Bestowal dialogue

"My tale begins more than a thousand years ago, when the watch on Mordor had already begun to fail..."

Background

Annoth desires to tell you the tale of his ancestors, the Thandrim, who kept watch on Mordor from fortresses within the Black Land for more than a thousand years.

Objective 1

  • Talk to Annoth during his recounting of the tale

It is important to Annoth that you hear the tale of the Thandrim.

Annoth:
'I have heard tales of the bravery of the Thandrim for all my life: they were a shining light of Gondor's goodness, blazing within the shadows of Mordor. See them now, where they stand, defiant and bold'

Objective 2

  • Listen to Annoth's account of the Thandrim

It is important to Annoth that you hear the tale of the Thandrim.

Annoth says, I can see it so clearly, Valamar.
Annoth says, Durthand, the Black Shield, proud fortress of the Thandrim!
Annoth says, It has been assailed many times, but still it stands in defiance of Mordor!
Annoth says, I see the features of Men whose names my family honours to this day.
Annoth says, Bánor the Steadfast, who never speaks falsely. Nanhad the Quick, a fighter of unmatched speed.
Annoth says, And most clearly of all: Halannon, from whom I trace my lineage.
Halannon says, We must not despair! That is the weapon of the enemy!
Annoth says, In Gondor today he is known by another name.
Annoth says, The Survivor.
Annoth says, One year before the fall of Durthand, assassins creep into the towers at the Morannon.
Annoth says, Every man of Gondor within the Morannon is slain.
Nanhad says, Bánor! Halannon!
Nanhad says, We are cut off from Gondor! No one can reach us!
Halannon says, Then we... we are alone.
Annoth says, The morale of the defenders flags with these tidings.
Annoth says, King Eärnil tries to send reinforcements to Durthand, but they cannot pass the Black Gate.
Annoth says, The Thandrim do not know this, of course. They believe themselves abandoned.
Annoth says, Food stores run low, and hundreds fall to starvation.
Annoth says, There are... distasteful rumours.
Annoth says, But I do not believe them.
Annoth says, I have tarried overlong in the telling of my story. I will hasten the tale.
Annoth says, By the onset of winter, few only among the Thandrim survive.
Annoth says, That is when the forces of Mordor come once again to Durthand.

Thandrim Defender says, Up above! The flying beast returns!

Objective 3

  • Listen to Annoth's account of the Thandrim

It is important to Annoth that you hear the tale of the Thandrim.

Annoth:
'Three only there are, but they are figures out of nightmare. Two are the beings we have come to know as the Nazgul, the Ringwraiths of Sauron.
'The third may have been a Man, once, but through the foul sorceries of his master in the Dark Tower, he has become something else, he is Ugrukhôr, the Captain of the Pit. He comes now to Durthand with an offer.'

Objective 4

  • Listen to Annoth's account of the Thandrim

It is important to Annoth that you hear the tale of the Thandrim.

Halannon says, What do you want, Ugrukhôr? State your business and go.
Ugrukhôr says, Where are the rest of your men? This cannot be all that remain!
Halannon says, There are more within the keep. What do you want?
Ugrukhôr says, These men can barely stand! Your supply of food must be gone, or nearly so.
Ugrukhôr says, I am moved to pity.
Ugrukhôr says, You cannot think to hold this fortress any longer.
Ugrukhôr says, Allow me to grant you this boon, in recognition of your proud defiance.
Ugrukhôr says, Surrender to me now.
Bánor says, Ha! You are a fool if you think we will.
Ugrukhôr says, I might come back in a day with the same offer.
Ugrukhôr says, I might come back in a month, or in a year.
Ugrukhôr says, Will you still be alive to accept my offer?
Ugrukhôr says, Surrender to me now, and I will grant you safe passage back through the Black Gate.
Ugrukhôr says, The fortress is lost. Grant me this place, and you need not perish in its defence.

Objective 5

  • Listen to Annoth's account of the Thandrim

It is important to Annoth that you hear the tale of the Thandrim.

Annoth:
'Should they have refused? Every man there knew Ugrukhôr for a liar, but the pit of despair into which they had fallen cound not be surmounted. They had been hardy men, once, but a year of starvation and fear must have taken its toll. No doubt their fear was mad stronger by the presence of the Nazgul, but I can understand the draw of even the faintest of hopes in that dark pit.
'The Thandrim surrendered to Ugrukhôr. Durthand was lost.'

Objective 6

  • Listen to Annoth's account of the Thandrim

It is important to Annoth that you hear the tale of the Thandrim.

Note: the sceen has now shifted to North Ithilien.
Annoth:
'The Thandrim cast aside their weapons, and beneath Ugrukhôr watchful gaze they marc to the Morannon, now held by the Orcs. The gate opens. Sixty men, all that remained of the Thandrim, pass through the Gate.
'At a signal from Ugrukhôr, the archers on the walls fill the air with death.'

Objective 7

  • Listen to Annoth's account of the Thandrim

It is important to Annoth that you hear the tale of the Thandrim.

Annoth says, All of the Thandrim were slain, save one.
Halannon says, Why, you vile creature? Why do this?
Ugrukhôr says, They passed the Black Gate unharmed.
Ugrukhôr says, I promised nothing afterward.
Halannon says, Why let me live?
Ugrukhôr says, Go to your White City. Tell them a new Captain rules the Pit!

Objective 8

  • Listen to Annoth's account of the Thandrim

It is important to Annoth that you hear the tale of the Thandrim.

Annoth:
'That is the story of the Thandrim, <name>. Only Halannon survived, and his account is kept in the archives of Minas Tirirth. It is Trenarn Bronad, the Survivor's Tale.'
Annoth says, I say the tale is ended, but that is not truly so, Valamar.
Annoth says, Halannon's descendants, the Sons of the Survivor, did not forget the Thandrim.
Annoth says, Neither did Ugrukhôr forget them.
Annoth says, The years and the centuries passed.
Annoth says, From time to time, scouts from the White City would find that Ugrukhôr had been in Gondor.
Annoth says, He had left one of the cloven shields of the Thandrim behind.
Annoth says, They were reminders of his cruelty.
Annoth says, Even now, a thousand years later, he leaves them still.
