Description

The Book 12: The Ashen Wastes free content update (Feb. 13, 2008) introduced the Outfitting system which allows players to display two cosmetic outfits in addition to primary equipment. The two additional outfits are for appearance only, and no stats or effects from items apply when equipped in a cosmetic outfit slot. Book 12 also introduced cosmetic items into the game, such as backpacks, quivers, dresses, shirt and pants outfits, and more. Cosmetic items are for appearance only and do not have armour or stat bonuses.

Outfit 1 and Outfit 2 become available when a character reaches level 20. Characters below level 20 can still display cosmetic items by equipping the item in a regular Equipment slot.

Cosmetic items as well as regular equipment items can be equipped in either Equipment, Outfit 1, or Outfit 2 slots (although no item stats or bonuses will be applied by items equipped in outfit slots). A player must still meet the requirements of items such as level, class, armour proficiency (e.g. light armour, medium armour) in order to equip the item in a cosmetic outfit slot.

Items equipped in a cosmetic outfit slot will override the appearance of primary gear appearance when the player switches to that outfit. Players also have the option to show or hide the appearance of individual items in the head, shoulders, hands, back, and feet slots by clicking the icon of the eye next to the item slot.

While displaying items in Outfit 1 or Outfit 2, it is not necessary to keep that item in the player's inventory bags. When a player equips an item in either an Outfit 1 or Outfit 2 slot a "snapshot" of the appearance of that item is recorded in that Outfit slot and the item is no longer required; and that item can either be sold, or stored in the player's bank. The Outfit slots can only store one "snapshot" at a time: so, if a player equips a Cloth Hat in the head slot of Outfit 1, then later changes Outfit 1's head slot to Mariner's Eyepatch, the Cloth Hat appearance is over-written by Mariner's Eyepatch (and the Cloth Hat appearance is lost). If the player sold the Cloth Hat item, they must reacquire the Cloth Hat item in order to display the appearance of a Cloth Hat.

Players can use the Keymapping options to set a specific key for each outfit, allowing players to switch between all 3 outfits instantly "on the fly" by pressing the associated keys on the keyboard.

The cosmetic outfits (Outfit 1 and Outfit 2) are disabled in the Ettenmoors PvMP zone, revealing the Equipment items of Free Peoples characters (Freeps) to Monster Play characters (Creeps).

Cosmetic Items

Cosmetic items are special items that are intended soley for appearance and have no armour or stat bonuses associated with them. Cosmetic items can be equipped and displayed in either Outfit 1 or Outfit 2 as well as primary Equipment slots.

Cosmetic items are sold by Outfitter NPCs located in the Shire (Michel Delving and Stock), Bree, Rivendell, Trestlebridge, Othrikar, and Thorin's Hall. The various Outfitters sell largely the same cosmetic items, though each Outfitter has at least one or two items that are unique to that Outfitter.

    • You can map keys to select which outfit you want to present to your fellow inhabitants of Middle-earth. Look under Options/Key Mapping/Cosmetic Outfit Selection.
    • Added new options for turning off shoulders & gloves. All the slot visibility toggles are now available from a checkbox on the character journal next to each slot. The options to turn off your helm, cloak, and boots are no longer available from the options menu.
    • New cosmetic (i.e., stat-less items intended for your cosmetic inventory slots) hauberks, backpacks, quivers, and social clothing are now available!
  • Generic Equipables - items that can be equipped by all “regular” players, regardless of class and equipment proficiencies. These items are visible to other players!

Book 13 Patch Notes

  • Outfit visibility slots can now be specified per outfit. On inspecting other players, only their currently visible items will be seen.

Notes

  • It has been stated by the developers that having the Outfitting system implemented in the game opens up the possibility for future expansions and additional uses for the Outfitting system. No further information was given.
  • The Book 13: Doom of the Last-king free content update has changed visibility settings so that each outfit (Equipment, Outfit1, Outfit2) have separate settings for showing or hiding individual slots. Now a player can hide the helm slot on Outfit1 while still showing the helm slot on Outfit2. Weapons are still visible in all outfits.
