I removed the category:{name} reference. It just creates single page categories that have no real use. --SwordMage 00:05, 16 August 2008 (PDT)----

I agree however Deyvid didn't (see the forum discussion Recent Changes to Template:NPCbox). The purpose of the interior category is to list the NPCs that are located inside the interior. For example, Category:Scholar's Enclave NPCs are inside Category:Scholar's Enclave. If this template doesn't use Category:{name}, then we should go through the categories already created and delete them. --Glynnis 05:29, 22 August 2008 (PDT)

Upgrade Needed

This template needs an upgrade. Using "settlement" adds an ugly looking at the top of the article. For example The Green Dragon.

Yes, I know it is noted at the boilerplate to use "area" as a workaround. We could perhaps look into this now :)
Wanted: settlement = Bywater adds it to Category:Bywater Interiors -- Zimoon 16:12, 6 October 2011 (EDT)

I suggest the following fix for the "settlement issue":
|}<includeonly> {{ #if: {}
| {{ #if: {} <<< suggested line
      |
      | }} <<< suggested line
| }}</includeonly>
The addition is to test for "type" and "type" is blank the template adds to "Category:Settlement Interiors". This support is per discussions found elsewhere when this obstacle was first encountered. If nobody objects I will add this in a few days.

Thinking this over again and again, and having the Shire in fresh memory, I think we can do with just "<Region> Interiors" and not a bunch of sub-settlement categories. There are just a dozen or two interiors per region, the player houses excluded, so my pragmatism (or gut feeling if you will) tells we can settle with that for now and not a logical tree that indicates exactly where an interior is located within the region->area[->settlement]->interior.
However, all these parameters should be supported and if set they are displayed. As it works today.
I will do this change in a few minutes and then walk over all interiors that transclude from this template.

Friendly or Unfriendly?

Currently many public dungeons, those that are not landmarks on the map, are using this template. However, the CAT:REGION Interiors is meant for friendly interiors of any kind. While public dungeons are unfriendly, (almost) per definition. Either way, I believe we should differentiate friendly from unfriendly and not mix them in the same CAT.

While walking over regions up to and including Misty Mountains (which is in progress), for "unfriendly interiors" I have put nocat=some text in the template to avoid auto-categorization, and I have manually tagged the page for CAT:REGION Other Locations.

That said, we could still use this template and using the same icon or using some other icon that marks a difference, maybe just the colour? That would requite a new parameter, tentatively unfriendly which if empty would work as today, otherwise tag the page for another CAT (name to be decided), and if wanted use another icon. That instead of "nocat" + manual tagging. Objections or thoughts?

PS. While tempting to simply create another template type, it is also quite nice to have as few as possible. But that is another discussion. DS. — Zimoon 17:13, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
