We are finally at the point at which we are ready to announce the opening of the new Datacenter with all new hardware! It has been a long road as we purchased and set up new hardware with updated operating systems, transferred all the data from the old worlds to the new and had to correct systems that had trouble with the transition for 32bit to 64 bit processing. But all of that is past us now and we are pleased to announce that on January 11th, 2016 we will come down for a maintenance window at 5am EST and come back up around 3PM in our new home!

Hey just a quick question, there are 10 uncategorised 'deed' pages listed on this page: Special:UncategorizedCategories, should they be categorised into various subcategories of Category:Deeds and is there a reason they are empty? like legacy/obsolete deeds or something --> Category:Obsolete Deeds

Thanks --Ketrez (talk) 10:04, 28 March 2016 (UTC)
Just a quick look implies that they are new Meta Deeds, which the page creator forgot to add to a category - nominally the regon they are associated with.
Hmmmm ... just looked at theose categories in more detail. It seeems that they are now all empty, having been emptied back in October/November 2015. I guessing that the intention was to have them deleted, but they did not get flagged. I'll go ahead and delete them. They can always be added back in later.
Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 17:22, 29 March 2016 (UTC)
Well I guess that sorts that issue, I thought it odd that they were empty, but suspected that they should have been deleted. Thanks for the update --Ketrez (talk) 18:33, 29 March 2016 (UTC)

Update 18 announced for April 11 release.

(Video begins at about 9:15 in)
Today (Thursday 31 March) on his weekly stream, Frelorn announced Update 18 is to release on April 11th. The update will include the Battle at Pelennor Fields instances and story, the Far Anórien region, a level cap increase and a variety of improvements to the game.
Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 16:51, 1 April 2016 (UTC)
Unclear is there will be another BR update. The Patch server is not up (but then neither are the Forums). Frelorn indicated that there would be one on Friday. But as of 1PM EDT it is not up (neither the patch server nor Bullroarer itself).
Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 16:56, 1 April 2016 (UTC)
Looks like Tybur got the BR server up and released the latest Update 18 Beta #3 notes for this weekend in this post. Moonraker - Toodlepip (talk) 19:25, 3 April 2016 (UTC)

Spam Filter

Hey, (sorry block of text)
I thought I should share this here, A user was trying to add their URL to the Social:Kinships of Imladris page, but couldn't due to the filter pinging.
The word FB (social media site) sets it off, no real worries there and I can under stand why it would be on the list.
This is the only issue I have had with the filter (as of yet) and the only take away issue I have is:
  • the filter still pings you for spamming even if the page already contained the filtered word (i.e. you didn't write it).
after shortening the word (temporarily) to FB the page seems to be able to be edited again.
  • I also noted that the filter also pings if the word appears in the summary comment
These are however a n=1 observation, so please tell me if I'm simply being foolish :)
I'd also like to just politely query why use the generic term/word and not a more specific like FB.com (apart from more hits/false positives)?
As that would prevent the use of the link for a direct link - however using a url shortener does get around this
While on this subject if it's not an issue, could we (please :)) get a official black list google doc (or similar) with all the words/combos?
--Ketrez (talk) 11:15, 20 April 2016 (UTC)
Ah! So that was the thing! I tried to edit something there but I gave up. I worked around it by editing just the section that I wanted, which didn't have any mention of the forbidden word.
Mogafi (talk) 23:05, 20 April 2016 (UTC)

To check

I have in my bags the item Item:Bracelet of Willful Defiance. I didn't check it at the time but I'm almost sure it came from the quest Book 3: Chapter 8: Gothmog Appears but the rewards listed there are slightly different:  Bracelet of Wilful Defiance. It's just the name and the icon that is different.

If anyone has knowledge about it, let me know.

Mogafi (talk) 15:56, 23 April 2016 (UTC)

Not seeing changes

Hey y'all. I've been doing a lot of work cleaning up the Titles category pages and trees. However, I'm not seeing any of my changes unless I'm logged in. Any idea why?

Thanks! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mumra17 (Contribs • User Talk) at 29 April 2016.

Reputation as a reward and the name of the faction

I have noticed in the latest factions that the faction listed in the reward of deeds and quests has the suffix " (Faction)". Example, Quest:Food for the Riders lists

I think this is wrong; the " (Faction" shouldn't be shown. And others also think/thought the same way. Historically the "(Faction)" was hidden by code in {{Quest Rep}}, for example, " | Thorin's Hall = {{{1}}} (Reputation) | {{{1}}}" So... Should I go ahead and change things? And if so

  1. Should the template point to "Riders of Rohan (Faction)" as it is now?
    1. Should I put code in the template so that "Riders of Rohan (Faction)" and "Riders of Rohan" both give the same, avoiding the need to edit a huge amount of articles.
    2. Should all calls to the template from now on require "Riders of Rohan" so all current articles with "Riders of Rohan (Faction)" need to be changed.
  2. Should the template point to "Riders of Rohan (Reputation)" as it was done historically for Thorin's Hall and the likes?
    1. With a redirect from "Riders of Rohan (Reputation)" to "Riders of Rohan (Faction)" so not to edit a huge amount of articles.
    2. Move "Riders of Rohan (Faction)" to "Riders of Rohan (Reputation)" with a redirect created.
      1. Change all articles pointing to "Riders of Rohan (Faction)" to point to "Riders of Rohan (Reputation)"

There are 41 factions but my guess is that only 1 or 2 needs changing.

I prefer solution 1.1 or maybe 1.2. I can do all the work.

Other thoughts?...

Mogafi (talk) 14:10, 12 May 2016 (UTC)

I accidentally deleted your entry, but it is restored now.
That said, I also would prefer solution 1.1. --Tharondir (talk) 15:41, 12 May 2016 (UTC)
Changes done.
Mogafi (talk) 12:35, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
I just noticed that the template "Quest Rep" uses the flag "doc=1" instead of "nocat=y" to prevent an item from being categorized. I guess that means that the template needs to be modified to support both, as "nocat=y" is the convention on the Wiki.

18.2 launch - 28 June

Frelorn announced today (23 June) during his weekly Twitch stream that the target launch date for U18.2 (and the raid) will be June 28th.

Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 02:19, 24 June 2016 (UTC)
Whoa, that's really soon! Thanks for the update! --Ravanel (talk) 08:41, 24 June 2016 (UTC)
I think it's coming too early. The new raid (Throne of the Dread Terror) is still bugged, would have liked at least one more bullroarer build. --Tharondir (talk) 09:17, 24 June 2016 (UTC)
I tend to agree. I haven't played the Raid, but other features (namely the Collections screens) are not working, and in fact have been pulled from Build 3 now on Bullroarer. The Dev Diary did come out today, but the discussions on the Bullroarer Forums about the Raid Locks have been interesting. The Dev Diary does explain what was implemented, but the Raid Locks seems to have really upset the WoW players!
Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 23:38, 24 June 2016 (UTC)
The release of u18.2 has been delayed, no new date has been given. To be honest, I'm relieved. I hope they take their time polishing the new raid. I can wait for a couple more weeks. --Tharondir (talk) 05:41, 28 June 2016 (UTC)
Agreed. We don't need another Tower of Orthanc with bosses that are literally unbeatable at launch. --Ravanel (talk) 11:01, 28 June 2016 (UTC)

Task Item Levels

I have noticed that the task items do not have levels indicated on the image or in any of the lists. Instead of the level I see the word 'trophy'. I am working on a list of getting all of the task item's levels. How can I enter that info into the task item image without messing up things. It seems that the word 'trophy' is important, but I'm not sure why. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Micokeman (Contribs • User Talk).

When I mouse over Item:Punctured Shield I see the level (73) and below it there is the word 'trophy'.
Personally, I don't find that information of much use; I prefer to use Tasks Bulletin Board. Maybe I didn't understand your question.
Mogafi (talk) 02:54, 28 June 2016 (UTC)
The item Item:Punctured Shield does show the level, but the item Item:Bent Claw does not. Now that I have an example of one the is edited correctly, I can correct the rest.
The reason I found it to be useful is that I am attempting to build a task item list based on the level item number. Upon acquiring loot throughout the game, it's nice to know what really is vendor trash as opposed to task loot. The inventory and vault sort items by item level value THEN alphabetically. I am attempting to get a vault dedicated to one of each task item so that, using the alt inventory plugin, i can quickly see if the item is for tasks or can be sold. Yes, I can look it up on paper or on a website, but it's nice to have it in-game as well. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Micokeman (Contribs • User Talk).
Ah, I see what you mean; I think that's a problem we all have had while playing the game - the game marks everything as task item. I've also edited many articles here to put the level of the item.
I'm not sure about the effectiveness of how you are going to solve the problem but good luck.
Mogafi (talk) 10:53, 29 June 2016 (UTC)
Item levels were only added to items recently - Helm's Deep expansion maybe, I don't recall. Consequently older items on the Wiki do not have the Item Level information until someone comes along and updates them. Or, put another way, Turbine has always used them internally, but they were not exposed to Players in ToolTips until then, and consequently the WIKI could not find the information to include it.

Layoffs at Turbine - July 7, 2016

For those who have not heard about it Dadi summerizes it well:

According to Dadi . . .

Unfortunate news surfaced today that Warner Brothers (Turbine) has laid off more employees, including those from LOTRO. It appears that Frelorn has fallen victim to the most recent cuts (“Time for a new adventure!” Tweet seems to confirm this).
No official news has been released by Warner Brothers but former CM, Sapience (Rick Heaton), expressed his condolences today via Twitter and Frelorn’s Thursday Stream was cancelled via an announcement from an @LOTRO handle.
Our condolences to those that have lost their jobs.
Not good news for LOTRO fans …
UPDATE: Official statement from WB: “Turbine is transitioning into a free-to-play, mobile development studio, and as a result we are eliminating some positions. The Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons and Dragons online games will continue to operate as they do now. Re-focusing and reducing the studio size was a difficult decision for the company, and we are grateful to all of the Turbine staff for their considerable contributions.”

This story has been picked up by the Boston Globe as well as various other media outlets.

Bulk Recipes for the Farmer

Considering the number of items being crafted by Farmers can end up being easily in the hundreds, is there any chance that the Bulk Recipes can be extended to them? It's very tedious when collecting and then grading the things you've made - not to mention high maintenance on your tools! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by ‎Ssirienna (Contribs • User Talk) at 23:41, 17 August 2016.

Farming can be a bit tedious indeed. I usually resort to doing the dishes while at it! As for your question: LOTRO-wiki is 100% run by volunteers - players like yourself - and doesn't have any official ties to Turbine. I'd advice posting your suggestion on the official forum instead. :) --Ravanel (talk) 07:58, 18 August 2016 (UTC)

Update 19

Update 19 is up on Bullroarer as of 23 September. The March of the King
I have begun collecting notes at: User:Magill/Sandbox-U19- to do
The first thing I have noticed is that all of the maps are in a new category: Mordor - implied to be an expansion.
Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 18:59, 24 September 2016 (UTC)
It appears that it is time to add the 4th Land of Middle-earth to the Wiki - Mordor!
While it has been hinted that there will be another expansion coming, in ?2017?, by definition, Ithilian is in Mordor, i.e. it is East of the Anduin.
I suspect we will get more concrete indication of this as Build 2 of Update 19 rolls out this week.
All of the maps relating to Update 19 are located in the drop-down "Mordor"!

How can I rename a page?

Strength of Diversity -- Small Fellowship and Strength of Diversity -- Fellowship have wrong titles and should be renamed into Strength in Diversity -- Small Fellowship and Strength in Diversity -- Fellowship. I haven't found any information on renaming/moving a page. How can I do it? --Phindecano (talk) 10:49, 30 September 2016 (UTC)

Up at the top of the page near the edit button, there should be an arrow with more option. See this for example. Amphoras (talkTalk to me!) 21:56, 30 September 2016 (UTC)
The only option I have there is "Purge". Probably non-admin Users don't have these rights? Could you fix it in the way I described above ("in diversity" instead of "of diversity") please? --Phindecano (talk) 09:56, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
Sorry, looks like you need to be ninja or higher to move pages, thought everyone could. I've moved them to the new names. Amphoras (talkTalk to me!) 15:19, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
Thank you! :) --Phindecano (talk) 16:13, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
Well here is a conundrum, what if during a crafting revamp, the name of recipe A got changed to B, AND Recipe C got changed to A. I can envision all sorts of things breaking if I try to fix it. I think it happened a couple years ago that T7 Weaponsmith recipes "Calenard Serrated Knife Recipe" (makes a L65 item) got changed to "Westfold Serrated Knife Recipe"; and "Superior Calenard Serrated Knife Recipe" got changed to "Calenard Serrated Knife Recipe" (makes a L70 item). --Thorwynn (talk) 23:30, 5 November 2016 (UTC)
All you can do is look at "What Links Here" and change the links appropriately.
Note that with Crafting stuff especailly, there are A LOT Of templates, and other inclusion type referencs which make those changes difficult to see and to change.
I find that simply using "Purge" does not force the necessary updates all the time. You frequently need to do a "null edit" - edit the page and then simply save it without making changes. This will force the Wiki Engine to do the update, which otherwise it will ignor.
The process is tedious, but it can be done.

Update 19 Release date

Cordovan posted today (Tuesday 11 October):
"If everything goes well this week, it could be out sometime next week."
Historically, that would imply a Tuesday (18th) or Wednesday (19th) release.
It also implies no Build 4.

Naming conventions for most recent Epic Quest book(s)

I've noticed that the naming of Quests in the most recent Book/Chapter(s) of the Epic Quest line is out of kilter with previous names. For example, I see that in Volume IV, Book 3, the quests are named as "Book 3: Chapter ##: Name of quest" whereas in Book 7 it's "Book 7, Chapter ##: Name of quest". For the avoidance of doubt, the first colon in the Book 3 names is replaced with a comma in the Book 7 quests, and it would seem that this is so for for Books 4–6 also. Does somebody need to sweep through and fix a bunch of names? Which way is actually "correct"? —NotACat (talk) 13:18, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

If you look at the category page: Category:Epic Quests, you will see that the change happened with Book 4 (the switch from ":" to ","). I would assume that reflects a change in staffing at Turbine as it seems pretty consistant, and generally folks copy what is found in game pretty accurately. And that is our basic guideline -- "as it appears in the game." So, since things appear consistant, I wouldn't worry about it.

Yule festival and update 19.2 delayed to Monday, December 19th.

Posted by Cordovan:

https://www.lotro.com/forums/showthread.php?&postid=7675527#post7675527

Yule Festival Next Week

We've had to make a fairly tough decision to shift the start time for the Yule Festival to Monday, December 19th starting around 10:00 AM Eastern (-5 GMT) instead of tomorrow. We have new items available in this year's Yule Festival, but those items need to be added in a game update, and our plan to release Update 19.2 tomorrow has had to be delayed. So, instead of opening the Yule Fest with only older items and adding in the new items later, we're shifting the start time to Monday and running the event through January 16th (to preserve the three weekend time frame).
We know many of you are looking forward to the Yule Festival, and we apologize for not being able to start it tomorrow.
Community Manager, Lord of the Rings Online
  • The only problem with Cordovan's announcement is the 10am Monday time -- IF they are actually going to release 19.2.
Unless they have changed internal processes, (and no down-time has been announced for Monday as yet), update downtime usually runs 4 hours 7am to 11am.
