Recommand that we add or revamp the categories of stubs

I would like to provide a link to the Help:Contents page for pages that need attention. I started to do that with the {{help}} tag, but that tag is past it's prime in usefulness and I would like to piggy back on the stub tags. I would go ahead and add a few more categories but I want to make sure that I haven't missed any other methods on how list content challenged pages. --Hinney 18:11, 28 April 2007 (PDT)

each of the stubs adds a [sub]category, all the existing ones are listed under Category:Stubs, I also added Category:Things to do which can be extended with more subcategories and hints as to what needs to be done... --Xander 22:59, 28 April 2007 (PDT)

Updated Tags

(Discussion moved from Talk: Main Page)

Hey, just out of curiosity, do you think it would be possible to update the tags (such as {{Beta}}) to be a little more "in character"? For example Wookiepedia has a Star Wars movie quote preceding their warnings. Several examples of this are on Wookiepedia's template page. -- Gestrid (previously Super3588) (talk) 16:26, 1 June 2016 (UTC)

Cool idea, I would support that. But would also like to hear more opinions on the matters. --Tharondir (talk) 17:19, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
I also think it's a good idea.
Do you have already something specific in mind?
Mogafi (talk) 00:45, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
Sorry, I don't. Even if I did, I'm not well-versed enough in wikitext to make them. -- Gestrid (previously Super3588) (talk) 04:06, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
Well, I've been running some tests in order to do this. Check them out here: User:Tharondir/Templates.
Basically, all I did was add flavor text taken from various quests and a matching image to the existing tags. If anyone has an idea on how to improve them, please feel free to edit the page I created. --Tharondir (talk) 10:46, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
Maybe use quotes from the movies or books if possible? Not everyone's played through all the quests and may not get the reference. -- Gestrid (previously Super3588) (talk) 10:55, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
Yeah, maybe that would be better. Any suggestions? --Tharondir (talk) 12:13, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
I haven't seen the movies in a while, and I'm taking a summer class at my college, so I don't have any suggestions right now. I'll be home in 2 weeks. Perhaps try IMDb. They have a place where people can put up their favorite movie quotes. I would link it directly, but I'm on my mobile device. -- Gestrid (previously Super3588) (talk) 14:54, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
Interesting idea!
As for quotes from the movies vs quotes from in-game -- keep in mind that there is a great deal in the Movies which is NOT in the game or in the Books! Peter Jackson
Personally, I think that quotes from in-game are much more appropriate as that is what this Wiki is all about. This Wiki really has no interest in other sources. We are not a generalized Tolkien reference, but a reference for the game.
Keep in mind that you can find all of the tags at: Article Management Tags and Article Management Tags/Display
I've gone ahead and made a couple of them live. Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 15:23, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
Should we move the discussion to User_talk:Tharondir/Templates so we don't clutter this page up too much? -- Gestrid (previously Super3588) (talk) 15:33, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
Also, I tried using this image (freshly uploaded) on the Beta tag in User:Tharondir/Templates, but the text apparently doesn't auto-align to the side of the image. Any suggestions? -- Gestrid (previously Super3588) (talk) 15:43, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
Indentation getting out of hand :)
I would assume that the simple answer is -- the image is too big. Re-upload the image at 32x32 pixels and see what happens. (I forget what the requirements are for the ambox template.
Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 15:54, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
Note that the tag labeled "Outdated" is actually the tag "Obsolete". Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 15:57, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
Hey, I created a new tag called {{Only Beta}} using the {{Template:Beta}} tag as a template. I created the tag mainly for use with the page The Eyes and Guard Tavern, and it's live there right now. I created the tag because, when I edited the custom tag we had there, Galadriel's quote would show up in the TOC. However, now that I've created the tag and added it to the page, the quote still shows up. This reveals what could be a problem for all of the updated tags if the quotes continue to show up in the TOC wherever one of those tags are used. How do we avoid this?
On a related note, the page is not showing up in the tag's Category:Stubs/Only Beta page. How do I fix this? -- Gestrid (previously Super3588) (talk) 16:53, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
The original ambox images are nominally 40x40 pixels those that Tharondir used are standard LOTRO-wiki icons which are 32x32. The image you were trying to use is much larger - 236x147. Also, a standard icon is a .png file, while you were using a .jpg image. Both size and file-type are important to the MediaWiki engine.
As usual when working on something like this, one finds all sorts of odds and ends that need cleaning up. In addition to the fact that there are both Obsolete and Outdated tages, the tag reeferred to as "Clean-up" is actually "Wikifi". Sigh.
Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 17:03, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
While we work on updating tags, we can also work on renaming some tags and deleting others (provided there's an adequate replacement, like your "Obsolete" vs. "Outdated" example). Also, any answer to my question above about the new tag I created and its problems? -- Gestrid (previously Super3588) (talk) 17:38, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
Also, two more things:
1. It's confirmed that we do have some sort of problem with those quotes. See Category:The North Downs Quest Chains's Table of Contents as an example.
2. I've updated User:Tharondir/Templates's version of the Beta tag. How does it look? -- Gestrid (previously Super3588) (talk) 18:07, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
Hi, again! Found a way to exclude headings (which MediaWiki seems to think the quotes are) from showing up in the TOC. Unfortunately, it requires the installation of a plugin into the MediaWiki software. Here are the details (and be sure to look under where it says UPDATE): https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Section#Making_a_heading_that_does_not_show_up_in_ToC. -- Gestrid (previously Super3588) (talk) 18:14, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
Based on the mod you linked, the problem has noting to do with the quotes themselves, but with the inclusion of HTML. -- "HTML headings now show up in the TOC no matter what;". Getting rid of the <H3> tags solves the issue.
Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 19:46, 3 June 2016 (UTC)

I've been keeping up with this throughout the day today, and I noticed when you updated the Construction tag. When I saw it worked, I immediately applied it to the new tag I created. The fix worked. Once we finish applying it to all the tags on the Tharondir's page (to avoid accidental copy-and paste issues) and update the changed templates, we should be good to go. -- Gestrid (previously Super3588) (talk) 19:54, 3 June 2016 (UTC)

All looks good. Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 23:45, 3 June 2016 (UTC)

Good job guys!

The new tags are looking great! Now onto replacing those placeholder images I chose... --Tharondir (talk) 08:37, 4 June 2016 (UTC)

Thanks! What do you think of the image I changed the Beta tag to on your test page? -- Gestrid (previously Super3588) (talk) 13:09, 4 June 2016 (UTC)
I like it! --Tharondir (talk) 07:10, 5 June 2016 (UTC)
Good! It's now live!
Also, something seems to be wrong with Template:Only Beta. The pages with its tag are getting added to Category:Stubs/Beta instead of Category:Stubs/Only Beta. I've tried everything I could think of and can't think of anything else that could be wrong. Could someone please take a look at it? -- Gestrid (previously Super3588) (talk) 22:34, 5 June 2016 (UTC)
???? It is only used for one page -- the The Eyes and Guard Tavern, and that page is in Category:Stubs/Only Beta. :)
You must have had a non-printing character in the parameter "nocat=" of the second tag. (You have it at the top and bottom of the page).
I just copied and pasted the insertion at the top to the bottom, and it now works.
Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 22:52, 5 June 2016 (UTC)
Thank you. I don't see how this caused it to appear in Category:Stubs/Beta, though. But it's fixed! -- Gestrid (previously Super3588) (talk) 23:04, 5 June 2016 (UTC)
"Obsolete" vs. "Outdated"
Both of them are fine. The first is for stuff that is no longer in the game; the second is for stuff that is still in the game but has changed and the article not updated.
In terms of wiki, obsolete also goes with the change to remove all/most links to it and remove all categories from it; outdated doesn't.
Humm... Speaking of which, this reminds me that I need to check something...
Mogafi (talk) 23:34, 5 June 2016 (UTC)
In that case, it might be better to update what they say so as to better differentiate between them. -- Gestrid (previously Super3588) (talk) 02:19, 6 June 2016 (UTC)
I've edited this page to make it a bit better explained. The documentation of the templates themselves looks fine; I have a bias because I already know what they do but still they look fine.
