Disambiguation on Lotro-Wiki.com

Here on Lotro-Wiki we use Template: Other for this purpose.
Template: Other is effectively a "Hatnote" as used on Wikipedia.
  • The parameter "disambigpage" found in many of our Templates (especially Template: Item Tooltip) needs to be defined.
I have no idea what it REALLY means. I only know that when it fails to match the actual page name {{PAGENAME}}, in some cases, it causes the tool-top itself to appear on the left side of the page, instead of on the right!

One use of this template is to bring to a user's attention that there is more than one article in the wiki with the exact same, or very similarly named, article. Reading or editing that article, without carefully noting what might be very minor differences, could result in several new errors being introduced to the wiki data. These similarly named articles could be about completely different subjects or different versions of the same subject. So the use of Template: Other is a chance to point out the potential for error.
Some examples of articles that would benefit from Template: Other being added:
  • generic or uniquely named NPCs, or creatures, with multiple locations and having different stats, services, skills, drops, etc
Example: Zagh the troll from Fangorn's Edge in Nan Curunír vs Zagh, Master of the Guard an orc from Goblin-town in the Misty Mountains; Halbarad, before having his different regional pages merged, would illustrate this issue as well.
  • generic creatures whose names are easily confused.
Example: Glistening Limrafn vs Glittering Limrafn (Note: in this case, these are hypothetical creatures to show similar names.)
  • Items, Deeds, Quests, or Skills all having the same name
Example: The Item:The Verses of the North vs the deed The Verses of the North.

Disambiguation on Wikipedia

On Wikipedia the term "Disambiguation" is used to refer to the process of differentiating articles with the same name but different content from each other.

"Disambiguation pages ("dab pages") are designed to help a reader find Wikipedia articles on different topics that could be referenced by the same search term, as described in the Disambiguation guideline. Disambiguation pages are not articles; they are aids in searching."

Wikipedia Help: Disambiguation

Disambiguation pages on Wikipedia are used as a process of resolving conflicts in article titles that occur when a single term can be associated with more than one topic, making that term likely to be the natural title for more than one article. In other words, disambiguations are paths leading to different articles which could, in principle, have the same title.
