Item Template

Hi! Thanks for your contributions to the wiki. I notice you've added several items recently as pages with just plain text. We have a New Item function that can help you make an item page that looks really nice, without having to do the fancy formatting yourself. It's over on the left sidebar under "Create Article". If you can use that template when you add a new item, it will be less work for others to clean up later. Static Index Deed pages

After you posted a comment Lotro-Wiki.com:Deeds#Work in Progress I stopped removing the static index deed pages. I think they are useful but redundant since there are all these other pages that capture the same info in addition to the individual deed pages. Lets work together! Its easy to bring the pages back using the page history and a revert. Maybe we can direct people that goto the region deed to another page that holds the deeds by type e.g. Virtue, Virtue Deeds, Virtues by Region which is what most people I think are after. Deeds are provided by region ON these pages. Maybe there is a way we can get both. Matthew.zellmer (talk) 18:37, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

I'll agree there's a lot of redundancy, specifically in deeds and in the wiki generally. Virtues are probably the number one most sought-after rewards for regional deeds (especially in light of Update 13), but reputation, Turbine points, and even titles may also be valued rewards. It may just be me, but I really liked the regional deed pages the way they were.

FWIW, the trick is to avoid having the information duplicated in multiple places. I.e. so that updates only need to be done in one place. We have a huge number of pages where information is "out of date" because it was changed in one location, and there is/was no link (obvious or otherwise) to the fact that the same information exists in other locations on the Wiki. Took a look at Talk:Virtues_by_Region and added my thoughts.

I am going to suggest we add to the base region pages a new section called Deeds (some already have them e.g.Angmar). This new deed section will be a transclusion from a region deed index page. This will solve the regional deed page visibility issue. My hope is that everyone will see the deeds and fix them when out of date. We will have to re-wire the current NON-region deed pages (e.g. e.g. Virtue, Virtue Deeds, Virtues by Region Determination Deeds, Empathy Deeds, Fidelity Deeds etc.) that have hard-coded region data in them so they are transclusioned as well from the regional deed pages. This new region deed index page should be a true summery index page and only provide the name of the deed, perhaps its type (slayer etc) and its reward. Not a whole copy of what's needed to fulfill the deed. That kind of detailed info should be in the deed itself. What do you think? Matthew.zellmer (talk) 23:17, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

I would note that the boilerplate for a Region page does provide for the transclusion of Regional Tasks and Deeds.

<categorytree depth=1><Region Deeds></categorytree> <- will display a tree with the first level already open

I would have to look at each individual Regional/Area pages to see which do and which don't -- the Wiki is NOT noted for its consistency :)

Assuming that the <region> Deeds pages actually exist (as they should) then transcluding them into the region pages is trivial.

However, "Deeds" have always been an "afterthought for people adding pages to the Wiki, so they may not exist.

Generally speaking, the "hierarchy" of page creation for a new area has been...

1. Area page
2. Quests
3. Main town
4. Main town NPCs
5. Settlements
6. Creatures
7. Locations and everything else

• Deeds
• Titles
• Factions

Individual authors naturally go where their interest lead them. However, the basic pattern is -- I'll record "stuff" as I Level-up.
