Elendil the Tall
The Shores of Evendim

Evendim is a region located between the Shire and the northern Forochel, and west of The North Downs. A vast region dominated by the majestic lake from which it gets its name, Lake Evendim is also known as Nenuial which is Sindarin for "Lake of Twilight". Here the dwindling numbers of Dúnedain have struggled long years to honour their heritage.

Little is said about Evendim but Elendil came here no earlier than Second Age 3320 and founded the northern Kingdom of Arnor, while his two sons founded Gondor in the south. Ten High Kings ruled out of Annúminas, the shining jewel on the southern shore of Nenuial. However, Amlaith never became the eleventh King but removed to Fornost and Arnor was split in three.

The ancient abandoned city of Annúminas -- the former capital of the Kingdom of Arnor -- is well known amongst the Free Peoples. For according to the legends, amidst its ruins lay great wealth and powerful artefacts now threatened by evil creatures and the nefarious forces lurking in Angmar. The Wardens of Annúminas have set up a smaller camp within the ruins and a large camp at Tinnudir, trying to press back the Enemy and secure the tombs of old.

History

Nothing is known about this area before the days of Elendil, who escaped the Downfall of Númenor and landed near river Lhûn and befriended Gil-galad. His two sons got separated from him under a great storm and landed south, where they soon founded Gondor. Elendil explored the land of Eriador and found Evendim, where he settled down at the southern shores of Lake Evendim and built Annúminas. This happened no earlier than Second Age 3320, probably very soon thereafter.

Both Elendil and his sons, Isildur and Anárion, had brought precious items with them from Númenor. Some of these were the Palantíri, the "seeing stones", with which they could communicate over the vast distances between them. Thus Isildur sought refuge with his father when Sauron charged at his home city, and soon Elendil, Gil-galad, and a large host of Dúnedain knights and warriors travelled south for long years of warfare. More of those tales are told elsewhere, but here we may say that Elendil never returned, and neither did his sons succeed him at the throne but Isildur's youngest son, Valandil, eventually ascended the throne in Third Age 10 to become the third High King of Arnor.

Ten High Kings ruled out of Annúminas, but rather soon the numbers of the Dúnedain begun to dwindle, and the decay of Annúminas, Evendim, and the Northern Kingdom at large, was apparent. When Eärendur, the tenth High King, died in III 861, his son Amlaith could not overcome brotherly disputes and Arnor was split in three kingdoms: Amlaith founded Arthedain, and his unnamed brothers founded Cardolan and Rhudaur respectively. Amlaith removed to Fornost and the decay accelerated.

The Sceptre of Annúminas, however, came in safe keep of Elrond in Rivendell, where it remains until today. The Palatír of Annúminas was lost when Arvedui escaped Fornost and drowned in the ice masses of Forochel in III 1975. With Arvedui the Arnorian kingdom definitely ceased to exist; at this point was founded the Rangers of the North (or the Dúnedain of the North) which has since been led by a Chieftain. In the Epic tale of Lotro, the Chieftain is Aragorn and visions of the future whisper he will again ascend as High King of Arnor, and restore Evendim, Annúminas, and every other place of Eriador to their former glory.
