Item Talk:Shimmering Elf-stone

I am so confused. I know I messed this all up; it's not showing properly, and I don't know what I did wrong. Feel free to fix and I'll come back and look at the code. Notes:

  • I think this and Item:Glorfindel's Beryl need to be disambig'ed on the [plain] Item:Elf-stone page. I tried doing that in the disambig section of this template, but it went wonky so I left it blank.
  • Should the barring skill be "exhaustion"?
  • Should it have a cooldown number (25 min, because inspiration is 15m and exhaustion is 10m?)
  • I forgot how to make a menu. The quest info is going to be long.
  • I think the standard is for the quest list to go first, but I think in this item's case, people are more likely to be coming to learn how it works, before they come to find out what quests will grant it, so it would be better to have it at the top...?
  • Sorry I couldn't get a "clean" icon image. I'll try and remember on my next book quest.

At least it's a start, I guess. :/ -Adelas (talk) 04:29, 11 September 2011 (EDT)

No problem! The |disambig = part confuses a lot of people. That one basically just says "This item's 'home' page is..." because we often "pull out" item information to other pages, so the display is a little different in those cases. Example:
Shimmering Elf-stone

  • Cannot use with Effect: Exhaustion
is a condensed version of what you just set up on Item:Shimmering Elf-stone (don't forget to include "Item:" when linking to item pages). You'll see that the flavor text isn't there, the font is a little smaller, and it has a link in the name.
Re: Exhaustion - the look of this tooltip should match the game's, for the most part. If it says "Cannot Use with Effect: Exhaustion," then you've got it perfectly. "Barring Skill" will just add "Barring Skill: Exhaustion," which (I suspect) isn't what you want.
Re: Cooldown - same as above; I don't remember the in-game item displaying a cooldown, but if it does, then definitely add it. If not, definitely mention it in your description. :)
If by "menu" you mean headers, you can do the following:
== Usage Information ==
=== Related Quests ===
or whichever you prefer. More = signs will result in lower-level headers, but the top level ("= Title =") is reserved for the page title, and that's taken care of automatically.
Hope that helps somewhat! Sethladan 12:27, 11 September 2011 (EDT)
Thanks for the clarification on that stuff. The menu I'm talking about is the little white box that actually has links to the different headers. It doesn't appear to automatically generate. Is there a rule for when it must/must not be included on a page? -Adelas (talk) 00:35, 12 September 2011 (EDT)
Ah-hah! Okay. I can't think off-hand of any consistent rule regarding those menus (table of contents). They'll appear automatically once there are 3 or 4 headers on a page (I forget the number). You can force one to appear with __TOC__ (two underscores on each side, capital letters between). The more common approach across the wiki is to use {{Toc-right}} which does almost the same thing, but the ToC (table of contents) floats on the right side of the page and text wraps around it.
In this case, I think you'd want to go with the first option, since the item tooltip is already floating on the right side. The default position (regardless of where you type __TOC__) for it is above the first header, though, so you probably want to add some "lead-in" text. I'll throw something quick onto the page and please feel free to play with it as much as you like. Sethladan 01:22, 12 September 2011 (EDT)
