Google Maps

At one time, (prior to July 2013) the Lorebook did have an interface with Google Maps, and the Devs provided us (the player community) with them.
but that was long ago:{

Did you find a way to access those old Google Maps?

A number of them are capured here: https://www.visionsofthering.com/ohmaps.shtml

(Not sure editing this post is the right way to answer this 'Talk', what should I do instead?)

Answer

I do not have any special access to this previous work. Maps are built on-line with a simple and nice tool I've developed just for fun.

I did not know about these old Maps. Indeed I noticed that the world has changed since then. Later I will post some portions of the maps showing changes.

I have not the goal of mapping an entire region or area, but just some small locations. Although complete mapping could be done as well, I am not sure it will be good to make it public.

Top view images

Thanks for adding these! In the future, please save your pictures using the .jpg extension, as this will help us keep the file size smaller and keep things more consistent around the wiki. :) Sethladan 03:49, 13 October 2014 (UTC)

Thanks. I will put JPG files. I was using PNG since it allows also for showing the transparency (or alpha) channel. I did not check how to do it with JPG. Otherwise I will just remove this channel.

BTW, I'm not an expert, but I thought that Jpg maintained the alpha channel, but Png did not. ??
Is there any way you can increase the size of these images and maintain any semblance of quality?
Looking at Marshwater Fort, the image would be much more informative if it were "big enough to see".
I would recommend using a standard "File" parameter rather than the Gallery syntax to insert the maps.
* see: Help:Images#Examples:_Syntax_for_displaying_Images for more on the display syntax.
(Note: The underscores are translations of spaces in file names. A pretty standard Wiki/Webserver conversion)
-- yields
Overhead view

I moved a bunch of Dudankin's images to the end-of-page gallery style 'cause I figured it would be easier and more straightforward than trying to find a visually appealing way of lining them up with the main image at the top. Sethladan 00:34, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
This is one of those toss-up default display issues. (As in, "First Impression" -- does anybody try to go beyond that?)
I don't know how and I never really remember, how to convince an image to "blow-up" to a larger size while viewing a page. (I think I know I've seen some labeled "click to enlarge" or "click for larger image," but can't find any. But I might simply be mis-remembering things. :) )
Normally, if one simply clicks on the image, the "File" page is displayed -- which is what prompted my original question -- If the base image is larger, when you go to that page, you can view the detail. (Using the Browser's inherent "enlarge" text feature is unsatisfying as it tends to leave the browser in that condition which then screws up "the next page." However, if the base image is smaller, using the "px" size parameter is the only way I know of to get that image up to a viewable size.
The extended Wikipedia image syntax (most of which Media Wiki doesn't have implemented) has nothing that implies such a feature.

MediaWiki: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Images
I note that Gallery does have size options, but I have never played to find out if they are implemented here. (So much of our documentation dates from 2007 :(.
Beornings seem to have gotten Beoring... :)

Answer:

As for how to display these images in the Wiki, I would follow your suggestions, since you are more expert. It may be worth to add an additional section in the Location pages, like "Overview" or "Top view", instead of using the 'Gallery' section. Of course it will be optional.

As for acquiring these images in a better resolution, I am not sure if it is possible. I have to check... Unfortunately, JPG further reduces their quality.

Player Character categories

Hey there Dudankin, I'd just was marking off the edits you had done to your PC page, Dudankin while you have changed some of the attributes to:

|world = Gladden
|vocation = Armourer
|class = Guardian
|race = Dwarf
|region = Bree

Adding the link "[[]]"'s to the values removes the categories that are automatically applied to the page; while User pages don't end up in an uncategorised bin it won't affect much, but your PC page as it stands is only apart of the Gladden PCs category.

You could leave the links in there if you wish, and if you also want your character to be categorised into the other: Dwarf Player Characters, Guardian Player Characters categories you could just manually add the categoroes to the bottom of the page,

Thanks for the advise. I put it back in normal form.
