A place to store your precious!

Vaults allow characters to safely store items, in addition to regular Inventory Bags.

The Vault is split in two sections: one section is accessible only per character; the other section is shared by all characters on the same server and account.

All Vaults throughout Middle-earth are linked, meaning that if a character deposits an item into the vault at Michel Delving in the Shire, that item is available also from the vault in Galtrev in Dunland, and any other Vault.

Vaults can be accessed in either of the following ways:

Both the Character Vault and the Shared Vault may be expanded by purchasing upgrades, see below.

For locations, see Vault-keeper.

Vault Spaces

Character Vault

The Character Vault is private and cannot be accessed by any other character.

  • Every character receives their initial 30-item Vault space for free.
  • Items that are bound to the character can be stored in the shared vault, but quest items can only be stored in the Character Vault. (Some items cannot be stored in a Vault at all.)
  • Each upgrade adds 15 slots to the Character's storage space, only for the purchasing character!
  • The first six upgrades (Tier I - VI) can be purchased for in-game coin or from the Lotro Store.
  • Tiers VII and up can only be purchased with LOTRO Points from the Lotro Store.
  • Only one Vault Upgrade is available at any given time - they cannot be purchased out of order, and they cannot be purchased all at one time. If you have purchased Upgrade I, then you will see Upgrade II available in the store. After you purchase Upgrade II, then you will see Upgrade III available.
  • Note: You must open your in-game vault at least once prior to purchase of any upgrade.

The first six Vault Upgrades can be purchased for in-game Gold. The remainder must be purchased in the on-line store for LOTRO Points .

Shared Storage

Shared Storage is Vault space that is shared between all characters on your account on the same server.
It allows all your characters on the same server and account to store and retrieve items from this shared storage space.
You can access your Shared Storage directly from the Vault-keeper's menu or by clicking on the icon at the top of the Character Vault or Wardrobe panels.
  • Notice that items that are bound to a character can be stored in the Shared Vault, however, they can only be retrieved by the character which is their owner.
A check box at the bottom of the vault display will hide those items bound to other characters from your view.
  • "Unique" or "quest" Items cannot be stored either in your character's personal vault or shared storage.
  • TIP: Housing Storage can also be used for sharing and/or transferring items between all characters on the same server with access to your house, not just those associated with your account!
  • Shared Storage must be purchased but is available to all account types: VIP, Premium and Free to Play.
  • Founder accounts start with Shared Storage IV.
  • Historical Note: Purchasers of the LOTRO Adventurer’s Pack (Siege of Mirkwood expansion pre-sale) got 2 extra character slots and 20 slots of shared bank storage. (This option is no longer available).
  • The first "upgrade" adds 20 slots to the shared storage space, each subsequent upgrade adds 10 slots.
  • All upgrades must be purchased from the Lotro Store.
  • Only one Vault Upgrade is available at any given time - they cannot be purchased out of order, and they cannot be purchased all at one time. If you have purchased Upgrade I, then you will see Upgrade II available in the store. After you purchase Upgrade II, then you will see Upgrade III available.
NOTE: You MUST open your in-game vault at least once prior to purchase of any upgrade.
  • The maximum amount of Shared Storage directly from the LOTRO Store is 310 slots, which are account-wide and permanent.
  • The following cash purchases add an additional of 10 extra account wide slots each, up to a total of 340:

Shared Wardrobe

Shared Wardrobe Storage must be purchased, but is available to all account types: VIP, Premium and Free to Play. It allows all your characters on the same server and account to store and retrieve items from this shared storage space.

You can access your Shared Storage directly from the Vault-keeper's menu or by clicking on the icon at the top of the Character Vault or Wardrobe panels.

  • Initial space and upgrades are purchased from the Lotro Store, see list below.
  • These purchases are applied account-wide per server, and available to all classes and levels.
  • VIP players receive 20 Shared Storage slots as part of their subscription.
  • If you downgrade from VIP to Premium status:
    • Items placed in the Wardrobe as a VIP player can be used and dyed but not replaced.
    • Your total available number of Shared Wardrobe slots is reduced by 20 (including the Maximum number of Shared Wardrobe Slots available). I.e. the 20 Shared Wardrobe slots received as a VIP player are removed. You must purchase those 20 slots from the LOTRO Store to again utilize them.

As of February 2024, the maximum Shared Wardrobe limit is 410 slots for VIP players, and 390 for Premium and Free to Play accounts, account-wide and permanent.

  • Each upgrade to the Wardrobe adds 10 extra slots.

Housing Storage

  • Standard, Deluxe and Kinship houses all have storage available. It appears as a chest inside a house.
  • Housing Storage allows you to share items among any character on the same server who has access to the storage.
  • The Housing Maintenance Panel controls who has access to the house. For a personal house, all characters on the account are considered owners of the house, so they automatically have access to the house and its storage. Permission to access the storage may be given to other characters or to all members of the owner's kinship.
  • The owner of a personal house can store bound items. Items bound to account can be shared this way by all characters on the same account and server. Nevertheless, items bound to a character can be retrieved by that character only.
  • Initial storage is 30 slots. Upgrades can be purchased for In-game Currency or Mithril Coins:
  • Upgrades for personal houses are specific to account and server. Once purchased, they remain available should the owner buy another house.
  • Housing Storage upgrades are not available in the LOTRO Store.

Housing Escrow

  • If your house is foreclosed upon or abandoned, any items in your Housing Storage are placed in Escrow.
  • You can view any Escrow you may have at any Vault-keeper or Escrow Broker.
  • Should you purchase another house, your Housing Storage will automatically be filled with any Escrow items you may have.
If this occurs, you may need to purchase additional Housing Storage to "free" up space so that you can add things to your Housing Storage.
