Tips for New Editors

What is this language we use here? The code we use is called wiki markup. It is not HTML but under the hood the wiki-engine creates HTML from the markup; see Wiki Markup for more information. Lotro-Wiki uses MediaWiki which recognizes wiki-markup, many HTML tags, and CSS. Staying Current In the left-hand column, the link "Recent discussions" will list any recent change to a talk page. Using that link is an easy way to "stay current". An even better way is to chat with other editors and admins. Red links in Preview Mode If a link turns out red it indicates an error, usually a typo or "page not found". Something that should be fixed before saving them page. However, when editing in newly added areas we accept red links for pages expected to new added soon; all red links can be found using a link under "Special Pages" in the left-hand column. Removing "Stub" Tags Some pages have an Article Management Tag, meaning the page needs additional work. When adding the missing information, please remove the tag, which removes the page from e.g. Category:Stubs/Mob or whatever category the page was tagged for. Creature vs. Mob "Mob" is an enemy inside an instance, while "creature" is any other enemy. Kill vs. Defeat At Lotro-Wiki we never say "kill" but always say "defeat". How to Delete a Page? Only Administrators have the ability to delete pages. Instead you can tag a page for deletion by adding {{Delete Page|<reason>}} at the top of the page. However, we prefer to keep old pages around for reference so we use the {{Obsolete}} tag. Similarly, certain information on a page could be useful for future reference. Either hide that info under a collapsed table titled e.g. "obsolete info", or move that info to a section at the bottom of the page, similarly titled, or to a new page with a name indicating the info is old. Chat with other editors for advice. How to Move (Rename) a Page? Only Administrators can move a page, use the {{Move}} tag, and give a reason why.

I was checking if there were any uncategorised pages around, and found a lot of the items you have added in the past few days. Would you like me to categorize them, or are you planning on adding more info on the items (stats, slots, etc.) later?

Hey again! Thanks for adding all those items! I'm surprised by how many we didn't have yet, since the update is from a while back.

Pages get categorised automatically if you use a template, but you've just added them yourself I presume. When you press New Item on the left-hand side of the screen you automatically get the template added to your page and you can fill in the details yourself. This is the way most items are added. If you plan on adding the stats etc. later, you can find the template at Boilerplate:Item. You will have to add the template manually (just copy-paste it) to the pages you've already created. For help and information, you can also check Help:Items.

By the way, the category system is there so the search engine for lotro-wiki can easily find the page a user is searching for. It also helps us editors to keep stuff organized.

Try to use the 'New Item' button next time you create an item page. I will add a category to the pages you've already created later ^^. I hope this helps :)

Ah, ok, thanks for the information.

I did not use the right way to create them, as I used my LID app where I generate the item page from the name when I double-click on a missing item and then I only had "edit this page" to add text.

I will use 'New Item' next time...

I did not remove them in the existing tables, I only updated the tooltips values when they were hard-coded for lvl 95 (without tables)

But the lvl 95 item also exists again. This items are from scaled instances. I made a look in your contribs, you made that in much Item pages.

But when there is only a 95 Tooltip (old level cap), it must be replaced by a lvl 100 Tooltip (otherwise people on forums say that data are not updated...). (or no level on the Tooltip and a table as you said). Those items are scaled from 45 to lvl cap and Tooltips cannot be kept with all levels.

About the question from User:QNo, I don't know why it is updated with my username, I did not even see it (maybe a wrong click...)

Yes, it is better. Although for skraids loots, the lvl 95 should not exist anymore as they only drop at lvl cap (but they are still in the LOTRO database, but not scalable (hard coded for 95 and 100 only))

On Spam

When you delete a spam page, mind deleting the content so that the message content doesn't show up on the deletion log? For example, this shows up "(Spam: content was: " == Engagin blah blah blah.)" If you don't delete it, part of the spam still appears on the site. It would be easy to verify what was deleted through the history logs anyways. Starbursty (talk) 05:27, 28 February 2016 (UTC)

What is/Which LID

It seems that there are multiple versions of LID -- you linked to one which is apparently a stand-alone PC application. Where does it come from.

I'm more familiar with the LUA version (which uses the Lua Item Treasury as its engine) http://www.lotrointerface.com/downloads/fileinfo.php?id=869

Are they the same? Are the databases the same? Being a Mac person, I can run the Lua version but not the stand-alone version.

LID (LOTRO Item Database) is a small tool I had done in C/C++ with a SQL Server Compact database (I had posted a video on Youtube for basic functionalities : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m47ZHVm_AE0 )

It is compiled for Win32 with Visual Studio 2013, so Windows only.

The main advantages are that the database is auto-updatable (I use LUA scripts on my side to update it on the server so that the program detects changes),

it displays cosmetics for all items (stored on the Cloud server of my provider), it uses LOTRO-Wiki to display information for items --Castorix (talk) 10:57, 6 March 2016 (UTC)

Nadhin items

• Hi, thanks for showing interest in my work. I am not deleting any Nadhin items. Just reorganizing them. Nadhin items are hard to organize because all rarity and levels have the exact same name. So far users have been haphazardly adding them and appending the rarity and level at the end of each item name or just adding a single version with the wrong name, lots of confusion. If this keeps up it will create dozens of entries much like the Legendary Items issues a while back. To better organize these items I am converting them over using a slightly different naming scheme (duplicating the same fix used by the Legendary Items). This new naming scheme has the rarity added to the name (as a suffix). Each of these new rarity versions will house the all the different copies for each item level for that rarity. For example: Item:Light Nadhin Gauntlets (which I created to begin with) is now  Light Nadhin Gauntlets,  Light Nadhin Gauntlets,  Light Nadhin Gauntlets. Each of the new items has a table in it which you can look-up the item level specific stats.
• I believe by organizing Nadhin items in a better and easier way, wiki-users will be more inclined to add item data to the wiki. It might be even better to add a parent item named Item:Light Nadhin Gauntlets that houses links to the 3 rarity versions I have created. Or perhaps a Nadhin parent page that houses all of the various versions as a kind of table of items.
• As for your comment about these items being official names in the database and not appearing in Google and in LID. That is a problem with all items in this wiki because all of the item pages start with the prefix 'item:' so search engines cant find the names without the prefix half the time anyway.

But the standardization for items is https://lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Item:official_item_name and all actual items appear in Google and LID. If you remove Item:Light Nadhin Gauntlets, they don't appear anymore. So Item:Light Nadhin Gauntlets should be kept with links to  Light Nadhin Gauntlets,  Light Nadhin Gauntlets, etc...

Can be tested by typing "Light Nadhin Gauntlets" in Google and LID : no more working links in Google and "Page not found (Item:Light_Nadhin_Gauntlets)" in LID

There are almost no Nadhin items with the official naming convention your talking about, almost all the Nadhin items on the wiki have rarity and level suffix's. Here look for yourself [Items with Essence 600 items into list]. I am well aware of the scalability of these items, that's why I am updating all of them. Feel free to add rows to the item tables I built for each individual level and please populate them with the correct data. I don't have all that data, that's why I built the mostly empty tables.

As for the Google searches, this sort of thing happens all the time with wiki updates, in time the search engines will find the new pages I have built and the older pages, no longer used, will drop down the prioritized list of found pages until their no longer present. This exact same thing happens all the time with renamed items. It happened when we rebuilt the Legendary Items and Essence. Updating LID is your thing, I have no control over 2nd party tools or how they are updated. You have scripts that update LID or used too, so I would encourage you to use them and update your LID version.

I appreciate your enthusiasm and admire your tenacity if you would like to help with this project please offer up any solutions. So, having looked at what I'm doing, I hope you are now convinced that I am going to use the standard you described. I want to make this update user friendly. It seems like your real problem is that LID doesn't know if a item page is deleted or not. So it just grabs any item pages it finds. You might want to update LID so it ignore all the delete item pages. There are probably thousands of deleted item pages LID is picking up. --Matthew.zellmer (talk) 14:54, 11 August 2016 (UTC)

But for example, "Light Nadhin Gauntlets" which is the item 1879313786 for lvl 100 and 1879311280 for the scalable item is actually broken Item:Light Nadhin Gauntlets doesn't exist anymore in LOTRO-Wiki. Thanks guys. This is a decent solution and something I touched on earlier but I called it a "Nadhin parent page". I think this is where we were headed eventually. Looks like Tharondir built disambiguation item pages for all the Nadhin items. Castorix please note this isn't the exact solution you were after, as the page that pulls up in Google or LID will just have links in it, you will need to click a link on that page to get the more specific item details you were after. --Matthew.zellmer (talk) 13264, 12 August 2016 (UTC)
