A Reluctant Young Leader
"Agelwyn, the young wife of Thane Gladsúnu of Marton, has a difficult task set before her in her husband's absence as she awaits his return. Their town has fallen, and the people of Marton need a leader now more than ever."

Background

Agelwyn, the young wife of Thane Gladsúnu of Marton, is reluctant to lead her people in her husband's absence.

Objective 1

Agelwyn can be found in the refugees' hiding spot north of Marton.

You should help Agelwyn to put aside her anxiety and begin to lead her people.

Agelwyn: 'I miss my husband, <name>. Would that he were here! I would give anything for news of Gladsúnu.'
Agelwyn is distraught under the pressure of responsibility that has settled on her shoulders

Objective 2

  • Listen to Agelwyn

Agelwyn can be found in the refugees' hiding spot north of Marton.

You should help Agelwyn to put aside her anxiety and begin to lead her people.

Agelwyn says, "When we heard the Fords had fallen, we were all afraid."
Agelwyn says, "Then the Orcs approached in the night, torches in their hands."
Agelwyn says, "Elstan woke me and pushed me out the door, and I went with him while he raised the alarm."
Agelwyn says, "We all owe him our lives. I am grateful that my husband left him to protect us while our soldiers were gone."
Agelwyn says, "But now everyone looks to ME for answers. I cannot give any! I am no leader."
Agelwyn says, "My husband Gladsúnu is Thane, not I."
Agelwyn says, "I still remember the day he left...."

Objective 3

  • Speak with Agelwyn

Agelwyn can be found in the refugees' hiding spot north of Marton.

You should help Agelwyn to put aside her anxiety and begin to lead her people.

Agelwyn: 'I have never been so sad in my life, <name>. I remember our last conversation like it was yesterday.'

Objective 4

  • Listen to Agelwyn

Agelwyn can be found in the refugees' hiding spot north of Marton.

You should help Agelwyn to put aside her anxiety and begin to lead her people.

Gladsúnu says, "My dear Agelwyn, do not fear! I will be with Erkenbrand and the lords of the Mark."
Agelwyn says, "I would much rather you stayed here to protect Marton!"
Agelwyn says, "Surely Erkenbrand would understand. You have your duties as a Thane!"
Agelwyn says, "You should send your soldiers in your stead."
Gladsúnu says, "That is not the way of things, dear wife. I will ride to battle -- for Rohan, not for Marton."
Gladsúnu says, "This is larger than you and me, larger than Marton, larger even than the Westfold."
Gladsúnu says, "Dear wife!"
Gladsúnu says, "Do not cry! You must be strong, and lead our people in my stead, if need arises."
Agelwyn says, "I cannot! I am no warrior."
Gladsúnu says, "You needn't be a warrior. I leave Elstan with you -- he is my strongest and most loyal soldier."
Gladsúnu says, "You may be young and inexperienced, but you are clever as can be."
Gladsúnu says, "I know you will do well."
Agelwyn says, "Hmph!"
Gladsúnu says, "If...if the unthinkable happens, you must lead our people to Helm's Deep, Agelwyn."
Gladsúnu says, "It is the safest place in all of Rohan. Tell me that you understand!"
Agelwyn says, "I understand...."

Objective 5

  • Speak with Agelwyn

Agelwyn can be found in the refugees' hiding spot north of Marton.

You should help Agelwyn to put aside her anxiety and begin to lead her people.

Agelwyn: 'And here is my predicament: Should I really urge these people to make for Helm's Deep?
'How do I know when that dire time is here? What if I wait too long, or go when I should stay and fight?'
You assure Agelwyn that King Théoden himself has retreated to Helm's Deep, and urges everyone he sees to do the same.
If Agelwyn wishes to heed her husband's advice and make for Helm's Deep, now is the time.

Objective 6

  • Listen to Agelwyn

Agelwyn can be found in the refugees' hiding spot north of Marton.

You should help Agelwyn to put aside her anxiety and begin to lead her people.

Agelwyn says, "Oh dear. Someone wishes to speak with me."
Refugee says, "Forgive the interruption, Lady Agelwyn."
Agelwyn says, "It is no matter. What do you need?"
Refugee says, "Do you not think it is time we take back Marton?"
Refugee says, "It does not seem right to leave your Thane husband's town to the Orcs while he is lost at the Fords."
Agelwyn says, "I...."
Agelwyn says, "I do not know what we should do."
Refugee says, "I think you will find that it is clear to everyone that we drive the Orcs from Marton, my lady."
Refugee says, "I know you are new to acting as Thane, but I am certain you will arrive at the same conclusion in time."
Refugee says, "I only wish to advise you. The time to act is now."
Elstan says, "..."
Agelwyn: 'Now what do I do, <name>? I have not the experience to see what is right. In my heart, though, I wish to do as my beloved Gladsúnu bade me.'
