When Area equals Region

I added so that if Area equals Region only region is displayed. Does this ever happen? Rarely! But it did in Frostbluff for the few landmarks we have there. Notice now that Frostbluff in itself is not a region but an area. Whether to select to display region or area is up to you guys, both are find imho but just one should be displayed. Perhaps you know of other locations where this happens and that can guide us, are there? Either way, the "region" parameter adds to the "Region Landmarks" category, but that in itself is unbound to whatever it really is a region or area. Zimoon 14:42, 20 December 2011 (EST)

Points of Interest

With the parameter pointsOfInterest it is now possible to use this template also for location pages that are not official landmarks. Not many such locations exist, most locations that are mentioned in Tolkien's works are also properly flagged in game but if not this addition to the template may be used. Another use case is for a location where one or more NPCs are gathered and they are somehow involved in quests or other game-play; commonly a small camp with one or more NPCs.

Please use with care. The location should indeed reach some fussy level of interest for a wider audience.

Other Locations

I have not seen a discussion about it, but there is currently inconsistency in how to threat Landmarks.
From the Landmark page:

Note that red flags on the World Map are only approximately located at the coordinates they indicate. Also note that not all Landmarks or Points of Interest are represented by red flags on the World Map, but they always read their names under the mini-map. However, Lotro-Wiki provides articles for some exciting and astonishing locations which are not 'officially acknowledged' as landmarks; this is noted by another type of icon at their info-box and they are categorized under 'Other Locations'.

However, this template was changed to allow several types of landmarks and does not categorize under "Other Locations" anymore, nor have the 'exciting location' icon.
The quoted text actually describe 3 types of landmarks:

  1. Landmarks with map icon
  2. Landmarks without map icon but name
  3. User named landmarks

Having all landmarks treated the same can be confusing in my opinion. It also erase the clear border between these 3 categories. Not sure if we need to distinguish between the first two, but i do not like putting user defined landmarks into the same group as the others. There are no rules what can be in the third category, allowing for virtually anything to become a landmark. Since the names for these landmarks are made up, i also think that if by a chance there is a location with same name later, it should get priority to use the name first. I also do not like that the landmarks from second and first category share the icon, which in my mind suggest that they would also have the flag in the game, but they do not. I think it would be nice to revive the -icon at least for the landmarks from the 3th category. What is other people opinion and does anyone know the reasons behind the changes in the past? --Drono (talk) 09:00, 30 April 2021 (UTC)

I think the main reason for not adhering to the policy in the past was that people weren't aware of the policy. (I wasn't.) Probably needs to be stated prominently on the Create new location page, and/or Boilerplate:Landmarks. --Thurallor (talk) 02:42, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
It was mentioned on several pages in the past, for example this template also had pointOfInterest parameter. Most of the pages were changed, the one i cite might be the only one that was not, i like the approach described there, but as i said, i did not find any related discussion so not sure what was the motivation behind the change. --Drono (talk) 14:05, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
Once we had a parameter named pointOfInterest that used .
As I see many locations every day that go into CAT:REGION Other Locations by manually tagging pages for that I would like to add a new parameter named otherLocation which if empty tags the page for CAT:REGION Landmarks as-is, otherwise for CAT:REGION Other Locations and sets the icon file. Rather a parameter than manual CAT tagging. Objection or thoughts? — Zimoon 16:53, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
I think it would be nice to have param like that. To differentiate between the locations that actually have flag on the ingame map and other locations. --Drono (talk) 17:10, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
Added otherLoc as optional parameter. And updated the documentation. Didn't want to meddle with another icon because "other location" can mean so many different things.
Depending on how the "sub-category" discussion turns out we may simplify so any value for sub-region simply uses the area name instead of region name. Meant only for very dense areas. The parameter name is completely off for that but...   — Zimoon 21:35, 27 February 2022 (UTC)
