Template talk:Quest Mathom

Seth, please motivate why this is obsolete. Superficially it does the same thing as Reward, but Reward does not add to the category Category:The Mathom Society Reputation Quests as this template does. And using Quest Rep will not include the Mathom icon. The item is still given and must be used in order to obtain the reputation, while Quest Rep quests give reputation right away, automatically. Hence I disagree and believe we should retain this template.

There are actually quite a lot of quests giving this item as a reward, not just within the Shire. Thoughts? -- Zimoon (talk) 09:21, 12 March 2012 (EDT)

It was probably pretty egoistic of me to unilaterally list this as obsolete back when I did, but I was probably the only template monster running around at that point and so I started making all kinds of decisions, heh.
My reasoning was that a quest providing a Gift Mathom as a reward wasn't necessarily a quest that gave Mathom Society reputation automatically - two separate means of gaining reputation. This logic hinges on, obviously, how narrowly we define something as a "reputation quest." I originally figured that only quests which gave instant faction should be called reputation quests, but the description at Category:The Mathom Society Reputation Quests specifically includes Gift Mathoms, sooo...leaped before I looked, I guess.
Part of me says that "Mathoms are rewards and should be called that, end of story!" but I learned a lot of pragmatism recently (wink), so if it's agreed that quests giving these items should be considered Mathom Society rep quests also, then one template (this one) that covers both item and categorization makes more sense.
This can be de-obsoleted now. :) Sethladan 02:16, 15 June 2012 (EDT)
Thanks, I completely agree that this is a bastard as it gives an item-reward that may be used for reputation, one of these things that is not clear-cut how to deal with. Retaining the template at least gives a way to track which quests to hunt down for reputation. And I 110% believes that our visitors are intelligent and that our "pragmatism" is appreciated when it coincides with common sense and intuition ;)
