Updating the Tool Tips

A lot of the tool tip images are out of date. Not necessarily incorrect, but with a lot of the new information added in game to the tooltips, they don't reflect what is in game very well any more. Like: http://lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Exploit_Opening Cliveklg 10:28, 28 October 2007 (PDT)

Images

Speaking of images, is there some way to have a special page on Things to do for broken image links? Or a tag we can put in on pages where the image needs to be updated? Or would broken image links just fall under the Wanted pages? I'm just currious & think it would be useful. TD 14:01, 13 November 2007 (PST)

I absolutely love this idea mainly because part of my brain is very visual and loves to see what it is or where it is!
For those who want to help perhaps we can have the admins set up something like setting up a tag such as: { {image needed} } (no spaces and would be a template) that could be slapped on a page that needs images. This template adds tagged pages to the Image needed category.
{ {Image needed|(type)} }[edit] parameters 1
Image type; Possible values:
  • image (default) - Adds page to Category:Image needed
  • map - Adds page to Category:Map needed
Note: this is how I have seen it on other wiki's so it's the only example I can give.
Then for those of us who browse wiki a lot and notice pages that could or should have images we can slap those tags on. This would then translate to those people who want to help out by taking screenshots of what images we need or are looking for that would be just another great addition to this wiki! This could be added to a 'Projects' category. I explain that below.  :) Rogue 12:12, 7 February 2008 (PST)

Lore Master overhaul

atm im getting ready for an overhaul of LRM. I have all the new icons ready (though in JPG so im getting them converted to PNG). If anyone wants to help they are more than welcome! --Anarchie 10:46, 28 October 2007 (PDT)

What kind of overhaul are you talking about? My Lore-master is up to 22 level so maybe I could help with something? Rogue 12:12, 7 February 2008 (PST)

Organization of Things to Do

We should set up 'Projects' in Things to Do. As I am new to this wiki I find myself often lost, confused, disappointed, and more importantly wanting to help out. In checking the Things to Do I find myself overwhelmed. There's so much to do and so much that could be done. I believe setting up a projects area would really help. A group could get together and work on sections. For example one project, although large in itself, might be Locations (then broken down further into Regional Locations) and whomever wants to get together as a group could work on those.

Another thought would be to set up templates of what we want sections to look like. Referring to Locations again, an example would be what do we want Locations to say and what do we want to include. Once that base is figured out we can draw up a basic template and then fill in the blanks for each location. Another example would be Classes, Skills, etc of creating a basic 'look' and structure of what we want those areas to look like and include. Formatting can also be decided at this point. Once templates are in place then it's only a matter of exploring, fighting, learning etc. to fill in the blanks.

There's a LOT of information to cover but I think it can be done with the right amount of people and the right amount of time. Little by little, or step by step. I think this site has a lot of potential! We can show them how a LOTRO wiki should be! Rogue 12:12, 7 February 2008 (PST)

I agree, and I can't speak for the other admins but I think the main reason we've never really split things into "Projects" with different people working on different projects (whichever ones they'd like to) is because we really don't, or didn't, have enough active editors here. Take a look at Lotro-Wiki.com:About. The Administrators, four of the editors and one of the contributors have been the main dedicated force behind the Wiki since I've been around in June/July. That's only about 10 people, and you could say a Wiki is only as good as the size and dedication of the community running it. We're dedicated, but the community is small and the sheer amount of content to add is pretty daunting when you look at it.
So, what can we do about it? It's right that you brought the topic up, and as I said above I agree that we should create some "Projects" that people can be a part of. Right now people come to "Things to do" and don't really get much aside from a seemingly endless list of "Broken Links" from all different kinds of pages, so I must say it wouldn't be surprising if we got more editors after setting this up. Each "Project" page could list different "sub-sections" and how completed they are, and that way people could get an idea of what needs the most help. For example, the "World Instances" project would list an overview of the completion percentages of the articles and what needs to be done on each of them. "Locations" would list all the location stubs and give you a general idea of how each Location page would ideally look, so you know what to add. Etc.
Creating the projects will require a lot of discussion and planning, and I'll be adding it to the list of topics for the Chat Meeting, so I'd appreciate if you could join us there on Saturday. Eleazaros has been doing a ton of work on getting Tooltips running, and I think that lots of things are on hold until we've got that all set up and working.
On the topic of a page "layout" for different sections, I think some of that is already in place, but a lot of it is not really documented anywhere. How World Instance articles should look is pretty well defined by World Instances Guideline, which is incomplete and I will spend more time on it until it's not. Some of the other article types could use a Guideline too, which I'd say can be a part of the job of the people running each specific project. --Fedaykin 21:43, 7 February 2008 (PST)

Crafting Project

I have the desire to start this project. Mainly because I enjoy crafting (in most games) and saw that this area was somewhat disorganized and lacking. I also noticed the stubs: Items and most were crafting. I will try to come up with the guts and format of this area, and once I get that done I may need help. For clarification we would like to use the [ [item box] ] format is that correct? Also, we would like to see images of the craft item / crafted item seperate as 32x32pix as a .png file? Rogue 10:16, 12 February 2008 (PST)

I think Speico was working a bit on crafting and came up with some sort of design template, could you take a look at his user page and his last contributions (Special:Contributions/Speico) to see what he was doing and how he was doing it? you could figure out how you proceed between the two of you, and if you need further help with templates or something else feel free to bother one of the admins ;) --Xander 10:36, 12 February 2008 (PST)
Thanks for the hookup! I will definately chat with Speico about my thoughts and ideas! We need to set up a common place (link) for all templates! Easy to find and therefore easy for us to impliment and add to! Rogue 15:29, 12 February 2008 (PST)
Just a notice, I've been working on getting the projects outlined and defined. We should have a portal for the projects that lists them all and a general outline of each one with active members. I don't know when I'll be done, but I'll do my best to get it ready soon. --Fedaykin 17:51, 12 February 2008 (PST)

Long Pages

I'm not sure where to draw the line with long pages but I think we need to focus on pages about 100,00 bytes or more. These pages tend to have several hundred requests on the server which impacts the server load and page view times, which lowers overall performance. I'm not sure what the solution would be but the end goal needs to reduce the number of images loaded for a given page. Sprites (like on the main page) might be a good compromise and not that hard to do with some inline CSS (again main page for example). --Lotroadmin (talk) 21:44, 15 January 2012 (EST)

Projects

I think we should add links to projects in this page, after all they're more detailed to-do pages. Although after seeing some, I believe this doesn't cover smaller things, like, some type of item renaming or an specific thing that got outdated and such, where should we add these things? Gwenwyfar (talk) 04:40, 23 October 2012 (EDT)

Yes, that is a better approach. But first off, clean out all old rubbish from this page so it is easy to find what there really is to do.
Projects: I envision we create a Something/Project-1 page where something could be e.g. Template:Deed. A project should not linger forever. Anything can start at the talk page, but when it moves on to a "project" we could use such as page. Otherwise we risk that links from this page references something that is just too hard to find in a long talk-page. Or am I just over-complicating things?
-- Zimoon (talk) 05:01, 23 October 2012 (EDT)
I had something like a simple list in mind, and if needed, with a second page full of sections for more detailed info. For instance, taking on something recent, all the journals needing to be renamed, I mentioned that in the talk page, but not everyone is gonna see it, and even if everyone does, its bound to be forgotten, and not really accessible as a "to-do" list would be. So if we were to make a list for these things, I would probably just leave it as something like "Rename all journals and their recipes" in the list, and then add a link to that for another page, in its own section, which gives more details on what needs to be done. This way, we could have a single long list on all things around the wiki that need getting done, and another page with the details where needed.
About cleaning this page, it could probably go into another page after being simplified, linked from here, under something like "site maintenance", which is all this is about really. (If we make this an actual to-do list, that is)
Gwenwyfar (talk) 07:08, 23 October 2012 (EDT)
Obviously I over-complicated it ;) -- Zimoon (talk) 09:25, 23 October 2012 (EDT)

Skill page

First let me thank you for the best game wiki I have ever seen :) Not that I know all of them (perhaps a dozen), but here i am impressed by the sheer amount of data, the accuracy, the mostly precise wording and the userfriendly + beautiful design. That said: the Skills page seems to be in heavy disorder, duplicating a lot of text (see 1.6.1 and 1.7). As I am new here, I do not want to interfere, but perhaps some of you experts would like to do the repair job? --Dathor (talk) 13:50, 2 September 2013 (EDT)

Thanks for your interest... With the end of the Lorebook, LOTOR-wiki.com is pretty much the only game in town!
As for Skills you are right! Yuck!!! it is a mass of transcluded pieces... which need to be straightened out. And as it turns out, not a simple task.
  • I think that is straightened out now...
  • And to make matters worse... I don't believe it is correct after recent revisions... sigh... have to read release notes to figure out...
Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 09:27, 3 September 2013 (EDT)
As I'm reviewing this, I note that there have been significant changes in recent updates, which have not been captured on the Wiki.
See in particular:
for example, there is no longer such a skill as "Accuracy" or "Hit Chance" -- both are terms from "other" game environments.
Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 11:14, 3 September 2013 (EDT)

It is fine now - "straightened out", as you said. This helps a lot. The details... ok, I think I am not enough mathematician to contribute there. But perhaps sometimes on other pages. I have two lv 17-chars and will change to VIP the next days and I think I will play this game some months, it fascinates me (oh, the music of Bree, and the landscape of elfish territory :). Referring to "terms from other games": the problem is, that most of the gamers are habituated to Stat-systems like Dungeons & Dragons, so "translating" would be helpful. Its ok to implement a totally new stat-system, but this increases the necessity to explain. --Dathor (talk) 15:00, 5 September 2013 (EDT)

I tried to access the Yule Festival pages for the items available & their tokens costs..seems the same items & same costs were on all 3 years, 2014, 2015 & 2016. I am sure that the items were not all the same, especially the new ones. There have always been a few new things added, & I am confused now..help??

Thanks a lot for any help I can get!!  :)

P.S. If this is not the right place to post this, I am sorry..I am new to this!!

Global Updates of terms that have changed

Great wiki. Thanks to all those who set it up - it's been a constant source of joy when playing the game throughout the past 12 years. And it's still being updated so many more thanks! I've too little experience of wiki-ing to do much more than minor edits where I come across the need. There is one job that I might have started on - at least for one page - but then realised the changes are needed on MANY pages so starting might just confuse the issue. So my question is "Is there a wiki engine that can scour the entire wiki for a term and edit them all?" I came across this wondering if I would make a start editing "Turbine Points" and "TP" to "LOTRO Points" and "LP". Then I thought that there MUST be a wiki way of doing this. Anyone have some information on that? I see that editors have put in the comment that Turbine Points are now LOTRO Points, but then the pages continue with repeated reference to Turbine Points. Fine for us long-time players, but any new player may wonder whether the wiki is being kept up to date now that SSG has been in charge for so long. Thanks for any advice on global updating using some sort of wiki mechanism. Fatefoot

short answer: there is a search-and-replace method that administrators can use to make such changes on multiple pages at once when necessary. feel free to contact them on Discord to make suggestions.
thanks Taz for the recommendation - I'll do that.--Fatefoot
long answer: thanks for your enthusiasm, but in this case you've got it backwards. that change has already been made: "Turbine Points" is the old name (dating back to when the store was introduced by Turbine); "LOTRO Points" is the current name (changed when SSG acquired the game). --Taz (talk) 11:53, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
apologies - no idea how I messed up the detail after writing it correctly in the first sentence - I've corrected it. (I usually take more care before going public, but failed on a discussion page. Lessons learnt - (1) ALL submissions require the same level of care (2) enthusiasm is no substitute for accuracy)--Fatefoot (talk) 05:26, 3 May 2019 (UTC)
