Questions

But first off, a good move forward, my best compliments.

Icon(s): It would be nice with a different icon than the one for "interior". Perhaps even different icons for the different instance sizes/types, but not so many that it becomes confusing.

Categories: I thought of documenting how to categorize these things. Let me think of it. But mainly something along "it should be possible to find anything that belongs to the region from 'Category:Region'" and also "it is perhaps good to gather clustered instances in a category for the cluster or a corresponding area". Examples are Fornost and Garth Agarwen. Either way, we should always have a "Cat:Region Instances" but exactly how to formulate the guidelines is another story ;)

Again, a good move, keep it up! -- Zimoon 02:51, 23 October 2012 (EDT)

Been sketching and testing a bit thinking of a visitor's view. Tentatively this would do:
  1. Instances go into Scaled, Raid, Clustered categories per the template.
  2. All instances also go into "Category:Region Instances" which always is contained in "Category:Region".
  3. A clustered category always goes into "Category:World instances" without any wrapper category for the region.
  4. The clustered category go into "Category:Area" if the cluster equals an area (e.g. Fornost). Otherwise, if "area" is inappropriate but the cluster is contained within a narrow section of a region we use "Category:ClusterName" and add that category to "Category:Region". Finally, if the cluster is not contained in a narrow location but spread about Middle-earth, no further categorization is needed.
  5. For the cluster, add all categories which are pertaining to the cluster into category described in 4). Usually those are deeds, mobs, quests, titles, etc.
Comments:
2) This way visitors may always find whatever from the regional categories.
3) No need to wrap a cluster category in a Region category even if several clusters exist within a certain region. A visitor browsing "Category:World instances" is probably looking for the cluster name, maybe even without knowing the region name. It would just add an extra indirection but no value. The categories should contain a short description, including location(s).
5) Simplifies finding such stuff that pertain to those instances.

Those all sound like good ideas to me! -- Eggolass (talk) 15:01, 23 October 2012 (EDT)

Egolass, I added this template to Create new location. Not that it will happen that often, but it is a good practise to have link-to where people perhaps are searching. That said...

Is there a "wanted format" posted somewhere that could be included in the /doc text? Otherwise you could perhaps whip together one based on a few "good looking" pages of your choice, can you? Usually it is great to use a somewhat common look on pages as that helps people to quickly find what they want, certainly when they in a rush are looking for particular information. I guess we have quite a few such players, wiped once and need a tip, quickly. That plus a uniform look is breathing quality and carefulness, which is the value-adder we provide over many other Lotro fan-sites ;-)

Epic Battles

  • The Template and doc file have been updated to allow for the "new way" in which the Epic Battles have been created and are discussed.
Also changed "xx-man Raid" to be non sexist.

size: The maximum number of players for a run

1 = Solo
2 = Duo
3 = Small Fellowship(3)
4 = Solo/Duo
5 = Solo/Duo, Small Fellowship(3)
6 = Fellowship(6)
7 = Solo/Duo, Fellowship(6)
8 = Solo/Duo, 12-person Raid
12 = 12-person Raid
24 = 24-person Raid
  • The alternative to this approach would be to allow the combining of 1/2/3 for example to generate "Solo/Duo, Small Fellowship(3)" -- but that is beyond my "templating" skill.
  • There is also the issue of "level" -- Epic Battles do not "scale" the way classic instances do; however they are open to all characters from Level 10 up. I am not aware of any particular "name" which Turbine has applied here, other than in the description: "Character Upscalling", so I don't know if it makes sense to add a parameter for that or not. At least in the short-run, that technology applies only to the Epic Battles.

Skirmishes

To make these work for skirmishes, we need to make it so that if you put Skirmish in the Cluster parameter, it links to and categorizes under Category:Skirmishes instead of Category:Skirmish Instances unless we should change the existing category.

There should be a size option for skirmishes too, I don't know if that should be another number or if we can make the word "Skirmish" work. That would be "Solo, Duo, Small Fellowship(3), Fellowship (6), 12-person Raid". Gnagerwine (talk) 01:18, 3 September 2018 (UTC)

I have added the info-box to all skirmishes, which transfers them from Category:Skirmish to Category:Skirmish Instances. This is merely a category and is referenced or included in relevant pages and categories - these have been updated. I have left the size blank, so they will not also be included in the raids category, as that is more appropriate for world instances. The info box and deletion of manual categories also cleaned up any incorect location cations, so they all appear in Category:<region> Instances. They level is set to the minimum level required and obtain access to the skirmish, even though it can be run at lower levels once acquired. Noddi (talk) 00:43, 11 March 2024 (UTC)

Cluster

Moved from Template talk:Cluster:

Is this template really needed?

While updating some other stuff, I noticed that a "need" for {{Template: Cluster}} existed in the use of the "Infobox: Instances" in the various Helm's Deep pages. (seen when expanding "Templates used on this page")

However, doing a bit of further research it appears that the "Cluster" parameter was created by User: Eggolass and User: Zimoon in October of 2012 and is used for auto-categorization.

This template is called for by template infobox instance however this template did not previously exist. I have created something which is probably garbage.

It is possible that the template infobox instances is bugged, generating a template reference by accident.

  • If The template is broken, someone needs to fix the reference as I don't see it. However, if the Reference is legit, someone needs to "guess" what was intended to be in this template!!!
