not sure why I can't link to the page name - it may be Help:Contents --Nemmerle 06:27, 4 April 2007 (PDT)

Apples and Oranges =)
"How to contribute" is a help page with guidelines and so on... call it "quick start with wiki" if you will...
What I was talking about and made page for is a central place where a contributor could look for changes (made or proposed) that affect major sections of wiki , policies and so on AND discuss them...
we're here in a community united to create and make best ever wiki =) and we need to talk about some things before they are added, made or changed and we have to have on way of doing things and not do each his own thing --Xander 06:37, 4 April 2007 (PDT)
So how about using the Talk page for Help:Contents for this purpose? Help:Contents is the logical place new contributors will head first. We could put a note on it saying that the Talk page for it is a general forum for discussing design changes.--Nemmerle 07:23, 5 April 2007 (PDT)
There's already a getting started section for in the Help:Contents and the Help Talk page would be an ideal place to ask questions about editing --Hinney 08:01, 5 April 2007 (PDT)

Kinship Levels

Hi all,

While looking for info about what you get at each Kinship level (Lifetime). I noticed (or i couldn't find it) it was not on the wiki.

So here is some info I found on the LOTRO forums.

Ranks 1-3 are confirmed:

Rank 1 (automatic) - Kinship chat - Gained upon creation

Rank 2 (1 day old) - Message of the Day - After 24 hours aka 1 day

Rank 3 (3 days old) - Kinship Titles - 2 more days later

Ranks 4 - 7 are speculation:

Rank 4 (1 week old) - Officer chat

Rank 5 (1 month old) - Kinship Mail

Rank 6 (3 months old) - Kinship Auctions

Rank 7 (1 year old) – ???

No Idea how to add page for it, so i'll leave it to you experts, :)

  • bows with much respect*

Lord Kismet

I'm not sure there is a Rank 7 - on previous ranks it's shown as Rank 5 Next rank 6, now we have Rank 6 Next Rank (blank). Of course that may have changed in the patches we Eu don't have yet... but I think they are bug fixes rather than changes. And rank 6 is a lot less than 3 months. DancesInTrees 01:35, 6 April 2007 (PDT)

I have added a Kinship page with information on Kinship Types and Ranks. Patience just posted the official list of ranks on the official forums here good timing! :D I need someone else to add in the kinship titles though the only ones I know are from Mixed Kinships. --Hamma 13:34, 6 April 2007 (PDT)

Great was just about to come over and post it! Nice work! :)

Added "New Page List"

I've added the new pages list to the Main Page, Quests and Items. What do you think --Hinney 00:57, 11 April 2007 (PDT)

Is that the "recent pages" at the bottom? If so, 5 pages is not much at the moment - we are adding pages so fast that the most recent 5 is a small percentage of what's new. But a cool feature even so!--Nemmerle 06:03, 11 April 2007 (PDT)

Patches

Should we have a link to the patch notes from here too? DancesInTrees 15:54, 13 April 2007 (EDT)

Skeeve was talking about revamping the main page to include a news section, that would provide the patch notes or links to it. I've added it to the main page for now. --Hinney 22:08, 13 April 2007 (EDT)

I think it's time to rename Accomplishments to Deeds...

I haven't noticed any usage of Accomplishments since closed beta. --Hinney 22:07, 13 April 2007 (EDT)

What needs to be done to make this change happen? Banaticus 19:46, 26 April 2007 (PDT)

What about a french version ?

I would like to start a french version of lotro-wiki, would it be possible to have a lotro-wiki.com/fr ? We could translate from english version and even have french contributors. This site could become the only one true portal for all about lotro ^^ Can an admin contact me or tell me what is possible to do ? Lpn- 00:16, 19 April 2007 (PDT)

I will set up multiple wikis using interwiki links in the near future. i.e fr.lotro-wiki.com and en.lotro-wiki.com with interwiki links (yuripup was asking about this too but for another reason). --Lotroadmin 23:57, 19 April 2007 (PDT)

Move to easier to find name

I was really intereted in a Lord of the Rings Online wiki. I came to wikia, searched and found https://lotro.wikia.com -- I noticed that it appeared to be empty. So I sat around today making a load of crap stub pages just to get started. Then I found out about this site. This site is simply incredible. But how do people feel about moving this site to an easier to find site, one that apparently comes up higher in the Wikia search, moving it over to that shorter hyperlink which would also be easier to type in game to advertise our presence? I'm just fine with deleting everything that I've put up over, this is far and beyond anything that I've done so far. Since I'm apparently the only one that's ever contributed to the other wiki site, I don't think there will be any problems with it being replaced by this one. Banaticus 13:26, 20 April 2007 (PDT)

what search engine do you use? For the search term "lotro wiki" this site is the highest ranking site on google and live, ranked 6 on yahoo (which i think is either pay by rank or gamers don't yahoo), don't even ask about ask.com. It's listed on the lotro.com fansite list and in posts on the forums-old.lotro.com --Lotroadmin 13:50, 20 April 2007 (PDT)

Templates in general/News template

I've created a news template based on the one wikipedia uses. I am suggesting it's inclusion on the main page. I will also begin working on other templates to be used on the main (and other popular pages) to start to get this site into a manageable state for the game going live. If the game is as big as most people think this place is going to get hard to manage quickly.... Template:In_the_news

I always forget to sign :P Nish 14:41, 20 April 2007 (PDT)

Very nice idea Nish! Can you copy the Main Page to Main Page/news test and give us a demo? Do we need to queue up site news for this to work? or is it random? --Hinney 14:46, 20 April 2007 (PDT)
gimme a link and i'll put it in Nish 14:50, 20 April 2007 (PDT)
Guess I thought it was an ongoing development page, but if it's new i'll just edit it in here :) main news test Nish 15:08, 20 April 2007 (PDT)
