Different variants?

I am seeing an additional sentence at the end of the second paragraph of the bestowal dialogue: '... and deserves tribute. Was he not, Elf?' This seems to indicate that this quest has a Dwarven and an Elven version, although the difference might be nothing more than the absence or presence of this one small sentence. Of course it is also possible that the dialogue was extended with the sentence 'Was he not, <race>?' -- CementHold (talk) 17:44, 3 August 2012 (EDT)

There are a few other quests that have variant dialogue based on the character's race, so it wouldn't surprise me if there was an extra sentence in there just for the elves. I wish I could remember some other examples to give you some ideas for formatting, but I don't see any reason not to go ahead and make your best guess and add it in; just include an <!-- HTML comment --> or description in the edit summary so that anyone who follows after can confirm or update as appropriate. With regards to formatting, my reference is Intro: Elrond's Errand. But repeating the entire section for such a small difference seems a little bit excessive. Although, now that I think about it, I may be making a mountain out of a molehill. CementHold (talk) 18:20, 3 August 2012 (EDT)
I like documenting the little variations in quests due to race or class. They're tricky to track down, but often amusing or interesting. If there's just a small difference, I usually put the relevant line in the Walkthrough & Notes section. I'm not finding a good example off-hand, but here's one that compiles all the possible variations in text: Quest:Instance: The Mirror of Galadriel. If I look through the page's history and am not sure, I leave a note on the talk page, like this one: Quest talk:Chapter 6: Cousin Brogur. Sometimes having the variants side-by-side in the quest text looks fine too. It depends on the quest, really, and an editor's common sense. :) -- Elinnea (talk) 18:39, 3 August 2012 (EDT)
I certainly wouldn't repeat the entire paragraph just for one line, but perhaps something like (to Elves, he adds:) or (to Elves only:) '...and deserves tribute, etc.'
Obviously contingent upon us confirming that it really is race-specific. :-P
And whoo! The notes on that Galadriel quest are awesome; I love how they're foreshadowing events down the line. Sethladan 19:54, 3 August 2012 (EDT)
I've realized that I have a relatively recent (at most one month old) quest log entry for a Dwarf, so I can confirm that the sentence is missing from the Dwarf version, and this is the only difference. So I will see if I can get something along Sethladan's suggestion to compact the entry. I'm not sure which kind of formatting would look best for this, so a little experimentation first.
'... and deserves tribute.' (To Elves, he adds:) 'Was he not, Elf?'
'... and deserves tribute. (To Elves, he adds:) Was he not, Elf?'
'... and deserves tribute. (to Elves, he adds:) Was he not, Elf?'
These decisions are so much harder than checking the spelling. :) -- CementHold (talk) 05:15, 4 August 2012 (EDT)
Yes, or even ...
'... and deserves tribute.' ('Was he not, Elf?' - Elves only)
... which reduces the in-lined text even more. Kind of an "editors note" you may find in some literature. But as you said, those are hard decisions and most of the times they are from case to case, we cannot really have a rule because the contexts vary and the solutions are better flexible and based on, in no particular order: clarity, unambiguity, least impact on readability (as in least reader disturbance), correctness, and more, all weighed with my favourite 'pragmatism'.

PS. Actually, you can also do as Elin did with the vocation quests, save the flavours in either the walkthrough box (for smaller differences) or topmost in the talk-page, and add a note under the quest section such as "Elves, see the Walkthrough". DS.
