The second son of Finwë, first High King of the Noldor, half-brother to Fëanor. Fingolfin was the father of Fingon and Turgon, among others.

In the first age, Fingolfin led the greater part of the Noldor over the bitter ices of Helcaraxë and into Beleriand at the start of the war against Morgoth. Fingolfin eventually confronted Morgoth at the gates of Thangorodrim and challenged him to fight. Proving himself to be among the mightiest elves of the age, Fingolfin inflicted a permanent wound on the foot of Morgoth but eventually was killed in the struggle. His eldest son, Fingon, succeeded him as High King of the Noldor.
