Template talk:Obsolete

From Lotro-Wiki.com

Put this together really quickly for use on obsolete quests, items, and the like that we might want to keep around. Formal documentation coming soon, and template subject to revision.

Takes optional parameters patchlink and type - patchlink should be a wikilink to the page (on LOTRO-Wiki) that describes the relevant update if known. Will replace "ongoing changes in-game" with that link. Type can be any plain text ("quest," "item," etc.) and will be displayed instead of "page" - e.g., "this quest is now obsolete," "this item is now obsolete," "this bagel is now obsolete." Categorization: "item" and "quest" now supported, will add the page to Category:Obsolete Items and Category:Obsolete Quests respectively.
Unintentional effect of my categorization attempt: pages not tagged as "quest" or "item" go into Category:Obsolete, which actually already exists! The things you find by accident... Sethladan 14:40, 19 February 2011 (EST)

Fun issue when included on templates

It's rare to have an obsolete template, so this bug probably doesn't show, but it can cause a waterfall effect if the template outside the noinclude wiki tags. --Lotroadmin (talk) 19:50, 24 July 2016 (UTC)
If that's the case, can you check the other templates Technical 13 has updated? Particularly the ones on Article Management Tags/Display? I would, but I don't speak template. -- Gestrid (talk) 19:54, 24 July 2016 (UTC)
It's all should be good or will be good. The MW software has the ability to spawn jobs to update pages that use templates and will slowly fix it. There's not a lot of pages with plain link, so it will be dealt with swiftly, otherwise you can use the "Purge" feature on the page dropdown menu. --Lotroadmin (talk) 19:58, 24 July 2016 (UTC)

would like to update the template

Anyone object to me adding a couple more Obsolete auto-categories? I would like to add auto-categories for obsolete titles, skirmish stuff, locations, crafting and perhaps a couple other ones. Please respond here I will check. Matthew.zellmer (talk) 18:28, 14 September 2016 (UTC)

What would this do, exactly? Would it add templates to Category:Obsolete Templates, articles to Category:Obsolete Articles, etc., am I correct? -- Gestrid (talk) 18:49, 14 September 2016 (UTC)
If so, seems fine by me. We should probably have a conversation about what we want to keep and what not, though. Feeling we might be going a bit overboard sometimes. --Ravanel (talk) 22:14, 14 September 2016 (UTC)
My idea is just to add a couple more categories under Category:Obsolete. I am just going to dump about a dozen pages into the main Obsolete category and thought it might be a better idea to group them that's all. Matthew.zellmer (talk) 19:17, 15 September 2016 (UTC)
Seems alright with me, just as long as you're sure you won't break anything. -- Gestrid (talk) 21:36, 15 September 2016 (UTC)
I have a test version of the template code User:Matthew.zellmer/Template:Obsolete Test1 and what it does User:Matthew.zellmer/Template:Obsolete Test1/test subject in my home directory. It really only adds a line or 2 to the template. This should allow us to keep the pages so they are still found by search engines like Google and Bing but will also let the reader know the information is outdated and where to find the new stuff. Matthew.zellmer (talk) 17:54, 16 September 2016 (UTC)
Looks okay to me, but I'm not an expert on template coding. -- Gestrid (talk) 21:37, 16 September 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for your interest and comments. Going to update the template today. Please note this will just add a couple more auto-categories to the template and not change any of the current behavior. Matthew.zellmer (talk) 16:22, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

Obsolete Skirmish Loot

Looking for some confirmation that all the skirmish Raid lvl 75 and lvl 85 loot is no longer in the game. I see a lot of this equipment in the obsolete Skirmish Campaigns page histories, Skirmish Loot (Level 85) and have attempted to save it in the Skirmish Rewards#Raid (12) page. Does anyone know if its still in the game? Matthew.zellmer (talk) 17:06, 17 September 2016 (UTC)

To be honest, I have no clue. I did notice they removed level 65 gear from the loot table of scaled 3-mans that used to be played at level 65 cap, so it is something they have done historically. --Ravanel (talk) 17:15, 17 September 2016 (UTC)
Update: I did 3 level 75 skirmishes on raid level, and we didn't get any level 75 equipment to drop. Since we were only with two players (of which one level 105) and the items were rare drops, this isn't real proof yet that they cannot, though. --Ravanel (talk) 10:33, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
PS We did get a Worn Symbol of Celebrimbor to drop. --Ravanel (talk) 10:35, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
All this old lvl 75 and 85 loot was completely removed from skirmishes back to U12 and replaced with those loot tables we have today. Let me remind you that raid skirmishes gear was (and actually is) available for roll, it wasn't "auto loot" (neither it's today). Thus gear drop from raid skirmishes has nothing to do with number of players :) --Phindecano (talk) 01:25, 19 September 2016 (UTC)
Turbine's choice when (and why) to auto loot and when not to auto loot continues to mystify me, so I've just stopped trying to keep track. Since they changed it for instances, it wouldn't have surprised me if the same would've happened to skirmishes. Thanks for the confirmation of our suspicions. --Ravanel (talk) 08:22, 19 September 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for all the input. I am going to remove the Skirmish Loot (Level 85) and Level 75 drops in question. They are saved in several other locations anyway. New version is here Skirmish Rewards. Matthew.zellmer (talk) 15:54, 19 September 2016 (UTC)
On a somewhat related note: I recently bumped into some Delete Page tags on skirmish campaign pages. When I looked at "What links here", I found that the obsolete skirmish campaign related pages are a bit of a mess, with lots of (potential) red links. I'm tidying it up a bit. I'm keeping the obsolete items: they are still technically in the game (in the inventory of people who acquired them back in the day - I own some myself). I'm transferring all the info from the individual campaign pages to the Skirmish Campaigns page, so they can be deleted as requested. There are a lot of potential red links out there so it will take a while, but I thought I'd give a heads up. :) --Ravanel (talk) 11:11, 12 September 2017 (UTC)
