The War of the Dwarves and Orcs was a 6-year old great conflict between the two races as a result of Azog killing King Thrór in 2790 T.A.. The war itself began three years later in 2793. Following Thrór's death, his son Thráin assembled the Haban'akkâ, the Reckoning-host, and summoned dwarves of all seven houses to avenge Thrór. Much was the war was fought in caves and mines throughout the Misty Mountains and the Vales of Anduin, and the most famous battles are the Sacking of Mount Gundabad and the Battle of Azanulbizar, which ended the war in 2799.

The war ended with the death of Azog, but Moria could not be reclaimed from the Enemy as Durin's Bane still roamed its halls. Many noble dwarves perished in the war, among them Náin, Frerin and Fundin.

This was technically the sixth great war between dwarves and orcs, and is also known as the Sixth War of Dwarves and Orcs.
