Trait tree names?

Does anyone know whether there's a consensus on what to call the three war-steed trait trees?

  • The dev diary referred to them as "Combat branch", "Defense branch", and "Movement branch", but I've never seen them referred to that way anywhere else. It might have been internal terms, or maybe just that person's names for them.
  • The Lotro site expansion page ties them to the discipline names Red Dawn, Rohirrim, and Riddermark. I was going to use those terms but hesitated, because it might be confusing. You don't have to be using that discipline for the traits to apply - only the capstone for each branch is discipline-specific. And the disciplines vary widely in their effect on different classes - they don't always correspond to what these traits do.
  • I'm not aware if there are any terms used for the three trait trees in-game.

On this page I called them simply Red, Blue, and Yellow, since that's easy to understand, but it looks a little lame. Any thoughts? -- Elinnea (talk) 23:51, 7 November 2012 (EST)

I think using the color name is a good method. It directly relates the active skill icon appearance back to the tree. The disciplines are also color codes - I tend to think of the colors instead of trying to remember the name. We should always give the full discipline name and the branch name somewhere on our pages, to help remind folks, and to help everyone (including myself) associate those names with the colors. If we abbreviate to the color name, I think more people will know what we mean than if we use the discipline or branch names.
This is a smaller case of the problem with class traits. I don't bother trying to learn the names of each sub-section of class traits (27 different names), just the colors.

Update 11 - May 2013

From the Contribuitor's corner:

U11 unvails a Mounted Companion for Lore Masters

I just now encountered the Mounted Companion for the Lore Master... It will take some writing up as it is not obvious where/how one activates it. Similarly, I don't know if the other "Pet masters" get mounted companions or not, I've only seen reference to the Lore Master's companion ...

It appears that this is related to:
"Mounted Combat Update
Mounted Combat receives a significant update, with the yellow trait tree being integrated into the base War-steed for optimal maneuverability. In place of the previous movement trait tree, each class will get their own specific yellow tree, with boost and skills tailored to each role."

I'll write up a page for the Mounted Combat stuff, and we can figure out what to do with it as time goes on.... hopefully others with "Pet-masters" can fill in and elaborate for them.

Basically, as I'm working this I'm aware that there are other "pet-masters" out there, and that similar "Yellow" trait trees must exist for them.

With that in mind, I discovered that at leas two of the traits are now duplicated, but with different texts, and apparently different effects based on class. Intimidate and Dash being the first two encountered. Consequently I'm planning to create [[Intimidate (LM)]] and [[Dash (LM)]], etc... both of which are prototyped on my page. The basic question becomes -- does that naming convention make sense. I have already uploaded the icons using the convention: "LM-iconname-icon.png" in Category:War-steed Trait Icons. Assuming again, that there will be similar "differences" for other Pets in the future... or possibly already for the other classes as the "Yellow Tree" mechanic Turbine has adopted appears to be the way of the future. So far, the release notes on Bullroarer have not be particularly "illuminating" on the subject, and there is no Dev diary. Maybe we will see something by Monday. The only "tease" so far is : Update 11 - Volume III, Book 10 Quest Notes

Meep, I'm behind the times! I didn't make it into Bullroarer for this update, and on live servers I only have two classes at level to obtain war-steeds, so my perspective is unfortunately limited.
I'm not overly fond of a naming convention LM-something-or-other, just because it makes it a little less convenient to search by the name of the trait than if it were Something-or-other-LM or Something-or-other (LM). But the search function seems pretty thorough now, so that's not a huge issue. Maybe we should create some sub-categories of the trait icons, for each class. It has been a major theme in their discussion, offering unique skills and traits for each class, and they'll probably keep moving in that direction.
I did enjoy the official Developer's Diary. I like when they discuss their design process. I'll try to collect some information and revamp this page when I can, but don't let that stop you from updating things if I keep on dilly-dallying. -- Elinnea (talk) 09:43, 18 May 2013 (EDT)

The new war steed level cap is 60

But I don't know what the point distribution is in detail. Seems like it's 1 point for levels 51 through 55 so far as I can tell. I'll add info as I level up, but it's taking a long time. Level 55 was about 11,167,000 points, level 56 is 11,778,094. 10,022,079 level 53
