Welcome

Template:Hat

Welcome, its always good to have wiki veterans help out. I see someone promoted you to ninja, let me know when you want more powers, but you should have enough to avoid the captcha. --Lotroadmin (talk) 23:43, 19 July 2016 (UTC)
For what it's worth -- I see that Ravanel (talk) is back editing on a regular basis now. I believe that she is still based in the ?Netherlands? She has been around the WIKI much longer than I have.
Officially retired, I'm now based in Elizabethtown, PA -- near Harrisburg, and so on Eastern Time. I do a lot of the "housekeeping" type work (patrolling and the like), and tend to be on-line for a couple of hours a day. One resource we have been severly lacking recently has been strong knowlege of the "fun stuff" -- templates, and javascript support. I see from the tools that you have been uploading this seems to be a particular area of interest of yours.
One other thing which is sorely in need of work is the "documentation" -- every once in a while I try to capture the "folklore" of the WIKI -- i.e. those things which were known by the founders and early editors, but which were never written down -- under the general heading of "the great documentation project." Seth did a tremendous job with documenting most of the templates last year, but there is still much to be done. So, if you see something like that which needs doing, don't hesitate to dig in.
I have tones of "stuff" under my user talk page, feel free to grab anything that might be useful.
The other thing which we have not had a lot of effort with recently is wiki-bots. I have one setup (and I blieve there are 3 or 4 others still active) - PYwikibot.

One other thing I should mention -- there is (or at least was) a test wiki server. I haven't tried to use it in ages, so I don't know if it is still active. Check with LOTROadmin.

  • Great, thanks. :) I'll be plowing though a bunch more improvements and whatnot, be sure to check out the https://discord.me/lotro-wiki chat server when you get a chance. It's very useful for live chat with other editors and admins. It's kind of like IRC, Mumble, Teamspeak, and a bunch of other chat systems rolled into one. Oh... and it is 100% free. :) Technical 13 (talk) 14:42, 21 July 2016 (UTC)

Sitenotice

  • A good majority of the people have been joining the Discord based on that site notice. I intentionally made it small to not be obtrusive, while still being visible and easy to access. I also added it to a page which is linked to from "Help pages" in the sidebar. There's also a lotro-wiki specific Discord at https://discord.me/lotro-wiki -- great for collaborating on wiki stuff or as a place for people not familiar with editing that don't understand the old school IRC stuff or would rather use voice to request changes or make suggestions. Technical 13 (talk) 20:24, 23 July 2016 (UTC)
I'm gonna have to agree with Lotroadmin on this one. It shouldn't have been done without at least asking Lotroadmin if it was ok, mainly because it links to an external site and displays on every single LotRO-Wiki page. While I think it's great that you've been updating and creating what could be very useful templates, something like a sitenotice should've either been run by Lotroadmin or been asked about on Talk:Main Page to gain what Wikipedia calls consensus. -- Gestrid (previously Super3588) (talk) 05:30, 24 July 2016 (UTC)
I think we can remove the IRC and mumble under the help toolbar. I'm okay if you want to add a temporary burb under the News and Updates, I did add a link under the Contributors corner. --Lotroadmin (talk) 06:05, 24 July 2016 (UTC)
Only admins and above can edit the main page. Technical 13, if you want to add something, you can post it here and someone (probably either me or Lotroadmin) will put it there. -- Gestrid (previously Super3588) (talk) 06:24, 24 July 2016 (UTC)

Avoid copying content from DDOwiki

Technical 13
Even though both sites use a free as in beer license, DDO uses CC and this site use FDL. In order to copy content from one site to the other the license also needs to be the same or copied with it.

--Lotroadmin (talk) 07:24, 24 July 2016 (UTC)

  • The stuff I have been copying over has been, for the most part, created by me in the first place and licensing is not an issue. Also, the CC license that DDOwiki uses simply says that there must be attribution, of which a link to the source in the edit summary does suffice. Technical 13 (talk) 14:21, 24 July 2016 (UTC)

Suggestion

Hey, I just wanted to make a suggestion for all these templates you're creating and modifying.

Recently, when we updated some of our maintenance templates, one of the other users here created the templates in userspace, asked our opinion on them, and allowed us to modify them so they looked right to us.

My suggestion would be that, for all these new templates you're creating, you create them in userspace first so we can all take a look at them and modify them if needed. Then, when they're ready, we can move them to the appropriate place. For templates you plan to modify, try copying the source code into a new userspace page and modifying it there, as we did when we updated our templates. We can then give feedback and modify them as needed, and, when they're good to go, we can change the source code on the "live" page. For the pages only admins can edit, I believe you're able to still view and copy the source code.

Another example of this is when someone copied the main page's source code years ago in order to update it. It used to look like this, but, thanks to the work of one user, who was an Editor like yourself, the Main Page got the style it currently has today.

Bug with all your banners on lotroadmin page

Template:Hat

the issue showed up with the obsolete templete, and i just moved it into a no include region --Lotroadmin (talk) 20:29, 24 July 2016 (UTC)
  • I'm not sure what the bug is/was here. Can someone provide a screenshot or explain better? I'd love to help and fix the problem. Technical 13 (talk) 23:16, 24 July 2016 (UTC)
This historical problem had to do with "Stubs" -- see: User:Magill/Sandbox-stubs - "Work Done" at the top.
Note that what I am trying to achieve is found further down on the page as: User:Magill/Sandbox-U18.2_-_Minstrel_instruments#Eastern Rohan what I want - If you edit that section independently, the left margin jumps back to where it belongs. {{clr}} doesn't fix it. Neither does <br clear="all"/>
I have not had the time to track down the culpret.
Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 17:47, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
  • Currently at work, but I'll look into it as soon as I have a free moment. Technical 13 ( t | e | c | h ) 19:56, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
Okay, so I had a peek. The issue with User:Magill/Sandbox-U18.2_-_Minstrel_instruments#Eastern_Rohan is that you are trying to indent a table with a definition list. There is no way that can ever work... In order to indent the table you either have to set it to full width of the page and set the margin to push it over the desired amount or you have to set the table to have the desired amount of indent worth of padding. The reason that {{Clear}} isn't fixing it is because the way that you are attempting to do it actually causes the MediaWiki parser to produce broken HTML at a lower level than a Template:Tag can fix. You're putting a table in a definition list, and the two aren't compatible. One's a block element and the other is an in-line style element. I don't see that with the banners I created though. Technical 13 ( t | e | c | h ) 20:30, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
Are you saying that the "::" usage defines a definition list?
If you have a normal table, it is easy to indent it using the "::" syntax -- it is only when there is a template involved (a nested table situation?) that it fails - usually by simply doing nothing. The section "Eastern Rohan what I want" is set-up that way.
I guess the corollary is -- Why is the parser producing broken html instead of throwing an error?
A related question would then become -- is there anything like the W3 Verifier for Wikicode?
And By the way -- I noticed with the new version of Media Wiki, I now have a bunch of "stuff" now at the bottom of the page. Is that documented anywhere? While most buttons seem to be "obvious" -- the implications of "html4strict" is elusive.
Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 13:01, 29 July 2016 (UTC)
  • Yes, definition lists are initiated with ; and/or :
Yes, it's easy to indent it that way - but it's a structurally poor way to do it. Much better to use CSS to style it indented the way you want.
That's a question for the MediaWiki developers themselves? I'm guessing, based on my familiarity with them, they will say, "well, those things aren't intended to be used together in that way." or "there is no way to make tidy or the parser perfect to look for all misuses of code." or ... I'm sure you get the idea.
You can use validator.w3.org and just pass it the URL for the page you want to check. EG: https://validator.w3.org/nu/?doc=https%3A%2F%2Flotro-wiki.com%2Findex.php%2FUser_talk%3ATechnical_13&showsource=yes
That's one of the gadgets and can be turned off very easily if you don't like it. The source for it can be found on MediaWiki:Common.css#****_11._Edittools_****, MediaWiki:Edittools, and MediaWiki:Gadget-Edittools.js are the pages that create it and the documentation itself is on https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:CharInsert#Advanced_Installation (I mentioned it in Template:Diff on MediaWiki:Common.css#****_11._Edittools_****). For those that wish to disable it - https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/203325138601508866/208596894148984832/unknown.png -- just uncheck the box on the gadgets tab of your preferences.
As far as html4strict goes... Lotroadmin (Contribs • User Talk) needs to install https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:SyntaxHighlight for it to work (and the documentation is there). It's already been downloaded since it is bundled with MW1.21+, he just needs to add require_once "$IP/extensions/SyntaxHighlight_GeSHi/SyntaxHighlight_GeSHi.php"; to LocalSettings.php

  • Yes, I've been about 50/50 on docs... I've added the doc links to pages but need to run off to work, so I don't have time to populate them right now. After work I have an appointment to get some new clothes and shoes with a friend. I may have time to do some of them between then and when I stream "Template:OnYouTube" on Template:OnTwitch. • Seth and I made the change - putting the use "subst:Welcome" header on the welcome template doc page -- back in 2013. See the Talk page for Template Welcome.
There had been a comment in the template instructing on its use (i.e. use "subst," not as a template). We just moved that comment to the doc page when we created the documentation page.
  • I don't see any evidence of recent bot activity in the log (recent changtes) -- maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place.

Tips

Do you have a template that you SUBST: for the Tips section on my talk page - User talk:Technical 13#Tips? I'm asking because it needs to be updated with the changes to {{Stub/Construction}} which is now looking for just a username instead of a talk page link. Technical 13 ( t | e | c | h ) 12:25, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

This is one of those yes and no answers. Basically if you look at the bottom of the page User:Magill/ToDo at the bottom under "stuff - template idea" you will see the code that I simply cut and paste to accounts. I've just never gotten around to bothering to create an actual template because the promotion process is not accomplished by simply copying the information to the Users talk page. (I just updated it with the changes to the tag.)
  • The one question I have is - Why "Contributions" - It is not a particularly useful bit of information.
  • There is also the issue of "Discussion" vs. "Talk" vs "Message" -- The page has always been called a "talk page" (as on the Wikipedia) even though MediaWiki labels the tab "Discussion" on the tab. Changing it to message is one of those "huh?" type changes.
Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 14:38, 5 August 2016 (UTC)
  • Updated your copy/paste code. Let me know if there's any issue with it. :)
Contributions can be a very important bit of information. It's mostly used for helping people who go to your talk page and say why doesn't the thing I'm doing work? Technical 13 ( t | e | c | h ) 15:37, 5 August 2016 (UTC) which is why it probably should be on MediaWiki:Signature (eg like DDOwiki). It's also useful in templates like the {{Construction}} template, because if the template is left behind and someone comes upon it 3 years down the road, it makes it easier to see what other page they might have abandoned templates like it on. Or, if there is an obvious copy/paste error, it's easier to track down where-else the error might be.
The page is User_talk: - Talk is a very inappropriate description... Talk, by definition, requires spoken words. This is a text based environment - the term "talk" should be banned. Discussion is an appropriate term to use. It is the exchange of thoughts, ideas, and facts through any communicative means. I'm okay with that. However, when you want to start a new discussion, you lead in with a message. That's why I prefer the term message for signatures and links to user talk pages.
Technical 13 ( t | e | c | h ) 15:37, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

You've been banned for one month

I've repeatedly asked you to not hide the external link icon. I will point out this is the first time I've banned someone that wasn't spam for the lifetime of this wiki. If you choose to continue editing, please avoid editing templates. --Lotroadmin (talk) 06:56, 9 August 2016 (UTC)

  • You blocked me for a month for an unfinished template I was starting to put together and had to put on hold to go to work. Anyways, I'll continue to contribute to this wiki, at least for the time being. It's so much easier to work with people than to block them, unless you want this to be a private wiki that people can't contribute to and people don't read very often because there is so much missing information. Have a great day. Technical 13 ( t | e | c | h ) 23:22, 9 September 2016 (UTC)
We've repeately ask you not to hide external links, I've asked you to not promote lotro-wiki, and I'm asking you not to create or edit any template. Please find an admin to take over the facebook page or remove it. Because you failed to discuss this, please refrain from doing anything on the social media section. Again, please dont promote the wiki, use lotro-wiki in any way without discussing first. Consider this your final warning. --Lotroadmin (talk) 12:27, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
You created template for something as simple as color. Why? And you realize that you will be getting another month ban because of editing/creating a template? --Lotroadmin (talk) 04:03, 16 January 2017 (UTC)
Correct, being banned from botting, template edits, etc means you dont get to do the edits or even offer to do the edits. Like i said before, if you want to participate on this wiki focus on the content. --Lotroadmin (talk) 22:09, 21 January 2017 (UTC)
