Bywater Pool
Type: Lake
Region: The Shire
Area: Hobbiton-Bywater
Location: [31.1S, 69.6W]

Mudbottom Lake is a landmark within Hobbiton-Bywater, in the Shire. [31.1S, 69.6W]

This lake is probably much better known as Bywater Pool, or just the Pool, and is a thicker point of The Water where it flows past Bywater and a northern contributory stream ends. A narrow trail from Bywater leads to the hobbit holes on its northern shore, passing a perfect spot for fishing.

During many Festivals, and especially during the Farmers Faire, the fishing shelter and the bridge at the western side of the pool is bubbling with activities. And fishing of course.

Lore

"...once more the night of Mordor closed over them, through all (Sam's) thoughts there came the memory of water; and every brook or stream or fount that he had ever seen, under green willow-shades or twinkling in the sun, danced and rippled for his torment behind the blindness of his eyes. He felt the cool mud about his toes as he paddled in the Pool at Bywater with Jolly Cotton and Tom and Nibs, and their sister Rosie. 'But that was years ago,' he sighed, 'and far away. The way back, if there is one, goes past the Mountain.'" — The Return of the King
Young hobbits from all over the region has always been playing and swimming in "the Pool", loving the feel of mud under their toes. As far as records tell this was a playing ground since way before Sam, Tom, Jolly, Rosie, and Nick used to hang out here. And these days Nibs and Marigold might have a swim when the season is right.
