Tactical Information

Controlled Burn was originally a combat-only stance. It was later changed to a buff with a set duration of two and a half minutes, but Controlled Burn still behaves a lot like the three regular stances (Ardour, Fervour and Glory). It provides the same in-combat power regeneration and pip generation as Fervour, and close to the same damage bonus (15% compared to Fervour's 20% at level 65). Unlike Fervour, the Champion retains their avoidances, and Controlled Burn does not carry any incoming healing penalty.

Thus is Controlled Burn essentially Fervour without drawbacks, and with the added bonus of Ardent Flurry and Glorious Exchange (which are not only activated upon use, but remain in their upgraded form throughout the duration of the skill). Furthermore, if you are still in combat when Controlled Burn expires, Ardent Flurry and Glorious Exchange will both remain, even if Fervour is toggled on (which under normal circumstances is compatible with neither). This should not be underestimated; the ability to have Ardent Flurry active in Fervour is superb for a DPS role in a long fight. Having no defensive penalties, Controlled Burn is also great for off-tanking, or main-tanking if incoming damage isn't high enough to warrant using Glory.

The only drawback of Controlled Burn is the inability to use the normal version of Flurry while it is active; meaning that if it is used to save yourself in a fight that doesn't last for the full duration of the skill, you will have to rely on defeat responses in order to increase your attack speed until it expires. However, this is a very minor issue compared to the benefits gained (especially if it saves your life). In fact, Controlled Burn is so useful, both for solo and group play, that there is rarely a reason to leave the bard without it.
