Welcome to the Archive of the Talk Page of Contributors' Corner for 2010

Minutes on last meeting?

Hi, I couldn't be there yesterday around the planned hour, any minutes on what was discussed? I wish there was an 8th day / week to dedicate to updates & sleep! :) I'm currently planning to continue updating recipes & related items, along with some item wikifying of screen captures I'm retaking while leveling my newer toons (and putting the item in the corresponding item index) -- Goingbald 17:38, 14 February 2010 (UTC)

Good to hear from you! I thought I should've posted on your talk inviting you to join us there, but it seems like you couldn't make it anyways. Concerning the meeting minutes, I'm working on that at the moment, lots of logs to summarize. Will post them when ready, in a few hours at most. :) --Fedaykin 17:45, 14 February 2010 (UTC)

Image uploading "virus" problems

I've been experiencing problems with uploading images. Basically there are times when an error message tells there is a virus in the image, while there obviously is not. The file is not uploaded then. Sometimes it helps trying to upload it like 10 times and one time it will succeed, but there are times it just doesn't want to cooperate for minutes. This is the error message (in red):

Uploadwaarschuwing
Het bestand bevat een virus! Details: scannen is mislukt (code 50)

Which means, translated into english (thought people would like that):

Uploadwarning
The file contains a virus! Details: scanning failed (code 50)

Now I heard others experience this problem sometimes too. Would be cool if anyone would know a solution. --Ravanel 23:57, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

This problem still occurs. It's now this bad that I've not been able to upload any images for the past 5 days. Also, my last uploads at 15 apr 2010 were the last pictures uploaded over the whole wiki. So I wonder if anyone is able to upload pictures at all. --Ravanel 10:49, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

A recent change to clamAV (linux virus scanner) failed all uploads. I've updated this and I was able to load a pnp, and a large jpg file just now. --Lotroadmin 02:51, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Woohoo! Many thanks! I had no idea why it was continuously refusing any image update or how to search for an answer. :) -- Goingbald 02:59, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Thank you, that sounds great! I'm going to try uploading my images right away. --Ravanel 08:32, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Webhost migration May 6th

The current webhost will be migrating to a new facility on May 6th and because of this I will ask you to hold off on any major edits until I have confirmation the migration has been performed. Thanks --Lotroadmin 03:02, 6 May 2010 (UTC)

All seems well since the migration. Please report any issues --Lotroadmin 00:06, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
Webhost had an unplanned maintenance to resolve server issues since the migration. I apologies for any inconveniences. Please let me know if you experience any issues --Lotroadmin 07:10, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
There have been many issues this week with the webhost. I'm now looking to move the site elsewhere, I apologize for any past and future inconveniences, the webhost has caused. --Lotroadmin 00:20, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
So it's been several days and I haven't noticed any issues with the webhost. Please let me know if you have any difficulties --Lotroadmin 05:04, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

Wiki copying

Saw this in chat - blatant copying - he even sounded proud of it :/ He's going to 'build on it' whatever that means.
_https://lotro.grams-it.com/index.php/Main_Page DancesInTrees 17:47, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

There's not much I can do about blatant coping, ideally he needs to provide credit to this site and provide a link to the GNU FDL Free DOC License on every page he copied..(link is at the lower right of this site). There are a few translating websites that do essentially do the same thing but I think that is fine. I do from time to time block denial-of-service attacks, which i think a few of them have been folks trying to duplicate the site as a PDF, which is again fine for those that want to do offline reading, just don't try read all links at once :). Curious what the motives were behind creating a new wiki vs building on this one... did we scare him/her off or is perhaps after ad revenue... --Lotroadmin 00:21, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
I've spent a little time looking at the site today and not only is he blatantly copying our pages/information/templates (which is not technically wrong) HE is also dissing us in general by stating that our information is old and we don't update our site and we suck... blah blah... which is not cool. A lot of people contribute here and are proud of their additions/templates and for this guy to use them under the premise that we no longer monitor our site or care is tactless and blatantly rude. I have no idea what we can do about it, if anything, but something should be done. At least have him give credit where credit is due and not insult our community as a whole. If anything our class section does need a bit of updating, I'll admit and should be updated and reformatted to make it our own again. Not sure how to stop him from stealing that as well but again, respect the people who created it at the very least. Something needs to be done. Rogue 19:59, 2 August 2010 (EDT)
Interesting aspect here is that the GNU FDL allows us to copy the text back as long as we credit the original author, which is the first person to make the post here. Since he's blatantly coping our text, images and scripts he's probably coping the text from other sites as well, so it's probably best to search on the text before coping them back as I don't really want to copy a website that created their own stuff. If someone does copy the text, please go a step further than the FDL and give him credit in the "summary" section when posting it.
Seems that he blocked Rogue from making any additional post and removed her comments. Ideally if he's going to change most of the text it would seem better for him not to follow our layout, images, etc or give us credit. He should make it 100% his site and in fact we would even gladly link his site in the guide section. I have a few idea's why he is doing what he is doing, which I won't repeat as I don't want to encourage the behavior.
If other fansites have experienced this issue, I would be interesting to here their opinions on this matter.

Check this out _https://lotro.grams-it.com/index.php/Champion and lotroinfo So not only is he violating the GNU FDL for our layout, text, scripts and images, he's also violating lotroinfo's site license as well and it's not CC or GNU FDL. --Lotroadmin 02:00, 4 August 2010 (EDT)

Upgraded to MediaWiki 1.16

Those who haven't saved their skins will notice a new look from the upgrade. If you did save your skin switch to the new vector skin.

If you notice any issue please let me know here or on the forums --Lotroadmin 17:02, 1 August 2010 (EDT)

  • I am missing the option to move files? - Which is a must for me! Also cannot find the Watch page button. Rogue 13:04, 3 August 2010 (EDT)

Grumbles at her lack of observation.. thanks! Rogue 13:51, 3 August 2010 (EDT)
I've changed the preferences to use MonoBook, so same previous look :) --Goingbald 23:28, 3 August 2010 (EDT)
  • The 'history table' displaying images has very big headers for me, just strange. :) --Goingbald 19:11, 3 August 2010 (EDT)
Seems like some of the CSS stuff is lost with the MW1.16 release.. i attempted a quick hack last weekend but will try to clean it up this weekend. --Lotroadmin 20:25, 3 August 2010 (EDT)
  • Rogue left me a note on my talk page but I've not been warned with that previous 'orange line' at the top of the screen, I've seen it checking the 'Recent changes' page... --Goingbald 20:32, 25 August 2010 (EDT)
    • Huh, I saw it with my account when you left me a message on my talk page. Not sure why you cannot see it but I can. Rogue 01:46, 26 August 2010 (EDT)

Forums

I seem not to be able to post at the forum, because Clickcha is not working. Not sure if this is only a temporarily problem or if there is something else going on. --Ravanel 06:18, 9 August 2010 (EDT)

Thanks for the heads up.. It's strange, not sure what is up with Clickha, but I switched to another CAPTCHA plugin for now. It seems to work for me, so give it a shot. It's funny how many spam accounts that forum gets with CAPTCHA, I don't want to how many more it would get without it. --Lotroadmin 01:00, 10 August 2010 (EDT)
I'm able to post at the forums again now, thank you. I hope the problems with spam will get less. --Ravanel 06:25, 10 August 2010 (EDT)

Protection from Editing

It has come to my attention that the average editors are trying to edit / change our preload template pages. The Create new pages and their corresponding template pages (like preloads) should not be touched except by administrators. Why? Because to the average/normal editor it should be a matter of using the Create pages and filling in the blanks. The ONLY time such articles should be updated is when new parameters are added to the templates. I have set permissions on all create articles and their templates to administrator only. Rogue 00:40, 20 October 2010 (EDT)

As an "average/normal editor" (what does this mean, exactly?), I'd like to express my objection to this protection as contrary to the wiki spirit of community editing. This amounts to a "we know better" territorial approach that demeans contributors who are enthusiastic to improve usability of the great tools that have already been built here. Sethladan 02:20, 20 October 2010 (EDT)
By average or normal editor I mean no disrespect. Simply put most editors on this wiki should not need to mess with the Create new "insert here" articles. They are in place to make adding articles easier. It was confusing for most before they were put in place. By placing a restriction on the ability to edit them keeps the simplicity intact. Not to say that our community of editors are simple. I am simply saying that we have had issues with certain individuals editing templates and adding information not appropriate to a blank copy of our templates. No one should have to worry about the "preloads" once they are in place. These were meant to be a behind the scenes. There is a "sort of" hierarchy as with anything else. We admins insure that the wiki runs smoothly. Rogue 02:28, 20 October 2010 (EDT)

Adding items to the Wiki

Hello,

I am interested in helping the Wiki. I have done work with Wiki's before, mainly the DDO Wiki, so I have a general idea of what I am doing.(still need to work a bit more though) Since I have returned to LOTRO after bouncing back and forth between LOTRO and DDO, I would like to start contributing. My main question is, Is there anything that the majority of the people do NOT want on the Wiki? I.E. the LOTRO Store.

We did a DDO store, but I will admit, it was a pain to get started, but once it was all there, not so much to maintain. Prices where set at normal prices and noted that they do not reflect any current sale prices. I would love to start this monumental task, but only if everyone thinks there is a need for it. I also want to make sure that no one is currently working on it as well. I'd hate to start this task to only find out that someone else is almost done with it.

What prompted this was I was messing around in the store as I just found out you can't get kindred status with a crafting guild as a premium player, you have to unlock it(ex subsciber here) and I found crafting items(i.e. Sturdy Master Scholar's Glass) that I haven't been able to locate as available in game.(coulda missed it though).

Well, I look forward to helping in any way that I can. If no one else wants to tackle this, but feels it would be a good contribution, let me know, and I'll get started.(I'm a big geek, love doing this kind of stuff :P) --Deadmanet 20:05, 10 November 2010 (EST)

As far as I know a Turbine Store (LOTRO Store) has not been added as a project but we can certainly do that. If you would like to work on this that would be great. Things that people have done are add whether or not things cost points. It can definitely be expanded. Rogue 20:23, 10 November 2010 (EST)
Hi, I've created the LOTRO Store & LOTRO Point pages ~1 month ago, mimicking what I saw on DDO's wiki, hoping that someone would jump on that task eventually, so I'm glad to see your post here today! :) All proposed links are still red, so everything has to be done! Nothing points to the Store yet, but all deeds are almost already referring to the Turbine Point page. I've also created the Category: LOTRO Store with only these 2 pages in for now.
I'm still trying to update recipe indexes with all related items, but lacking time and/or guts, so I won't participate yet in the store. It's also harder to figure what is available from scratch, being a lifetime founder, though I've started a "free" account after creating the pages back then... --Goingbald 20:33, 10 November 2010 (EST)
Looks like I've got some work to do when I'm sitting here doing nothing. Thanks for the links to the started pages, I'll get right on it!

--Deadmanet 20:51, 10 November 2010 (EST)

I just created the Project page for LOTRO Store so feel free to add your ideas and thoughts there as a checklist. That way others who are interested in helping can see your progress and help you along. Check out Template:Ambox as this is what I wanted to start with. I wanted to create a template using that (change color and add heading etc) for the different versions whether F2P or Premium Content etc. We can place those templates underneath headings to pages where appropriate. Rogue 20:54, 10 November 2010 (EST)
Thanks for the project page. Will make this a lot easier. Added some things to it. Did quite a bit on the actual store items as well. Mostly basic formating, etc...Did get all the Quest type items done though. At least for now. Let me know what y'all think. Deadmanet 23:36, 10 November 2010 (EST)
Gonna move this discussion the Project page discussion board, keep this one a little cleaner. :P Deadmanet 02:14, 11 November 2010 (EST)

Mathoms

I am posting this in hopes of obtaining assistance in reference to the Mathoms/Mathom Society. I have found some incorrect information on this site about the mathoms and the level of the mobs that drop them. The level of the mobs is not 35 and up, it 20 and up, more so from elite and/or signature types. Example; I just recently went into the Barrows and enter Haudh Iarchith, while there I was getting mathoms and well-kept mathoms as drops from killing the level 20 or so mobs that are in there. I am hoping that someone that is in cooperation with the support team/moderators will update the information dealing with the mathoms and the Mathom Society. (Posted by Bigbro1001)

Hi there! Thanks for posting about this. If I understand right, Haudh Iarchith used to be a higher level area and all one combined map. After Free2Play came out (which is when I started playing), a lot of the Bree-land and Shire reputation stuff could be done a lot earlier. (The reason that Mathoms and Well-kept Mathoms are listed at higher levels, I guess.)
With that said, the goal of this wiki is for anyone to be able to update and edit! Since you already have an account, you can just click "Edit" at the top of most pages - like you did here - and correct/update things as you like. If you're not comfortable doing that, you can also post (again, like you did here) on the discussion page for anything that seems out-of-date, and someone else will probably see it and make the change. We have a few hard-core editors who do a lot of work, but it's up to everyone to notice and change where they see room for improvement. :) Hope to see you stick around - there's always something to be done!
