Mammoths
- Mammoths are huge, fur-covered beasts with long trunks and sharp ivory tusks. They are found across Middle-earth in frigid regions such as Forochel and The Misty Mountains.
- These majestic creatures are sometimes domesticated and used as pack animals by Mannish tribes such as the Lossoth.
- When mammoths are dying, they often congregate in a designated "graveyard" site where their bones become part of the landscape. One such mammoth graveyard is Norsu-hauta, located near the Icereave Mines.
- Mammoths are presumably related in some way to the Mûmakil (or "Oliphaunts"), the huge beasts of Harad used as living war machines by the Haradrim.
- Mammoths are Elite difficulty and generally non-aggressive although some will threaten then aggro. They are resistant to Cries and Ranged damage.
- Mammoths, an actual prehistoric species, do not appear in the work of J.R.R. Tolkien. The game's version is likely inspired by the Mûmakil of The Lord of the Rings.
Mûmakil (Oliphaunts)
- Mûmakîl (singular: Mûmak) are enormous war-beasts from Harad that have been brought to the War of the Ring at Minas Tirith by the fierce Southrons.
- Mûmakîl often carry siege-towers upon their backs used by Haradrim archers and spearmen, or are used to trample foes on the battlefield.
- The Haradrim had tamed these massive beasts and used them in warfare where, like their masters, they were decorated with scarlet and gold.
- In Hobbit folklore, these creatures are referred to as "Oliphaunts." They were thought to be imaginary until Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee encountered them in Ithilien, implying that hobbit ancestors spotted such animals in their travels long ago.
- The Mûmakîl are native to the southern jungles of Far Harad. However, they are presumably related to the Mammoths of the Misty Mountains and Forochel. Perhaps a shared ancestor of these beasts was once more common throughout Middle-earth.
