Elwing the White was a half-elven princess, granddaughter of Beren and Lúthien and descendant of the Maia Melian and of the Edain. She was also wife of Eärendil, himself half-elven, and mother of their twin sons Elrond and Elros.

Playing a critical role in the War of Wrath, Elwing survived the fall of Doriath and escaped to the Havens of Sirion, taking with her the Silmaril won by her grandparents. When this place too was assailed, she threw herself into the Belegaer with the Silmaril, taking it out of reach of the sons of Fëanor. Through the powers of the Valar, she took upon herself the form of a great swan, and flew to her husband Eärendil's ship as he sailed west to Valinor, rousing the Valar against Morgoth.

The Valar listened to their words, and formed the Host of Valinor to finally crush the evils of Morgoth in Beleriand. Among the other preparations, Eärendil's ship was blessed with a bright white flame and sent into the skies, bearing the Silmaril. Great was that battle, and terrible its effects, but in the end, Morgoth was cast out of Arda for all time.

For their deeds, and for daring great peril to set foot in Valinor in the first place, Elwing and Eärendil (and their children after them) were granted a Choice: the immortal life of elves or the uncertain Gift of Men. At Eärendil's bidding, Elwing chose for both of them. They were counted among elves; Eärendil sails at the helm of his ship across the night sky, Elwing taking flight as a white bird, welcoming him home with each sunrise.
