Gilraen was a woman of the northern Dúnedain, descended from the royal house through her father Dírhael. Gilraen married Arathorn II in 2929 T.A., the year before Arathorn became Chieftain of the Dúnedain and two years before their son Aragorn was born. Though Gilraen was still young for marriage among the Dúnedain, her mother Ivorwen supported the marriage. Dírhael did not, having foreseen that Arathorn would die young. Ivorwen, also foresighted, argued this was all the more reason for Gilraen and Arathorn to be married sooner rather than later. They were both right, to some extent- Arathorn died in 2933 T.A., just two years after Aragorn's birth. Gilraen then brought Aragorn to Rivendell for his protection, where they remained for many years.

Gilraen returned to the Dúnedain eventually, and died among them in 3007 T.A.. Her last words to her son were "Ónen i-Estel Edain, ú-chebin estel anim." - "I gave Hope to the Dúnedain, I have kept no hope for myself." (Estel, hope, being the name Aragorn used as a child in Rivendell).
