Hello Thadius856,

I'm curious why you are removing the wiki keywords: "{{PAGENAME}} and {{PAGENAMEE}}" from the pages that use templates? Was there a situation where the wiki keyword didn't work? To me the only advantage of the wiki keyword was simplicity of fixing a misspelled word. --Lotroadmin 16:47, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

First, let me assure you that I'm not removing them. I'm substituting them with subst:. The substitution will not show in histories.
Second, most of the usage of {{PAGENAME}} or {{PAGENAMEE}} I've seen on this site is with linking images in infoboxes or filling the name= parameter. However, the page move which I assume you're referring to can cause unwanted outcomes. Under these circumstances, we must consider two scenarios:
  1. {{PAGENAME}} or {{PAGENAMEE}} has not been substituted, and the image no longer displays. An observant editor must than notice the broken image and either replace the magicword with a hard link or ask an administator to move the image to the new name. In this case, many viewers may be exposed to the article before the problem is remedied.
  2. {{PAGENAME}} or {{PAGENAMEE}} has been substituted, and the image continues to display. If the image name is mispelled as well, it may need to be moved by an admin and the name updated manually in the infobox, but viewers will not have seen any difference.
Third, substitution of magicwords in article bodies is beneficial for several reasons, including:
  • Newer editors may become confused with {{PAGENAME}} and experience difficulties understanding the page they're editing
  • Making rendering of articles easier and thus faster for the server (as the substitution is completed upon the first save, and not queried each page view)
  • Allowing a rendered page to be made independant of the template used (e.g., if {{PAGENAME}} were changed in the future, it might break quite a few pages)
Despite the points I've outlined, if your wishes were to halt substition of that specifc magicword, I would refrain from doing do in the future. Thadius856 01:13, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
It's all good, was curious of the reasons... (Other than a few hardware related webhost issues lately, i don't think we have to worry about the server) --Lotroadmin 02:11, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Bot usage

I'd like to figure out how to use a bot to make some repetitive changes to articles. For example, replacing the "Only One Use" tag with "Only-One-Use" on all the pages that use Template:Crafting. Do you have suggestions for how to go about this? --Gaerlin 15:06, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

I went ahead and started up my bot on the changes you mentioned. Since it didn't want to pull What Links Here for Template:Crafting, it's running through Category:Recipe Items. You'd think that this category would be includeonly'd from the template, but apparently it isn't so. Are there any other categories you'd like me to run? Thadius856 13:32, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
