Caras Gelebren is an area within Swanfleet in the north-eastern region.

Caras Gelebren, the Silver Bastion (lit. Sindarin, 'Silver City'), was once the citadel of Celebrimbor, lord of the Gwaith-i-Mírdain of Eregion and crafter of the Rings of Power. The ruins of the old city sit above the Glanduin where it flows into the Wadewater. The House of the Mírdain stood atop the hill in the Second Age, before the War of the Elves and Sauron. The camp of Echad Terthas watches over the ruins, now crawling with Uruk-hai, Orcish, and Dunlending warriors under Saruman's command.

The city's fall is shown in the Doom of Caras Gelebren.

Lore

Only a short distance from the great ring-forges of Tham Mírdain, the Hall of the Jewel-smiths, Celebrimbor built the city of Caras Gelebren. It was home to many of the Gwaith-i-Mírdain and was a place of craft and learning through the early Second Age. The elven realm of Eregion was protected by The Bright Company, then under the leadership of Celeborn, and had the friendship of the Men of Númenor and the dwarves of Khazad-dûm.

Around 1200 of the Second Age, Antheron came to Eregion (having been turned away by Gil-galad in Lindon) and offered his aid to Celebrimbor and his people. With his help, the Mírdain grew in skill and knowledge, and around 1500 they began the forging of the Rings of Power. Some were kept by their makers, but some were given to powerful Men and dwarves- a set of nine and a set of seven, respectively. Antheron departed Eregion soon after, and in his absence Celebrimbor crafted the Three Rings of the elves. Antheron returned to Mordor, where he cast aside his disguise and as the Dark Lord Sauron forged the Ruling Ring in the heart of Orodruin. The Mírdain were made aware of Sauron's intentions the moment he put on the One Ring. Most removed their own rings, and others were made to give theirs up.

Sauron marched on Eregion with the might of his gathered armies and demanded the Rings. The Three were long since sent away, and Sauron laid waste to Eregion in the War of the Elves and Sauron. Celebrimbor was defeated and captured in 1697 in Caras Gelebren, before the House of the Mírdain. What survivors there were fled north.

"The great Elf-smith Celebrimbor built the city where he would fashion his legacy at the junction of the rivers Sirannon and Glanduin. Caras Gelebren, the Silver Bastion, was a place of beauty and learning for much of the Second Age, but it was not to last. Hidden beneath a fair guise, evil came to Caras Gelebren, and Celebrimbor was deceived. Ensnared by his pride and his lust for secret knowledge, the Elf-smith nearly broke the world.
When Sauron brought war to Eregion in the aftermath of Celebrimbor's folly, the citadel was destroyed and all memory of its peaceful days forgotten. There would be triumph in the years that followed, but beneath it all the Elves remember the foundation of shame on which it was built, and they mourn." — Deed
