The Southern Old Forest is an area within Cardolan in the north-western region.

This is the southernmost region of the Old Forest of the Bree-lands, east of the Baranduin river. The trees are old and broad and the forest floor is choked with roots and fallen wood, and the southern half is cut off from the north by a vast wall of trees.

The southern half of the Old Forest is less maze-like than its northern half, instead being cloaked in a heavy mist and darkness. A river the forms a confluence with the Brandywine also serves as a border with the barrows of Tyrn Gorthad to the south.

In the southern tip are the ruins of Nettinglade, former gardens of Arnor, now a den for spiders.

The entrance to Sarch Vorn, the Black Grave is located in this area, by a narrow pass to a wooden bridge leading from Tyrn Gorthad. [37.7S, 52.3W]
