I want to take on the job of fighting each monster in game around 100+ times to list all their dropped loot, so that it can be referenced from recipe materials or task board pages. I have yet to find a nice wiki/a that shows exactly where and who to find certain materials from. And would like to help start the work in this area. I have no idea how to use this wiki system and would need a little help getting started.. If someone could send me a line and let me know this is ok and help me get started that would be great.

I have not done a lot myself regarding mob drops, however there are pages in existence for each mob (in example: Blue-crag Crusher). On the individual monster page it lists the items that are dropped. Whether this is done consistently throughout all monster pages I am not sure, but browsing around the mob pages (Which should be listed in Category:Stubs/Creature ) might help you find out. Also, after you write any message for discussion, use four "~" in a row to sign your name, or click the "signature and timestamp" button on the edit box --Savi (talk) 12:26, 15 May 2013 (EDT)
LoL -- a masochist... You need to look a the CATEGORY pages to start with -- the only mobs that drop "crafting mats" (hides) are "animals" -- example: Category:Wolves -- conversely, click on the mat Extraordinary Hide (don't just look at the pop-up, click on it to go to the page) The pages usually list a bunch of mobs that drop that particular hide. See Category:Resource Items
I don't know how current those pages are, however. They take a tremendous amount of work to keep current, and lately there have been fewer and fewer editors working on the wiki.
As for fighting them 100+ times -- that is probably not even close to necessary; once or twice is all that is needed for the "common drops." Only "special items" aka "Rares" require multiple tries because their frequency in the loot tables is very low. Most mobs in the same level range (In most cases 5 clicks, at most 10) drop the same items in the same quantities.
As for WHERE to find the items... check out the crafting guides. Again, they are not necessarily current, but they tend to indicate what mobs drop what materials. (Wood and Ore don't really drop from Mobs. They are only reliably found at nodes. Hides are the only issue for crafters.)
  • And one point to remember -- if you find any information on the Lorebook -- copy it immediately. It's days are numbered. It should already be shut down, but it hasn't happened yet and Sapience hasn't announced an actual date yet.... but it will be "soon(tm)."
  • Don't forget while data collecting -- "Screenshots are your friend." So is logging the Chat window
For tasks see Tasks Bulletin Board -- click on the task, then click on the objective item. Don't just look at the pop-up.

Something I have been reading up on and may work very well for this task of yours is the use of property tags. Basically you just add some hidden text on the monster page saying it has x drop, and then on the item page you can run a query that will list all the monsters that drop x. Which would mean you only have to maintain one page per item rather than two with future changes (at least regarding drops). For a visual -- The bulleted list here was automated by adding a Has Drop property to the relating monster pages. Not trying to confuse you...but if you spend the time to pursue this project you are already editing those mob/item pages so It may be beneficial in the long run...If you are interested let me know, otherwise I may add that to my list of projects ;)

I will respond to your questions here for your convenience. You mentioned not finding an edit for your talk page, were you instead on your user page, which was still uncreated when you wrote your message? On the left side of the page (not talking of the side menu though) there will always be 2 'page tabs' of sorts. The first is the page itself and the 2nd is the Discussion. Both of these must be 'created' initially. So if you are the first to post there is not edit but rather you just type and then save it. If that still doesn't help you let me know and I shall try to help you sort it out -- Never hesitate to ask any questions :)

The pages of which you said you could not find...I did come across Buzzing Gnat Swarm and Bog-toad for lower level mobs. When using the search box, I have found it more likely only populates pages that are exactly what you are typing. For example typing in Steed of Bright Days will pop up that page, but does not (at least for me) show the Item:Steed of Bright Days. It is also sometimes picky about hyphens and spaces and case sensitivity as well. If searching is your enemy (as it is mine sometimes) you can click the category links at the bottom of similar pages and maybe find what you are looking for that way. I entirely agree with your reasoning on wanting to update mob drops, I think it would be very helpful!

To link normal text as I did in the above paragraph you use dual brackets, rather than a single one. Honestly there are a LOT of different ways of linking and showing information and I only know a small piece. A method that a Highly Recommend to you is browsing the edit tabs. So for example, go to a mob page and pretend your going to edit it. You can either see the whole page with the edit on the top right, or a small section with the edit link on the side of a header. Just scroll through how things are written - connecting the text with how it appears visually will help you identify what specific things do. And if you still can't figure it out discussion tabs help :D

Regarding screenshots...if you come across an item or mob without one already that is certainly something you could do. Just depends if you want to focus on one thing or several things at once. If you look under the edit of a mob page you can see how it is set up. It uses templates as well...but under the drops heading you should be able to see how to add additional items that you find that aren't listed. I feel like I'm not explaining anything very clearly to you, lol, I do better with specific questions xD When I first started editing here I knew NOTHING about wiki's and just browsed through how different pages were coded and did plenty of google searches for mediawiki help. Perhaps you could pick one type of mob and go through the steps, seeing what all you want to check/do and figure out what parts you don't know how to do yet and which you do. There are lots of stats listed for mobs, you could either check everything or focus on say, location and what it drops. Regarding drops, you could ensure the item page for that item has the correct type, worth, etc...

Hopefully I haven't just made any clarity you had muddier xD It would be very helpful to have a lotrowiki tutorial for some beginning basics...but I don't know of one and I'd be very bad at writing it, lol. Maybe the first thing to do is just wander around the site a bit and get a feel for things. I started trying to do some better organization of mob drops so hopefully if you focus on ensuring who drops what the list for where to find x scholar mat will be much more convenient :) --Savi (talk) 00:08, 18 May 2013 (EDT)

Savi

Ok I found the Edit (For THIS Page.. lol) On all the other pages the Edit button is within the page Like at the top of each section.. and perhaps that why I didn't find one.. Cause i didn't have any segments.. now I do :) The Monsters/creatures missing were missing from Category:Stubs/Creature Which is where I believed they would all be listed? Are they listed differently? Gnats, Buzzing or something? I'm not sure.. You explanation on several things has made it clearer :) It may take me a bit of time to get in the roll of things but i think I understand a bit more then I did just moments before reading your reply. :) I think I'm going to work on a format for my nifty little page here :) And play around with my Talk page see about learning some of the wiki coding..

Thanks for your help Savi !

You are most welcome. Segment edits are convenient indeed, full page edits can sometimes be a lot to scroll through. Missing from a category makes MUCH more sense -- those categories are placed manually, so it most likely just got overlooked. I also came across Category:Creatures which might be more complete and easier to use than the other. Good luck! Any other questions, the discussion pages are just a click away ^_^
